When I returned to the house with the gift, Alex was telling the elderly couple about our marriage.
The reason he hadn't informed them earlier was that he feared they would object. He didn't want to offend the Harvey and Parks families. Most importantly, I was the woman he wanted to marry.
The room fell into stunned silence. Most people didn't believe what Alex was saying.
After all, he was one of a kind. How could he possibly fall for a woman like me?
Besides, the Herrera family owed me. I had been with Austin for six years, yet in the end, they turned on me for an adopted daughter. If I made a scene, it would bring shame to the Herrera family.
But did I even have the courage to make a scene?
Ultimately, from the way the elderly couple accepted Alex's explanation, it was clear. I was nothing more than a shield for him.
This marriage eliminated the Harvey and Parks families' hopes for him. Neither family was offended, and outsiders would stop coveting him.
For someone like me, with no status or background, I was the perfect choice for his wife.
Austin suddenly spoke. "Uncle Alex, why do you have to marry her? If you want a woman with no background, aren't there plenty of choices?"
Alex glanced at him. "Can you guarantee that those women won't be bribed? What if someone finds dirt on them and causes trouble? Who will bear that responsibility?"
Austin hesitated, then looked at me with cold eyes. "Uncle Alex, aren't you afraid she will betray you? Betray the Herrera family?"
"She was with you for six years. Did she ever do anything to betray you?" Alex fixed his gaze on Austin, his eyes carrying an unfathomable depth.
Alex said, "I'm not the kind of man who would marry just anyone. Sometimes, the simpler the person, the harder they are to find."
With that, he reached for my hand, his dark eyes filled with an unfathomable tenderness.
The surroundings were completely silent. No one dared to speak.
The atmosphere was heavy, and it was obvious to everyone that the elderly couple was not pleased with me as their daughter-in-law. But they couldn't find any fault in Alex's reasoning.
More importantly, we were already legally married. No matter how dissatisfied they were, there was nothing they could do about it.
At that moment, Kayden finally arrived. When he learned that Alex and I had registered our marriage, his expression darkened.
He said, "Alex, how could you marry Austin's girlfriend? If word gets out, what will happen to the Herrera family's reputation?"
"Kayden, isn't that an overreaction? Laurel and I got together after she and Austin broke up. I didn't take her from him. Of course, I admit I was inconsiderate as an elder and didn't give him a chance to regret it."
Alex glanced at Austin before continuing, "As compensation, I have already arranged a marriage for him. Now it's up to him to decide."
Kayden said, "Alex, you're usually so level-headed. How could you be so reckless this time?"
Hearing Kayden's words, I couldn't help but find it amusing.
Alex's own parents hadn't said a word, yet the man who usually stayed out of family affairs suddenly decided to interfere.
I wondered what the elderly couple thought of that. Would they feel that their third son had changed, or would they suspect he had succumbed to the Harvey family's influence?
"Kayden, who do you think I should marry?" Alex asked, looking at him.
Kayden didn't hesitate for a second. "Of course it's Samantha. You two have been engaged since childhood. Now that she's back, you should get married. The Harvey family has already made arrangements. They plan to announce your engagement next week."
"So, you're quite satisfied with the Harvey family's daughter?" Alex's gaze lingered on Kayden, but the usual warmth in his eyes was gone, replaced by a sharp, chilling intensity.
"Samantha is a match for you in both status and appearance," Kayden said.
Amanda, who was sitting to the side, reached out and tugged on Kayden's sleeve, but the man completely ignored her.
Alex asked, "What about the Parks family's daughter? Kayden, what do you think?"
Kayden looked puzzled. "The Parks family's daughter?"
"Wadiff City's Parks family, Kailyn Shepherd," Alex said, enunciating each word clearly.
When Kayden heard the name of the Parks family from Wadiff City, a flicker of surprise crossed his face, but he quickly returned to his usual expression.
He said, "The Parks family of Wadiff City and our family are well-matched in terms of status, but they are not the same as the Harvey family. Your engagement to Samantha was arranged by the elders. How could it be changed?"
Alex nodded, remained silent for a moment, then looked at Austin. "Austin, it looks like your father has already chosen for you. The only question is whether the Harvey family will agree to this marriage."
He paused before continuing, "I just hope you think it through. After all, Samantha is the eldest daughter of the Harvey family."
Then, Linda chimed in. "Austin, your uncle is right. Samantha is the Harvey family's heiress. You must not neglect her. And don't upset her over Rosemary either. No woman isn't jealous. Rosemary is your sister, but you need to keep your distance."
"What do you mean?" Kayden asked Alex with a confused expression.
Before Alex could respond, Amanda eagerly jumped in. "Alex is already married, so the engagement between the Harvey family and the Herrera family has been passed on to Austin."
Kayden retorted, "Ridiculous! How can an engagement be passed on like that? The Harvey family chose Alex!"
"So what? Alex is already married now. Are you saying our son isn't worthy of a Harvey family heiress?" Amanda glared at Kayden.
I found it quite amusing. If Samantha discovered that she had bribed Kayden to convince Alex to marry her, only to have her engagement passed to his younger cousin, I could only imagine how furious she would be.
At that moment, Linda joined in. "Kayden, Alex was originally supposed to marry Gracie Harvey, not Samantha. So what do you mean by 'passing it on'? Alex never agreed to marry Samantha in the first place.
"If the Harvey family insists on the engagement, then why can't Austin marry Samantha? If she refuses, then the engagement is off. Simple as that."
I looked up at Linda. She was clearly a formidable woman.
From just a few sentences, it was obvious that there was serious tension between her and Amanda.
She also knew full well that Samantha would never accept Austin.
Raphael furrowed his brows and tapped his cane twice on the floor.
The room instantly fell silent. It was obvious that Raphael didn't like me, but I couldn't blame him.
After all, I had been with Austin for six years, almost becoming his fiancée, only to turn around and marry Alex instead. It was a bit much.
More importantly, if this news got out, Alex would be utterly humiliated, and the Herrera family's reputation would be dragged down with it.
Raphael said, "Alex, I do not approve of this marriage. Before word spreads, go and get the divorce papers. As for the engagement with the Harvey family, I will not force you, but I will never agree to Laurel Parks marrying into our family."
