Ivan would never just disappear without a reason. Even if he wanted to leave, he would at least leave a note.
I quickly typed a message to Marvin: [Send people to find him. Alive or dead, we need to see him.]
Once I sent the message, all traces of sleepiness vanished. I sat up straight, cleared my throat, and fixed my gaze on Alex. Just as I was about to ask about Ivan's family, Alex's phone suddenly rang.
He glanced at the caller ID and frowned ever so slightly, but after a brief hesitation, he answered the call.
"Hi, Alex." A woman's voice came from the other end of the line. Alex shifted in his seat, lowering the volume of the phone, and he remained silent, only saying "Okay" before hanging up.
I couldn't hear what was said on the call, clearly because Alex didn't want me to. The situation between them seemed unusual.
"What were you about to say to me?" Alex looked at me, his deep eyes so beautiful that they could easily make someone lose their train of thought.
"I hired an assistant, just letting you know," I replied.
I couldn't tell Alex about Ivan's disappearance yet, especially since it involved people from the Hill family. If I made a move too soon, it might tip off Juliet and end up making things worse.
Alex nodded and smiled faintly. "What are you looking at?"
I blinked, realizing that I had been staring at his soaked clothes the entire time. "Nothing. I wasn't looking at anything."
"Why be shy? We've shared a bed, after all," Alex said calmly.
My face immediately turned red.
There was a driver in the car, and yet he had the nerve to say something like that. It was almost as if he were completely disregarding the proud and aloof image I had once had of him.
'What kind of tone is that? Why does it sound like I forced him?' I silently grumbled, feeling a little angry, and I lay back on the seat.
"I'm heading back to the company soon. You should go home first," Alex said in a voice that was neither too loud nor too soft.
When I didn't respond, he turned to the driver. "Take me to the company entrance first, then take Mrs. Herrera home."
I ignored what he said, keeping my eyes tightly closed.
His trip to the company was probably just an excuse. The real matter had to be related to the phone call from earlier.
I wasn't concerned about who she was. I had my own matters to deal with.
But from the way Alex spoke, I figured he would have Lawrence following me around for the next few days. After all, I had just crossed Leah, the most troublesome person in the Herrera family.
Less than twenty minutes later, Alex got out of the car.
When I heard the car door close, I felt a wave of irritation and rolled over, only to realize that at some point, a thin blanket had been draped over me.
I felt a warm feeling in my chest, then scolded myself for being so easily satisfied. A small gesture, and I was already touched. But in reality, any act of kindness could be faked.
By the time I got back to the villa, my stomach was growling from hunger.
As soon as I got out of the car, I saw Sophina helping Hector out of the house. "Mrs. Herrera, you're finally back," Hector said, visibly relieved.
It seemed that Hector had been on edge since he knew I went to Herrera Manor, probably worried that something would go wrong.
Seeing Hector's anxious expression, I had a hunch that Alex's injury had something to do with Raphael and Lena.
But the injury on his back didn't look like it was caused by a cane. It resembled the marks left by a whip.
It was widely known throughout the Herrera family that everyone feared Alex, yet Leah not only wasn't afraid of him, she probably even wanted him dead.
Although they weren't full-blooded siblings, their relationship was far from peaceful. There was definitely something between them that I didn't know.
"Mrs. Herrera, are you hurt?" Sophina asked softly, her voice laced with concern.
I looked at her, puzzled. "Did you move all your things?"
Sophina nodded. "Miss Herrera just threw everything out."
I reached out and patted her shoulder. "It's fine. Don't be upset."
"I'm not upset," Sophina said with a bashful smile, her head dropping slightly. "Honestly, I'm kind of happy. To be honest, I don't even know how long I could keep working with Miss Herrera.
"Every day I'm walking on eggshells, but I just can't bring myself to quit. I feel too bitter about it."
Her words struck a chord with me. Back when I was with Austin, I could sense his indifference and impatience long before things fell apart.
But I couldn't accept it. I had been by his side for six whole years, and just when I thought we were close to getting married, I was forced to break up with him.
It felt like no matter who I married, it would be the same. Love had an expiration date. Some relationships lasted longer than others.
But I just couldn't let go. I kept hoping that after we got married, things would get better. I believed that everything would change for the better.
Only later did I realize that what I had been holding onto wasn't the love I once had with Austin, but rather the dream of a family I had longed for.
Hector had the servants warm up some food.
There were a number of bodyguards standing around both inside and outside the house. Each of them was tall, broad-shouldered, and intimidating.
It seemed like Alex was worried that someone like Leah might come back to make trouble for me.
But after the way I had beaten Leah, I doubted she would dare to show up in front of me openly, no matter how angry she was. After all, I had dirt on her.
Lena agreed to my marriage to Alex, probably to keep me from exposing Leah's secrets. Once I became a member of the Herrera family, they would feel more secure. After all, when one rose, we all rose; when one fell, we all fell.
But getting Leah to swallow this defeat wouldn't be easy.
After dinner, I sent Angela a text to let her know I was safe.
"You're really lucky, huh? You managed to escape danger and even turned it into an opportunity," Angela teased from the other end of the line.
"That's what you call turning the tables," I replied, collapsing onto the bed, feeling completely drained.
"You've caused quite a bit of trouble, yet Mr. Herrera didn't scold you and even protected you. Laurel, you really are lucky," she said.
I didn't tell Angela everything that happened at Herrera Manor, just the basics. But even from what I did say, Angela seemed convinced that Alex was genuinely fond of me.
Angela had a meeting to attend in the afternoon, so the call didn't last long before she hung up.
As I thought about her words, a cold smile spread across my face. 'A handsome man, with money, and knows how to be considerate? That's the textbook definition of a con artist,' I wondered.
But with Alex's looks, if he wanted to scam someone, I bet everyone would willingly fall for it.
I slept soundly, deeply, until my phone rang, waking me up.
When I saw the unfamiliar number, I hesitated before answering. "Is this Laurel? Please come to the hospital right away. Your friend Angela has had an accident and is in the emergency room."
