"Laurel, what is going on with you? You come back, and you look like your mind is somewhere else?" Maliyah asked, linking her arm with mine and sitting down beside me, while Sophina was busy booking a hotel on her phone.
I didn't think it was necessary, especially since I had no idea when Alex would be back. He had left after dinner to go to the office for a meeting, telling me to rest early.
But Sophina still seemed to feel like she was intruding on us.
"I am fine. I am just a little tired," I said with a smile, gently patting Maliyah's hand.
Not long after, I received a message from Alex. [Someone will bring the key to the room downstairs. Tomorrow, I'll send someone to clean it. Have her stay downstairs with the nanny for now, so it will be easier to take care of us.]
I read it, then got another message. [I don't like having other people in small spaces. I am a bit of a clean freak, and it will disturb our nighttime activities.]
I raised my hand and rubbed my eyebrows. It seemed that Sophina was right. She was indeed despised.
'By the way, nighttime activities? What was he thinking?' I wondered.
I couldn't help but acknowledge that Alex's desire for sex was undeniably strong. I suspected it might be due to the medication he had been taking.
The thought of Bonnie handing him that soup earlier made me wonder if she had slipped something into it.
"Why are all the hotels nearby booked up?" Sophina grumbled, pouting slightly.
"Sophina, stop looking for a hotel. Alex just sent me a message. There is a room downstairs where you can stay with the maid who will come tomorrow. Someone will bring you the key soon, and the cleaning staff will come in the morning. You can just stay here for the night," I said.
Sophina looked confused. "So, I don't need to find a hotel? And I don't need to rent a place?"
I nodded, unable to hold back a yawn. "I am going to sleep for a bit. You should stop worrying about the hotels. The city center's hotels are probably fully booked by now anyway."
Maliyah, who had just finished cleaning up after dinner in the kitchen, walked out with a curious look on her face. "Sophina, why do you need a hotel? There are rooms at Laurel's place."
"Mr. Herrera prefers peace and quiet. It's not appropriate for me to stay there," Sophina explained frankly.
"If you can't find a hotel, stop looking," Javier said, speaking up. "You'll have to move again tomorrow anyway. Why not just crash here for the night? You can sleep in my room, and I'll take the couch."
"I'm fine. I can sleep on the couch," Sophina replied.
I yawned again. I hadn't had a proper rest in days, and now that I had a moment to relax, I felt completely drained, like sleep was creeping up on me.
"Javier, take good care of Sophina. Don't mess with her; she is mine now," I said, shaking my head as I struggled to stay awake. My eyelids felt heavy.
As I reached the door and opened it to step outside, I saw someone standing in front of the neighboring door, knocking.
I thought it might be the person Alex sent to bring the key, but as I was about to speak, the man turned around.
I froze for a moment. He looked to be in his early thirties, dressed in black, but he was not a stranger. I felt like I had seen him before.
"Miss Parks, long time no see," the man said softly.
"Who are you?" I asked, confused, but I could tell right away that he was not the person Alex had sent. He wasn't smiling and instead gave off an air of distant coldness.
"Madam sent me to find you. She wants to speak with you," he said.
"Madam?" I repeated, still unsure.
He pulled out a business card and handed it to me. As I took it, I felt a jolt in my chest; it was Henry's card. I had one just like it in my bag.
Marvin said Henry had an accident today. He was not dead, and he was sent home from the hospital. The situation didn't look good at all.
The first person involved in all this was Ivan. After an accident in the outskirts, Marvin noticed something was off and began investigating.
When Ivan returned to Newton City, he had a drink and planned to drive out. As he was walking halfway down the road, he was approached by a few people asking for directions.
After their brief exchange, Ivan got ready to leave, but he suddenly felt his hands go numb. He assumed he had drunk fake alcohol, remembering the last time he drove and nearly lost his life. He decided to flag down a ride back home, but on the way, he passed out.
It wasn't until they reached his destination that the driver woke him up, and Ivan realized something was seriously wrong. He suspected that whatever he drank had been tampered with.
He went to a private clinic for a check-up, and to his shock, he found out that he had drugs in his system and in significant amounts.
Ivan had suddenly collapsed because of a certain dosage of sleeping pills. The only people who could have poisoned him were the ones closest to him.
Afterward, Ivan deliberately got into a huge argument with his father to make it look like he had left the house. His real plan was to get away to detox, but unfortunately, not only did he fail to get clean, he ended up using again.
If Ivan really wanted to quit, it would be nearly impossible. That was when he thought of me. He kept saying that someone was trying to kill him. Although he had suspects, he couldn't find any concrete evidence.
What scared Ivan even more was the possibility that if he went back to the Hill family, not only would he be putting his own life at risk, but he could endanger his entire family as well.
Though I had no idea where Ivan had gone, when I received the video he had found, I knew he was still alive.
But Angela wasn't as lucky. She died in a car accident.
Marvin told me that, after inspecting the scene, nothing suspicious was found, but the car's brakes seemed to have been tampered with.
If Ivan and Angela's incidents were just coincidences, then Henry's surely wasn't.
Marvin suspected that the person behind all of this originally wanted to take out everyone at once, but failed. Now, they were picking us off one by one.
If someone was indeed orchestrating this, then the mastermind was no ordinary player.
"Mr. Yeats, how is he?" I looked up at the man standing in front of me.
His deep eyes locked onto mine, and after a long pause, he spoke. "You will find out when you get there."
I gave a light chuckle, understanding what he meant, and nodded.
It seemed Henry wasn't in serious danger, or else he wouldn't have used his wife's name to get me to come.
"Alright, I will follow you," I said, furrowing my brow. "I was planning to get some good rest, but it looks like I will have to sleep on the road now."
As I walked downstairs, I saw Lawrence's car at the door, but there was no one inside.
The man led me to a black Maybach parked by the roadside, and I sat up straight, feeling a slight unease in my chest.
Henry clearly wasn't an ordinary person. Not only had he found my address, but he also made sure to send my driver away. Most importantly, he had somehow managed to save his own life, relying solely on his own resources.
I didn't think it was necessary, especially since I had no idea when Alex would be back. He had left after dinner to go to the office for a meeting, telling me to rest early.
