It turned out the visitor was Leah, the eighth daughter of the Herrera family. She didn't even bother showing up at the family dinner yesterday.
Leah didn't look the least bit happy. If anything, she had a dangerously high attack level. No wonder Hector wanted me to go upstairs and avoid her.
But what was the point of hiding? She wasn't someone that could be easily avoided.
I had heard about Leah before. Of course, most of what I knew didn't come from Austin but from entertainment headlines.
Leah had been married three times. And none of those marriages lasted longer than a year. The shortest one lasted three months. It was a sudden wedding, followed by a sudden divorce.
Her first marriage was to the son of a wealthy businessman from Newton City. It was likely an arranged marriage.
But despite that, the media had hyped it up as a childhood romance, claiming they had been deeply in love before finally tying the knot.
Unfortunately, the high-profile marriage lasted less than nine months before rumors of trouble surfaced.
Her husband was caught cheating. Leah caught him red-handed and divorced him immediately.
Less than a month later, his family was rumored to have gone bankrupt. Their businesses were swiftly taken over by the Herrera family.
People speculated that the entire marriage had been a scheme by the Herrera family. That Leah had seduced the man, drained him of his wealth, and walked away with a significant portion of his fortune.
Only the people involved knew how much of it was true.
As for her second marriage, she married a man ten years younger than her. That one didn't last either.
The Herrera family strongly opposed the marriage, convinced that the man was only after Leah's money. But Leah insisted it was true love.
She was so determined to be with him that she cut ties with her family. In response, the Herrera family cut off her financial support.
And yet, within three months, the marriage was over. It was another sudden marriage followed by another sudden divorce.
The reason was obvious. The moment the man lost access to Leah's money, he moved on to a richer heiress.
Even while they were married, the scandals surrounding him never stopped.
Then came her third marriage, the one that dominated the internet for quite some time.
Twice divorced, Leah suddenly fell for the son of a businessman from Mecland. There were even rumors that she was pregnant, which was why they rushed into marriage.
That marriage lasted six months. And of course, the pregnancy rumors turned out to be false.
As for Leah's relationship with the Herrera family, it had remained neither close nor entirely severed.
Leah had done plenty to disgrace the family name, yet she hadn't been cast out.
It seemed that she must be Lena's biological daughter. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been forgiven so easily.
"Are you mute? You see me and don't even greet me?" Leah glanced at me with open disdain.
I raised a brow and smiled. "Greet you? Is there a gift involved?"
"A gift?" Leah scoffed, curling her lips into a cold smile. "Do you even deserve one?"
"Of course not." I sighed lightly. "Which is exactly why there's no need to greet you."
A flicker of surprise crossed her eyes, quickly replaced by malice and anger.
She raised her hand to slap me. I caught her wrist before she could make contact. I didn't even use much force, but I knew it still hurt.
Leah snapped, "You!"
"Are your heels too high? Maybe you should take them off before you twist your ankle. That would hurt." I cut her off smoothly.
I would never let Leah push me around. If I let it happen once, and there would be a second time.
"Miss Herrera, perhaps you should sit inside." Hector quickly stepped in, clearly afraid she'd try to hit me again.
Leah shot him a glare and yanked her hand free from mine.
She only managed to break away because I loosened my grip. Otherwise, there was no way she'd have escaped so easily.
"A heartless bastard does marry his own kind." She sneered.
"Thanks for the compliment." I smiled. "After all, only the heartless get to live without being shackled by so-called morals."
"You've got a lot of nerve." There was a hint of anger in Leah's voice.
She added, "Divorce Alex within three days, or don't blame me for what happens next."
"You don't seem particularly polite either." I dropped my smile and looked at her, tilting my head. "Is your tongue malfunctioning, or is your emotional intelligence just that low?
"If it's the first, go get it replaced. If it's the second, you should consider getting a new brain. If not for all those designer labels, I'd have mistaken you for some loudmouthed old hag."
With that, I instinctively pulled Hector a few steps back.
Sure enough, Leah swung at me again.
But she lost her balance. She nearly fell, and it was only thanks to her assistant that she didn't hit the ground.
"Are you blind? Hit her! Beat her to death!" Leah shoved her assistant aside, ordering her to attack me.
The assistant hesitated for a moment. "Miss, this is Mr. Alex Herrera's house."
Suddenly, a sharp slap landed on the assistant's face. Her face instantly turned red.
Leah had turned her fury on her own assistant.
Hector frowned slightly and stepped in front of me. "Miss Herrera, how you discipline your people is your business. But if you plan to lay hands on Miss Parks here, that would be inappropriate."
Leah froze for a moment, seemingly caught off guard. A butler who had always treated her with deference was now standing up to her.
"Hector, do you even know your place? How dare you speak to me like that?" She glared at him, her eyes filled with rage and cruelty.
Hector sighed. "Of course, I know my place. I am the head butler here, and I have both the authority and the duty to protect Mrs. Herrera on behalf of Mr. Herrera."
"Mr. Herrera? Mrs. Herrera?" Leah let out a cold laugh. "He's nothing but a bastard born to a whore! If the Herrera family hadn't raised him, he'd be long dead. He thinks he's above his parents now. And who are you? You dare lecture me?"
She jabbed a finger at Hector's face, showing not even a shred of restraint.
I took a deep breath, but it wasn't enough to suppress the surge of fury in my heart.
I grabbed Hector and pulled him behind me. Then, I slapped Leah hard in her face.
She lost her balance and didn't expect me to hit her. She fell to the ground.
Everyone widened their eyes in shock and looked at me. Even Leah, who had fallen to the ground, scolded angrily, "You bitch! How dare you hit me?"
"Who are you calling a bitch?" I rolled my eyes and turned to Hector. "Hector, buy two dogs tomorrow. We can't have strays wandering into the courtyard barking all the time. Sometimes, you have to beat them."
Leah pushed herself up. Her face was twisted in rage. "You'll regret this!"
