I took a deep breath, furrowed my brows slightly, and turned to Lena. "So, now you admit I am Alex's wife?"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I turned to Leah, staring at her intently as I spoke in a low voice. "Then why did Miss Herrera push me to divorce Alex? I believe she was acting on your orders."
At that moment, Leah's glare was as fierce as ever, but deep down, she knew she had already backed herself into a corner.
If it had not been for Lena's instructions, Leah would not have stirred up trouble at Alex's villa, making my life difficult for no reason.
The truth was simple. They wanted me to divorce Alex so that Samantha could marry him without a hitch.
Maybe in Leah's eyes, I had no real status or identity. Even if I was bullied, it was just something I had to bear.
How ironic. I had no one behind me to back me up. No one to protect me, so they could do whatever they wanted to me, without fear of consequences.
Leah relied on her position as Lena's favorite to do whatever she wanted. She had probably been harboring resentment toward Alex for some time and saw me as a convenient outlet to vent her anger.
But what Leah never expected was for me to fight back, denying her the chance to bully me. Having been spoiled all her life, Leah was completely thrown off balance by my resistance.
Lena's sharp gaze fell on me. "Laurel, you and Alex already have your marriage license. I thought this matter was settled, yet you have no sense of propriety, no manners, and you even dared to hit Leah."
I let out a soft laugh. "I've already told you, Mrs. Herrera, that was self-defense. If you really want to press charges, how about I call the police for you?"
As I spoke, I took my phone out of my bag.
When Leah saw that I was actually about to make the call, a flash of panic appeared on her face. Everyone had their weaknesses, after all. The more someone had, the more they stood to lose.
If I truly sent everything out, it would not just ruin Leah; it would also tarnish the entire Herrera family's reputation.
"Darling, if I call the police, will you get into trouble?" I hesitated, looking at Alex.
Alex remained silent.
I nodded, understanding, and a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
"Alex, is this really how your wife behaves?" Lena snapped, her voice filled with anger.
"Mom, Leah's the one who got slapped. If you want to demand an explanation, calling the police is the best way to go about it," Alex sighed helplessly. "Leah is my sister. Laurel is my wife.
"If I have to choose, I'll always stand by my wife, or else she'll leave me. But blood is thicker than water, and Leah will always be my sister. What do you think?"
"This whole situation is a mess, but I'll let it slide. However, Laurel, as a member of the Herrera family, you must follow the family rules. If you kneel and apologize, we can forget about this incident," Lena said coldly, narrowing her eyes as she looked at me.
I was no fool. If everyone was at fault, it was completely unfair for me to be the one to kneel.
At that moment, Leah smiled smugly at me. "Alex, she doesn't even want to be a good daughter-in-law. She has no respect for Mom at all."
"You're right. I haven't acknowledged myself as the Herrera family's daughter-in-law." I shrugged casually. "We haven't even had our wedding yet, have we?"
Leah was momentarily stunned, caught off guard by my response.
I didn't care about their words. I stole a glance at Alex, who seemed to be holding back a smile. It seemed I had guessed correctly about a third of the situation.
It was hard for two dominant figures to get along in the same territory. Alex had probably been fed up with Leah for a long time, but due to his status, he had been silently putting up with her bratty behavior.
"Typical of someone from a small family. No manners at all," Lena said.
"Oh? Is that so? But people from wealthy and influential families don't seem to have outstanding manners either." I coughed lightly. "Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I have a medical condition.
"The doctor diagnosed me with both depression and mania. When I'm in a bad mood, I can get sick."
As soon as the words left my mouth, I shot Leah a meaningful glance.
Although Leah's face was still twisted with anger, I could see a flicker of confusion and fear in her eyes.
With a cold snort, she sneered. "So, you're crazy."
I grinned, the smile stretching across my face. "Yep, crazy people don't have to pay with their lives for killing someone."
Lena was so enraged that she clutched her chest as if she were about to faint.
I pretended to be shocked, standing beside Alex. "I don't have any money."
Lena extended her finger toward me, her whole body shaking with the force of her anger as she screamed, "Get out!"
"Mom, you should rest. Laurel and I will head back now," Alex said, reaching out to hold my hand. He took two steps before suddenly halting, turning back to look at Lena. "You get some rest. We'll come back to check on you later."
Alex, ever the sly one, was still trying to intimidate the two of them even as we were leaving.
Once we got into the car, Alex looked at me, his long eyelashes framing his beautiful eyes. But beneath the surface, there seemed to be a layer of ice, a chill that was unmistakable.
The weather was not cold, but I could feel sweat beading on the back of my neck.
Alex slowly undid the top button of his shirt. "Do you really not fear death at all?"
His voice held anger, but it was still as smooth and pleasant as ever. Only now, it carried an edge that sent a shiver down my spine.
I tugged at the corner of my lips into a smile. "Death is not really that scary, is it?"
Alex frowned deeply, giving me a dark, brooding look. "I think you really are sick. When are we going to the hospital to get you checked out?"
I smiled back at him. "Sure."
The truth was that I had been diagnosed with depression, and yes, I had thought about ending it all at times. But in the end, those painful, miserable days were something I survived through.
Because someone had already taken on that fate for me, and it was my responsibility to live on in his place.
"You really hacked into Leah's laptop and the company's system?" Alex asked again.
I sighed softly, "I lied to her. I only sent a virus software to her system. So when I said I hacked her company, she believed me. I'm pretty sure Leah saw the information in her company's group chat."
Alex stared at me, disbelief all over his face. "Laurel, aren't you afraid she'll come after you again?"
"Aren't you my protector?" I grinned at Alex. "Well, I did hack into her laptop and grabbed what I needed. For now, she won't come after me."
I couldn't stop myself from yawning and let my stiff body fall back against the seat.
"I'm going to take a nap, I'm too tired," I muttered, closing my eyes tightly.
In reality, I wasn't that tired. I just didn't want Alex to keep pressing me with questions.
I hadn't wanted to get involved in the mess with the Herrera family, but life had a way of pulling me into things I couldn't avoid.
Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, my phone in my bag vibrated. I hesitated for a moment, then pulled the phone out. It was a text from Marvin. [Ivan has disappeared.]
