"She is my assistant. Do you two know each other?" I turned to look at Sophina.
Sophina did not show any sign of joy. Instead, she looked coldly at Javier. "I don't think we're very familiar."
Sophina and Javier had been classmates in high school, and Sophina was a year older than him. They first became acquainted because one of Javier's dorm mates had a crush on Sophina.
He asked Javier to deliver a love letter, but as soon as Javier handed it over, the discipline teacher caught him red-handed. Because of this, Sophina was reprimanded.
Javier, being the righteous person he was, took the blame for his dorm mate and admitted that it was he who had written the love letter.
What he hadn't expected was that Sophina's parents, because of such a minor issue, decided to transfer her to another school without even giving her a chance to explain.
Javier never imagined that, years later, he would encounter Sophina again.
Sophina claimed that she didn't remember the incident, but I could tell she was lying, as she had a tendency to show subtle signs whenever she was not telling the truth. I could easily see that she remembered Javier, and, if anything, still held a grudge.
It wasn't until Sophina learned that Javier had taken the fall for someone else that her expression softened a little.
Back in their second year of high school, Sophina's parents had placed all their hopes on her. When they found out she had received a love letter, they panicked and immediately transferred her to another school, without considering her feelings at all.
The sudden move meant she didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to her close friends.
"I'm sorry. I really didn't think about it back then," Javier said, scratching the back of his head with a hint of embarrassment.
Sophina sighed. "It wasn't your fault. You don't need to feel guilty about it."
"You're Angela's assistant?" Javier asked.
Sophina nodded and smiled. "I did well on my college entrance exam. I didn't become an assistant because I didn't do well."
Javier nodded awkwardly. "Laurel, let's go eat. Otherwise, they'll be waiting for us."
Just as we were about to leave, Sophina suddenly stopped and looked at me. "And Mr. Herrera?"
"Alex is back, too?" Javier's voice held a hint of excitement. "I'll go get him."
Sophina stared at Javier's departing figure, murmuring softly, "Doesn't he think Mr. Herrera is terrifying at all?"
As she spoke, I realized that my family seemed to really like Alex.
My phone suddenly buzzed. A video had been sent from an unknown number, and I furrowed my brow.Curiosity got the better of me, and I opened the video. In it, a large figure blocked the woman's face beneath him.
The man's heavy breathing was mixed with the woman's moans. Though I could only see half of the man's profile, I immediately recognized him as Austin.
"Austin, you're so bad," the woman's breathless voice came through. "Take it easy."
Even without seeing her face, I knew exactly who it was. What I didn't expect was that they were so eager to get in bed together. It definitely wasn't their first time.
I felt disgusted. In front of others and our family, they acted like good friends, but behind closed doors, they were involved in this secret affair.
I closed the video and looked up, only to find Sophina standing beside me, her face red as a tomato.
I couldn't help but wonder how Amanda would react if she saw this video. Would she get so angry she might have a heart attack?
I glanced at the phone number. I was now trying to figure out who could have taken this video and deliberately sent it to me.
As I was deep in thought, another message came through. [Use this video to threaten Rosemary and bring my mom to see me. I'll send you the time and place later.]
I froze when I saw the message.
Footsteps approached from behind, and I quickly pulled Sophina into the room next door. I then made my way to the bathroom in Yvette's room.
My phone buzzed again, and another video was sent. In it, Rosemary was nestled in Austin's arms, gazing up at him with deep affection.
"Austin, you're about to marry Kailyn. You should be with her," Rosemary said.
Hearing this, Austin lowered his head and gently placed a kiss on Rosemary's forehead. He then lifted her chin with his finger, a faint smile in his eyes. "My marriage to Kailyn is purely a business arrangement.
"I don't like her, so don't worry. Even after we're married, I won't touch her. You have to trust me."
Rosemary saw the nervousness in Austin's demeanor and smirked, the corners of her lips curling up. "Men are all good at lying. I don't believe you."
"Rosemary, I'm serious about you. When Laurel was by my side for six years, did I ever touch her?" Austin said, his tone so smug it was revolting.
He had the audacity to cheat in a relationship and yet wore a look of false devotion. It was laughable.
"Laurel is just too foolish. She believed your lies. You probably just think she's dirty. If I hadn't come to you that night, would you have slept with Laurel?" Rosemary's gaze burned with intensity as she stared at Austin.
"It would have never happened. Besides her pretty face, she's nothing like you," Austin said. His heartfelt words immediately made Rosemary, who was originally unhappy, smile brightly.
Her mood lightened at the compliment. "Perhaps Laurel will never know that the door was intentionally left open for her. Unfortunately, someone else got the benefit."
Austin chuckled. "There's nothing to regret. He had an emergency and couldn't make it. But we got the money."
"Poor Laurel, believing you would be the one to spend the night with her." Rosemary narrowed her eyes, and with a finger, traced a slow circle on Austin's bare chest. "She probably never imagined that night you kept bothering me, keeping me up for the entire evening."
Though I had long suspected something was going on between them, I hadn't anticipated it happening earlier than I thought.
But thinking back, it was clear I had been too trusting of Austin, overlooking all the signs right in front of me.
Since their affair started, Rosemary had shown up more often around us. Even when Austin bought us both gifts, they were always identical.
It became clear over time that Rosemary was openly competing with me for Austin, and it wasn't until six years later that I finally understood. Some men truly were scum.
"Austin, was it really Alex who came into the room that night?" Rosemary looked up at him, her eyes searching for confirmation.
"Impossible. It wasn't him," Austin replied quickly.
"Why wouldn't it be? After all, Alex had never met Laurel before." Rosemary narrowed her eyes, a flicker of hatred flashing in her deep gaze. "Besides, Alex admitted it himself that night.
"He said it was him, and that was when he first started liking Laurel. Did he lie?"
