The sudden ringing of my phone snapped me out of my thoughts. I pulled it out of my bag and glanced at the caller ID.
My brow furrowed slightly. It was a call from Alex's contact. After a brief hesitation, I answered. "Is there something you need?" Before Alex could speak, I quickly cut in.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, and as soon as the first word came through, I blurted out, "If there's nothing urgent, don't bother me."
Just then, a calm voice rang in my ear. "Do you want to wash your hands off?"
I instinctively responded, "Okay."
It wasn't until the call ended that I finally snapped out of my daze and shook my head. "Never mind."
Asher, ever the considerate one, spoke up, "A burn will blister if you don't treat it."
At that moment, I heard a faint noise from outside. It was Marvin's voice.
"It's getting late. My friend might be waiting impatiently." I took a deep breath, regaining my composure. "Mr. Yeats, I'll take my leave now."
Henry gave a small nod and coughed lightly. "If you need anything, just let me know. And please, don't call me Mr. Yeats. It sounds too distant. Just call me Henry."
"Alright," I replied, understanding that if I were to return to the Parks family, I would need Henry's help. Keeping a distance wouldn't help build trust.
"Henry, Jenna, I'll be leaving now," I said.
Jenna blinked, her eyes reddening slightly before she hurriedly handed me a burn ointment, passing it to me.
"Take this. Apply it while you're on your way. After all, a woman's hands are her second face. It's already turning red," she said kindly.
I took the ointment and offered her a faint smile. "Thank you, Jenna."
"Asher, please walk Laurel out," Jenna added, her eyes full of reluctance, a soft smile on her lips.
I didn't fully understand what Jenna was so happy about. 'Is she really comforted just because I called her by her name? Does she think that by calling her that, I'll somehow forgive her for Quinn and Larry's deaths?' I wondered.
"Laurel, when you have time, come visit me," Jenna said, walking me to the door with a lingering sense of attachment.
It was easy for her to ask for company, considering her position as the wife of the chief. Plus, she had her son to be with her.
"My mom seems to really like you," Asher spoke up, his voice slow and calm, barely above a whisper.
I lowered my gaze and smiled faintly. 'Like me? Is that so?' I thought.
When I was younger, Jenna indeed had a certain affection for me. She would often say how she wished she had a daughter since she already had two sons.
Sometimes, she would stroke my hair and whisper, "If I had a daughter, maybe my husband's temper would soften a little. After all, a daughter is a father's little lover in a past life."
She had always been mistaken. That phrase came from a Freud essay discussing the twisted psychology of a father with pedophilic tendencies. But somehow, it had been misinterpreted by many as a romantic sentiment about father-daughter relationships.
The reality was far from that. A deeply flawed person wouldn't change just because someone else came into their life.
"Laurel, can I add you on my contacts?" Asher stopped in his tracks, his gaze serious as he looked at me.
I was momentarily stunned, surprised by the polite yet direct request from the man standing before me. 'If Quinn were still alive, perhaps he'd be even more handsome and more captivating than Asher,' I thought.
I was about to refuse when Asher's low, magnetic voice reached my ears again. "It's about Quinn and Larry."
Asher bit his lip, his dark, sharp eyes betraying a hint of sadness and concern.
"Okay." I nodded.
Marvin appeared in the doorway when he saw me, his eyes scanning me from head to toe. When he saw the burn on my hand, a sharp frown tugged at his brow, his cold gaze showing no attempt to hide his rage.
But when he looked at Asher, his eyes widened in surprise, only for the emotion to vanish as quickly as it appeared.
"How did you manage to do that?" Marvin asked, his voice clipped.
"I burned myself by accident," I said.
Asher's gaze shifted to Marvin, who was standing next to me, and a smile tugged at his lips. "And who is this?" he asked.
"Marvin Adams," Marvin replied shortly.
"I'm Asher Yeats," Asher said, offering Marvin a polite smile before his gaze returned to me. "Laurel, make sure to apply the ointment. I won't walk you out. Goodbye."
"Bye." I nodded.
Once Asher turned and walked back into the villa, closing the door behind him, I let out a long sigh as I pulled Marvin into the car. "What were you shouting about outside?"
"No way? Do you know him well? Why does it seem like he's so close to you?" Marvin looked at me, his eyes tinged with frustration, as though he was a little upset. "I was worried you'd get into trouble."
"What could happen to me? Does Asher look a lot like Quinn?" I asked.
Marvin was silent for a moment before nodding.
"He's Quinn's half-brother," I explained.
For some reason, I couldn't shake the feeling that Asher's gaze on me was oddly intense.
"How is that possible? Henry's wife is Kelly, right?" Marvin frowned slightly, then immediately seemed to put the pieces together. "Did she change her name?"
He let out a small, derisive laugh. "I never would have guessed she'd transform into the wife of the district chief."
I smiled faintly and raised a finger to my lips in a shh gesture, signaling Marvin to be quiet. I pulled another Bluetooth earpiece from my pocket and handed it to him. Then, I glanced out the window, silently urging him to start the car.
At that moment, the earpiece crackled to life.
"Dad, are you really planning to let Laurel return to the Parks family?" It was Asher's voice.
"She can only survive if she goes back to the Parks family," Henry's voice came through, low and hoarse.
"But Maddox is still her biological father. Will she really turn against him?" Asher questioned.
"If she knew what happened back then, she would want revenge, no doubt," Henry sighed deeply.
"But if Yvette finds out, won't she resent you for this?" Asher pressed.
"No mother would sacrifice her daughter's life just to save her own," Henry responded, his voice firm, followed by a light cough.
"Dad, let me help you back to your room," Asher said, the sound of footsteps following.
Then, there was silence.
Suddenly, Marvin slammed the brakes, pulling the car to the side of the road. His eyes were wide, staring at me in disbelief.
He seemed unable to process what he had just heard, taking a long moment to digest the information before he turned to me. "Laurel, your father is Maddox?"
I nodded, keeping my expression neutral.
"Did you know this all along?" Marvin asked.
He knew me too well, and I didn't want to keep hiding the truth anymore. After all, moving forward, Marvin was the only person I could truly trust.
I nodded again.
"Then Isaac and Kailyn are your half-siblings?" Marvin's expression grew darker with each word.
I sighed deeply, "Isaac is my real brother. I only found out about this today."
