Raphael shot me a cold, disdainful look. His disgust was plain to see.
But then, his gaze landed on the bracelet I was wearing, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
At that moment, Lena spoke slowly. "What are you all standing around for? Get her out of my sight."
The servants stepped forward, ready to act, but Alex once again pulled me behind him protectively.
Alex said, "Dad, Mom. Since you refuse to accept my wife, I will leave with her. From now on, I won't return to the Herrera family. You can consider me as good as gone."
Alex held my hand tightly, a gentle smile on his lips. "Don't be afraid. Let's go home."
Afraid? What was there to be afraid of? I had already prepared myself for the worst possible outcome. I just hadn't expected Alex to choose to leave the Herrera family for me.
"Alex, don't be impulsive!" Kayden quickly stepped in to stop him.
The moment the elders in the room heard Alex say he was leaving, their expressions changed.
I couldn't help but find it curious. If Alex truly left the Herrera family, the Herrera Group would fall into their hands. Shouldn't that be a cause for celebration?
"Alex, when have you ever acted on impulse?" Alex smiled at him. "I've done more than enough for the Herrera family over the years. I hope that without me, the family can continue to thrive."
The moment the words "continue to thrive" left his mouth, the expressions of everyone in the room shifted dramatically.
I immediately sensed something was off. Did Herrera Group owe its success entirely to Alex? No way. Was he really that capable?
Linda walked over to the side table by the window, reaching out to pat the shoulder of a middle-aged man who was calmly sipping coffee. He was dressed in a black suit with a high-collared, buttoned-up shirt underneath, paired with black trousers and matte leather shoes.
He held a delicate blue-and-white porcelain cup. His demeanor was relaxed and composed, which was completely out of place compared to the tension in the room.
"Alex, don't get upset." The man strode over to Alex's side, giving his shoulder a reassuring pat. "Let's talk this through. Mom and Dad are just angry right now."
This was Aloysius Herrera, the fifth son of the Herrera family.
The Herrera family had a total of nine children. Two had died young, leaving five sons and two daughters.
The eldest son, Bruce, was frail and had lived abroad for a long time. The second and fourth children were the ones who had passed away. As for how those two had died, the details remained unclear.
It was also uncertain how many of the seven remaining siblings were Lena's biological children.
After all, everyone called her "Mom," but I had always found it hard to believe that she had given birth to so many.
Then again, in wealthy families, having many children was seen as a blessing. There was even a saying, "The more children, the more fortune."
So it wasn't surprising. In their generation, even ordinary families typically had at least two children. It was rare to see an only child.
After learning that Alex was not Lena's biological son, I couldn't help but suspect that some of the Herrera family's many children might have been born outside of marriage.
Alex looked at Aloysius, and his previously grim expression seemed to ease. So, he had a good relationship with his fifth brother. At least, it appeared that way on the surface.
"Dad, Mom, let's talk this through. Alex is already in his mid-thirties. You can't keep treating him like a child." Aloysius turned to the elders sitting on the couch, still fuming with anger.
"Alex, did you even think about yourself when you married Laurel? Did you think about the Herrera family?" Lena demanded coldly.
Lena looked to be in her seventies, her temples streaked with gray.
Perhaps because she lived a life of luxury, with everything handed to her on a silver platter, her complexion looked remarkably good.
Raphael, on the other hand, was wheeled out of the elevator. His mobility was impaired, though his voice was full of authority.
Alex slowly turned to face Lena. He smiled coldly and smugly. "Dad, Mom, I've given everything to the Herrera family. I've even been willing to risk my life for it. Can't I be selfish just this once?"
I froze, momentarily stunned. Risk his life for the Herrera family? Did this have something to do with his injuries?
If that were the case, no wonder the people in this room weren't willing to let Alex walk away so easily.
After all, these elders were old now. None of them could take a beating. One wrong move and they'd be bedridden, if not worse.
I couldn't help but wonder. What kind of job required someone to put their life on the line? Was it something I had never even heard of before?
As far as I knew, the Herrera Group was involved in finance, real estate, energy, manufacturing, and healthcare. None of those industries seemed life-threatening.
Yet, when Alex spoke, it sent a chill down my spine.
"Of all the women in the world, why did you have to choose Austin's ex-girlfriend?" Lena frowned. "Are you trying to kill me out of spite?"
Alex let out a soft sigh. "Mom, if you think my choice was meant to anger you, then what about everything you've done to me? Wasn't that meant to take my life?"
The moment those words fell, the entire room turned ice-cold. Everyone went rigid, barely daring to breathe.
Lena clenched her hands into fists and shot up from the couch.
But before she could speak, Alex smiled. "Since you dislike my wife so much, I'll take her and leave. We won't be in your way anymore. Don't worry, I won't take a single cent from the Herrera family.
"If you're still concerned, why don't you write a formal disownment document? I don't mind. I never agreed to marriage with the Harvey family anyway. Whoever wants to marry into that family can go ahead."
"Enough!" Raphael roared.
No one had expected Alex to say something so defiant for my sake. After all, the Herrera family had always been bound by strict rules.
Lena's face darkened, and she slowly sank back into her seat.
Raphael was silent for a long moment before he let out a heavy sigh. "Forget it. This matter is settled."
"Does anyone else have objections to my marriage with Laurel?" Alex's gaze swept across the room.
No one spoke. Even if some of them were still seething inside, they didn't dare voice their complaints. If not even Raphael and Lena could stop him, no one else could.
Kayden looked like he wanted to say something, but Amanda clung tightly to his arm, stopping him.
Her face remained expressionless, but I could tell she was practically overjoyed inside.
Whether it was the Parks family or the Harvey family, either marriage alliance would give her plenty of leverage to flaunt her status in high society for a long time.
