Hearing those words, my heart clenched with panic. I quickly said, "Just tell him I'm busy and can't take his call."
I knew I could dodge the issue for now, but I wouldn't be able to avoid it forever. Still, I wanted to delay it as long as possible.
Hector said, "Mrs. Herrera, Mr. Herrera, he..."
"Lawrence's injury is more urgent. Just tell him I'll find him later." I cut off Hector before he could finish. The later, the better.
Honestly, I was already starting to regret getting into a fight with Leah.
No matter what, she was still Alex's older sister. Even if the two of them didn't get along, I could tell from the way the household staff treated her that Alex had always chosen to ignore her rather than confront her.
Even someone as feared as Alex wouldn't easily offend her, yet I had managed to anger her the first time we met. I slapped her more than ten times.
Thinking about how furious she had looked was undeniably satisfying. But what was done was done. No point regretting it now.
Besides, Leah deserved it. She had a filthy mouth.
The assistant returned with the medicine, and after applying the ointment, the bleeding stopped before long.
Still, Lawrence needed to go to the hospital.
"Mrs. Herrera, I'm fine." Lawrence touched his bandaged head, a hint of surprise flashing across his face.
"Of course not. You were bleeding from the head. You need to get checked at the hospital. What if there's some long-term damage?" I glanced at the assistant standing nearby. "Besides, I need to give her a ride home anyway."
The assistant looked at me gratefully, but then something crossed her mind, and she hesitated. Lowering her head, she mumbled, "I... I don't even know where to go."
Lawrence frowned slightly. "She offended Leah. It'll be hard for her to find a place in Newton City."
"Leah is really that powerful?" My stomach twisted. If she were that influential, did that mean I wouldn't even be able to step outside after slapping her?
Lawrence replied, "In Newton City, no one dares to mess with her. Crossing her is as good as digging your own grave."
I asked, "Then why did those two bodyguards leave just now? Weren't they afraid of her?"
Lawrence paused, then gave me a meaningful look. "You don't know about Mr. Herrera's Elysium Club? It runs top-tier security, document protection, and a professional fighting gym.
"Bodyguards like them wouldn't dare cause trouble on Mr. Herrera's turf. He wouldn't even have to do anything. Someone else would handle them."
I was stunned. Alex was the CEO of the Herrera Group, so why was he involved in such a dangerous business?
Lawrence seemed to pick up on my confusion and added, "Five years ago, the Herrera Group faced a financial crisis. If Mr. Herrera hadn't established Elysium Club, the company would've been torn apart by greedy investors."
"Lawrence." Hector frowned, casting him a warning glance.
Realizing he had said too much, Lawrence immediately shut his mouth.
Hector glanced at the young assistant and sighed helplessly. "Girl, what's your name?"
The assistant said, "Sophina Trenton."
Hector asked, "Do you still want to stay in Newton City?"
"Yes." Sophina nodded and glanced at Hector.
She hesitated before stepping closer and grabbing my arm. "Mrs. Herrera, please, let me stay. I can do anything. I'm not afraid of hard work. I just... I just want a place to call home."
Home. That word struck a chord in me.
Back when I followed Austin to Newton City, I also wanted a place that truly belonged to me.
A metropolis like this had towering skyscrapers, dazzling city lights, and countless people striving for a better future.
Even late at night, the streets of Newton City were still lively. The food stalls would stay open until dawn.
This city was big enough to welcome people from all over, never judging anyone by their accent.
Perhaps it was because it was a new place, free from painful memories, that I had longed to come here before I even arrived. And after witnessing its grandeur, I had wanted to stay even more.
Because here, I had the person I loved, and the one who loved me the most. But I had never expected that time could change everything so easily.
"Mrs. Herrera, let Sophina stay. You need someone to look after you anyway," Hector suggested.
He turned to her. "How long have you been with Miss Leah Herrera?"
Sophina replied, "Two years."
Hector nodded approvingly. "Not bad. You're the first assistant to last that long by her side."
Hearing that, I grew curious about the girl in front of me. Two years wasn't exactly long, but it wasn't short either.
Yet somehow, Sophina hadn't picked up any of Leah's bad habits. Instead, she had a clear sense of right and wrong.
Having principles might seem like a simple thing, but few could uphold them for a lifetime. The world was full of temptations, after all.
I said, "Since Hector is vouching for you, you can stay."
"Really?" Sophina's face lit up with joy.
I nodded. "I'll take you back first. Once you've packed, come straight over."
Seeing that I was determined to take him to the hospital, Lawrence had no choice but to agree.
Judging by his expression, I suspected he was more annoyed by my terrible bandaging skills than anything else. He looked like a half-mummified disaster.
Not that I could blame him. I rarely had to do this sort of thing. It was usually someone else tending to my wounds.
As I stepped out with Lawrence and Sophina, a black business van pulled up, and a dozen men in black suits stepped out.
Instinctively, I guarded in front of Sophina warily.
"Mrs. Herrera, they're from the club," Lawrence said with a chuckle.
"Mrs. Herrera!" The men greeted me in unison. I nearly jumped at the sound.
I turned to look at Lawrence, feeling a bit awkward. Hearing "Mrs. Herrera" over and over was something I still wasn't used to.
I said, "You don't have to call me Mrs. Herrera."
He replied, "Mr. Herrera has acknowledged you. That makes you Mrs. Herrera. Mr. Herrera will protect you. He won't let the Herrera family mistreat you anymore."
I forced a smile. I could only hope Alex saw it the same way.
With a driver available, I didn't need to take Lawrence and Sophina back to the city myself. But after noticing the scratch on my wrist, Lawrence insisted I come to the hospital as well. It was just a minor scrape from Leah's nails.
Still, I went along.
I needed some fresh air, and I wanted to get away. If anyone else came looking for trouble today, I wasn't in the mood to deal with it.
I knew I could dodge the issue for now, but I wouldn't be able to avoid it forever. Still, I wanted to delay it as long as possible.
