If she didn't already know, Samantha wouldn't have rushed over early in the morning, fuming with anger.
I couldn't help but sigh inwardly. So even the always gifted, stunning, and well-bred Samantha turned out to be someone who loses herself in love.
"Miss Harvey, Mr. Herrera is not at home." Hector quickly stepped forward the moment he saw Samantha appear.
It was obvious to anyone that he was worried she might do something to me.
Samantha smiled sweetly, but her sharp gaze was locked onto me like a knife, as if she wished she could kill me right then and there.
But it wasn't my fault. Killing me wouldn't change anything.
The love and resentment between her and Alex had nothing to do with me. So why was I the one she hated?
I wanted to tell her to let go of her obsession. I was the most innocent one here.
But I knew that if I said that out loud, she would only hate me more, want to destroy me even faster.
And honestly, she had a point. Without me, perhaps Alex wouldn't have been able to walk away so cleanly. Maybe, he would have caved under pressure and married Samantha.
Samantha said, "I'm here to see Miss Parks. I just have a few things I'd like to say to her. Mr. Steele, are you afraid I'll eat her alive?"
Hector was at a loss for how to respond. Even Alex wouldn't dare to offend Samantha easily, let alone a mere butler.
"Miss Harvey, please come in," I said with a gentle smile, showing no trace of fear or hesitation.
I wasn't worried that she would actually do anything to me.
After all, we were in Newton City, in Alex's home, no less.
A lady from the Harvey family wouldn't risk ruining the elegant, kindhearted image she had cultivated for so many years just for a woman like me.
Besides, even without Alex, she still had plenty of other men to choose from.
But rumors would spread like wildfire if she lost her composure because I married Alex.
And she wouldn't just ruin herself. She'd bring shame upon the entire Harvey family.
"Hector, make Miss Harvey some coffee," I said, gesturing for Samantha to sit. "I wonder what you would like to say to me?"
She said, "Laurel, do you really think that just because you got a marriage certificate with Alex, you can secure your position as Mrs. Herrera?"
So Samantha already knew about our marriage. That could only mean someone from the Herrera family had told her.
And I didn't even need to think to guess who it was. It must be Kayden.
This confirmed that Kayden never truly wanted Austin to marry Samantha.
Or perhaps he knew that bringing her into the family would only invite unnecessary trouble.
Besides, Samantha herself might not even agree to marry Austin. Instead of forcing the issue, Kayden had simply done her a "favor" by informing her about me and Alex. He was a cunning strategist.
I should have realized earlier just how formidable Kayden really was.
"Miss Harvey, why get so worked up?" I slowly lifted my gaze to Samantha and offered a polite smile.
"Laurel, I underestimated you." Samantha sneered. "Do you even know your place? Do you think you're worthy of the title 'Mrs. Herrera'? Marrying Alex will only make Mrs. Lena Herrera despise him even more."
There was more to her words than what she was saying outright.
So Samantha must also know that Alex isn't Lena's biological son.
Kayden was really bold, openly sharing the Herrera family's secrets like that.
I wondered if he was not afraid of upsetting Alex. Or maybe Samantha had already known all along.
After all, she and Alex practically grew up together.
I let out a quiet sigh and cast a calm glance at Samantha before lowering my voice. "Miss Harvey, you are a lady of the Harvey family, and this is Alex's home. There are plenty of eyes watching, and people love to talk.
"I understand that you couldn't suppress your anger and wanted to come for answers, which is understandable."
I added, "But if you came here just to scold and humiliate me, the rumors that spread will damage your reputation, not mine."
After I finished, Hector walked in with freshly brewed coffee.
"Hector, you may leave. Miss Harvey and I need a moment to talk," I said with a smile while pouring Samantha a cup and placing it in front of her.
Even though she disliked the way I carried myself as the lady of the house, I knew she had listened to what I said just now.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have sat down so calmly.
Hector glanced at me, saw my composed expression, and gave a slight nod before quietly leaving. Now, it was just Samantha and me in the living room.
Samantha sneered. "Laurel, I always thought you were an idiot. I never expected you to be so cunning. But unfortunately, your little scheme won't work. So what if you got a marriage certificate with Alex?
"The Herrera family will never acknowledge you. You're nothing but a shield for him, and he will divorce you sooner or later."
"Whether I'm acknowledged or not isn't up to you or me," I said with a small smile, taking a slow sip of coffee. "It's up to Alex. And whether we divorce or not is also his decision."
Samantha responded, "Laurel, the Herrera family will never accept you. Alex is just using you as a pawn. He will divorce you."
I lifted my gaze and smiled at Samantha. "Miss Harvey, if you're so sure that Alex is only using me and will eventually leave me, why are you so upset? Why not just wait a little longer? Look at me. I'm in no hurry at all."
Samantha warned, "Laurel, I'm giving you an opportunity here."
"An opportunity?" I raised an eyebrow, amused. I watched Samantha quickly suppress her anger.
The speed at which she could change faces was truly impressive. A true master of the art. Compared to her, Rosemary was still a bit lacking.
"If you divorce Alex, I will make sure you are compensated," Samantha said with a smile. "Right now, you still could walk away with something. But if you refuse, once Alex loses everything, what will you have left?"
"That sounds very reasonable," I said, staring straight into her eyes as I nodded firmly. Then, I furrowed my brows, letting a trace of helplessness show on my face, my voice tinged with melancholy.
"But even if I wanted to divorce him, Alex wouldn't agree. He made it clear yesterday at Herrera Manor."
I continued, "If anyone had a problem with our marriage, he would leave the Herrera family and cut ties completely.
"If Alex really ends up with nothing, would you still be willing to marry him?"
Samantha gripped her teacup tightly, her eyes sharp as she stared at me, clearly doubting my words.
She said, "Impossible. Alex would never say such a thing."
"Why not?" I frowned. "It seems you don't know Alex enough. The truth is, he isn't happy in the Herrera family at all. Marrying me wasn't just about escaping an engagement. It was about breaking free from them completely."
