Alex held onto my hand tightly, as if afraid that if he let go, I would get scared and run away.
The atmosphere in the living room was so stifling that it felt hard to breathe. The scent of food wafted through the air, easing my nerves a little.
Everyone in the room watched as the elderly couple talked, not daring to interrupt. Everyone knew that Lena was furious, and Raphael was patiently trying to appease her.
During this time, I chatted with Linda.
"Laurel, don't be afraid. Lena has a temper, but she's a good person," Linda suddenly explained to me.
I smiled and nodded in appreciation. What was there to be afraid of? She was just an old woman.
Besides, I could understand Lena's frustration. Samantha was the bride she had chosen for Alex, and now, without any prior notice, the bride had been switched.
And not just switched, but replaced by someone who was worlds apart from Samantha. Of course, she wouldn't be pleased.
Alex was clearly doing this to provoke her. Maybe he was trying to vent his mother's grievances.
But shouldn't he be directing his anger at Raphael instead? After all, it was Raphael who had wronged his mother.
An old man still chasing after young women, and worse, he had separated a mother from her child, placing Alex under Lena's care.
How could Lena possibly treat a child born out of wedlock with kindness? That so-called motherly love was nothing but an act.
But Alex was done playing his role. Or perhaps he simply didn't want to be a puppet anymore. It seemed, however, that his plan had failed.
Raphael had chosen to compromise. Which meant that Alex still had value to him, so he wasn't willing to let him go.
The atmosphere in the living room was too suffocating, and I wanted some fresh air.
"I need to use the restroom." I patted Alex's hand lightly.
He hesitated for a moment before finally letting go and nodding.
Alex replied, "It's to the right of the dining room."
I nodded and got up, heading in that direction.
I had barely walked past the dining room when I suddenly heard heavy breathing.
Stopping in my tracks, I peeked through the crack of the door and saw a woman pinned against the wall as a man kissed her passionately.
And that man was none other than Austin.
The sight made me instinctively take two steps back. I suddenly realized I might have gone the wrong way. But I had to admit, Austin was certainly bold.
I couldn't see who was under in his arms. It was too dark.
The only reason I recognized Austin was because his silhouette had long been imprinted in my mind. One glance was all it took.
When I came out of the restroom, I saw that Austin had already returned to the living room.
Although I hadn't seen the woman's face, I did catch a glimpse of the ring on her hand as she wrapped her arms around Austin's neck.
It was the same engagement ring Austin had bought for me. The only other person who could possibly have the same ring was Rosemary.
Austin called Rosemary his "little sister," yet they had the audacity to do something this shameless in the Herrera Manor.
I had to admit, their nerve was truly impressive.
Judging by how desperate they looked, this was far from their first time.
Rosemary must have been getting anxious. After all, Austin was about to marry someone else.
Was she afraid he would abandon her? Or was she trying to use her body to make him stay?
How naive. No matter who Austin ended up marrying, Rosemary wouldn't have a good life anymore.
Samantha, that masterful mainoulative woman, was not someone to be trifled with.
But honestly, I was looking forward to it. Watching two bitches tear each other apart was bound to be entertaining.
However, I was even more eager to see Kailyn and Austin become husband and wife.
With her inability to tolerate any dishonesty, she would probably find an excuse to kick Rosemary out of the Herrera family the moment she married in.
Suddenly, I was looking forward to everything that would happen next.
What delighted me even more was that no matter who ended up marrying Austin, I would become their aunt-in-law.
Since Alex had acknowledged me, I was naturally his wife.
The five million dollars was secure. Just the thought of meeting Kailyn and collecting my gambling winnings added to my joy.
After waiting for about twenty minutes, Raphael and Lena finally headed to the dining room, supported by Amanda.
Amanda had always been skilled at pleasing the elderly couple.
I used to think it was because her husband was unambitious, holding nothing more than a nominal position at Herrera Group, collecting a fixed salary and company dividends each month.
So, she must have been trying every means to gain their affection, hoping to secure a decent position for her son in Herrera Group.
I never expected that even after Austin graduated, Alex still sent him to a branch office. Austin had often complained to me about his uncle for this.
Although Austin never cursed Alex outright in front of me, I was sure he had done plenty of that behind his back.
In reality, everything Amanda did was orchestrated by Kayden. Otherwise, with her temper and unwillingness to endure grievances, she would never have willingly served her in-laws.
At the dining table, no one showed any trace of awkwardness from the earlier unpleasantness. They maintained the appearance of a warm and harmonious family.
At last, I understood why everyone in the Herrera family was such a skilled actor. They must have been specially trained for it.
But what truly amused me was that after witnessing what had happened between Austin and Rosemary, I realized the real Oscar winners were the two of them.
They still interacted like an affectionate older brother and younger sister, their gazes devoid of any inappropriate desire.
I used to think I was just overanalyzing things, but now it was clear. They were simply masters of deception.
Not only had they fooled me, but they had also deceived everyone in the Herrera family.
I wondered if Amanda found out that her biological son and the girl she had raised as her own had been lying to her, would she go mad?
I was also curious. Did Rosemary not want to be Austin's wife? Was she truly content being the other woman?
As I pondered these thoughts, my fork accidentally slipped from my hand and fell to the floor.
Bending down to pick it up, I unintentionally caught sight of Austin and Rosemary's hands tightly clasped together under the table, fingers intertwined, as if they couldn't bear to part.
How touching.
"What's wrong?" Alex noticed my strange behavior and asked.
I said, "My fork fell."
He responded, "I'll get it for you."
"No need." I raised my voice suddenly, drawing the attention of several people.
Across from me, Rosemary and Austin visibly tensed, their eyes locking onto me.
Perhaps startled, they quickly withdrew their hands, placing them on the table instead.
I glanced at Rosemary and smirked. "I found it."
Placing the fork back on the table, the laughter and chatter resumed around us, except for Rosemary. Her face darkened as she looked at me.
