Upon hearing Javier's response, a chill ran down my spine.
Angela's time of death was recorded as 5:20 p.m., and it was highly possible that the last phone call she received was from Javier. She had been driving at the time.
But after the accident, the police didn't find Angela's phone in the car. At the time, I hadn't paid much attention to it.
"Laurel, what's going on?" Javier's voice came through the phone again.
"I'm fine." I inhaled deeply, trying to keep my voice as steady and normal as possible.
"What did Angela say to you?" I asked.
"She said Isaac had asked her out." Javier's voice was low, tinged with a sense of unease. "They're not really together, are they?"
I felt a surge of anxiety. Angela had told me she was coming to Newton City for work, but I had always assumed it was because she feared that I might be bullied by the Herrera family. I never imagined that her real reason for coming here was Isaac.
But I couldn't help wondering why Isaac had asked Angela out in the first place. Was she on her way to a date when the accident happened? If she hadn't gone to meet Isaac, maybe Angela wouldn't have gotten into that accident.
'Was Angela's death really just a tragic accident?' I thought.
"Laurel, are you listening to me?" Javier's voice broke through my thoughts.
"I'm just sorting through some clothes. I heard what you said," I replied, opening the closet and putting clothes from the suitcase inside.
"Laurel, you're back?" Javier's voice now held a note of excitement.
"Yes," I answered quickly, but then I heard a noise coming from outside the room.
"I've got to go. Something came up," I said, hanging up the phone and heading toward the door.
As I walked into the living room, I saw Alex standing there, carrying his luggage. His face was dark with anger, and his gaze was fixed firmly on my phone.
"Why was your phone off? Didn't Sophina tell you I was looking for you?" Alex took slow, deliberate steps toward me, his eyes icy and sharp, emanating a cold, ominous energy.
'The phone was off because it had no charge. Why is he this upset?' I thought. However, I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words to respond.
A strong instinct for self-preservation made me take a couple of steps back. "The phone was dead. I just turned it back on."
"Then why didn't you call me as soon as you turned it on?" His voice was smooth, calm even, but his eyes gleamed with a terrifying coldness.
"I answered the first call that came in right after I turned it on," I replied, though I didn't know why I was explaining myself. Whether I answered the call or not was entirely my choice.
"Oh, really?" Alex smiled faintly.
I froze for a moment, sensing a cold sharpness hidden in his smile, like there was a knife hidden beneath it.
I tried to step away, but Alex suddenly grabbed my arm, his fingers tightening around it with an unsettling force. He then extended his hand toward me, his knuckles sharp and precise.
"Who called you?" Alex's voice was soft and gentle, almost as though he were afraid of frightening me, but there was an undeniable force behind his words.
It was so scary. He was being too gentle. It only made me feel more frightened.
I cursed myself inwardly. 'Hey, now way? Why am I so scared? He's not that scary!'
I took a deep breath, trying to force a smile, and looked up at him. "What, don't you trust me?"
"Correct." He nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Why do you look guilty?"
I wanted to roll my eyes at him, but when I saw the sly expression on his face, I knew better than to challenge him. Begrudgingly, I handed over the phone.
There was no secret on the phone that I needed to hide. If he wanted to check it, he could.
Alex took the phone and sat down on the couch, flipping through it with a surprisingly focused expression.
"You can just check the contacts. Is it really necessary to take this long?" I finally couldn't help but complain softly.
Suddenly, Alex's demeanor shifted. "Did Jamilah contact you?" Alex asked, his gaze probing, a hint of suspicion in his tone.
I hadn't planned on telling Alex. I figured I could hide it for one more day, but unexpectedly, Alex had returned early.
I knew that if I wanted to keep it hidden, I couldn't anymore. After all, tomorrow I would be reporting to Adams Group, taking over Angela's work at the Bluestar Hotel.
I wasn't worried about the job itself. Though I hadn't officially worked in hotel management, I had learned a great deal from Angela over the years. My only real concern was Alex.
"Yes," I replied, knowing I couldn't lie to him, nor did I see the point. If he wanted to know, he would sooner or later.
"What did she ask you to do?" Alex's eyes darkened in a way that sent a shiver down my spine. His usually calm voice had taken on an edge, sharper and colder.
"She wanted me to take over Angela's responsibilities," I said.
"Sophina didn't tell you?" Alex's voice grew even more serious, the tension rising between us. "Didn't I tell you not to get involved with the Adams family mess?"
"This is my business," I shot back, my voice tense. "I just want to do something for Angela."
"You think you can go up against the Parks family?" Alex's eyes narrowed, his gaze now colder than ever.
I froze. 'The Parks family might be targeting Seastar Hotel?' I thought.
The confusion swirled inside me as I looked back at Alex, my mind racing with the implications of his words.
Javier had just told me about Isaac's true motives for meeting Angela. Isaac had come for Seastar Hotel. He was a clever man. Since Jamilah had turned him down for a partnership, Isaac had likely tried to go through Angela to get what he wanted.
Obviously, Isaac could tell at a glance that Angela liked him. It seemed like Isaac had been playing a dangerous game with Angela. 'Was he trying to use her feelings against her?' I wondered.
But tragically, Angela never had the chance to even meet his crush one last time before her life was cut short.
"Jamilah and Michael got divorced," I said quietly.
"You think that just because they're divorced, the Parks family will choose a new business partner?" Alex's gaze was fixed and steady as if he could see through every doubt I had. "Do you know the Parks family owns the largest business club in Wadiff City?
"That power is the reason they're the biggest. Their influence is enough to make anyone afraid."
"Are you scared?" I asked, almost teasing, though I could feel the tension rising. "If you're so afraid, then why are you still refusing to marry into the Parks family? Kailyn wants you, not Austin."
Alex lowered his eyes, his posture lazy as he crossed his legs, but his expression was unreadable. "The Parks family wants to ally with the Herrera family to take control of the business park in Nifelheim City. The marriage can be with anyone, not just me."
I froze at his words. "Austin is going to marry Kailyn?"
Alex nodded slowly. He paused for a moment before lifting his gaze to meet mine again. "Next Monday, at Austin's mother's birthday party, they'll announce the marriage. Laurel, you have two days to think about whether you have the ability to protect the Adams family."
I clenched my fists, a deep resolve hardening within me. "This is Nifelheim City, not Wadiff City. I refuse to believe the Parks family can just walk all over us here." My voice was firm. "I will protect the Adams family for Angela."
"Good luck," Alex said quietly.
