"You'll compensate?" Abigail sneered and said, "Where do you get the money from? Isn't it all from my dad anyway?" As soon as she finished speaking, Abigail could not help but roll her eyes at Helena.
I suppressed my smile on the corners of my lips. Abigail's disgust for Helena was not any less than mine.
It made sense. Although Helena was an illegitimate daughter, she was still the eldest daughter. Her outfit was expensive; her father must have treated her well. Moreover, she had Alex by her side, so her life was not bad.
"One million dollars; it's not that I can't afford it." I slowly raised my head and glanced at Alex. His sharp, cold gaze carried a warning. Was he afraid I would expose the secret between Helena and him?
What a joke! They should not have acted so intimately in public if they were so worried. However, it seemed like no one present suspected anything between them.
The Herrera and the Cole families seemed to have a good relationship. Rumors had it that the head of the Herrera family and the Cole and Harvey families were friends for a long time. It was not surprising that the younger generation could get along well.
I wondered how Samantha would feel if she found out her cousin was the one who stole her beloved. Maybe it was precisely due to the deep ties between the three families that their relationship faced obstacles.
In fact, it did not matter. After all, the person engaged to Alex back then was not Samantha.
I sighed softly and said, "It's just that I didn't steal the ring. I don't want to compensate." After saying thta, I raised my gaze meaningfully toward Alex and asked, "When will you return my emerald ring?"
Alex's expression darkened slightly; he clearly did not expect me to bring up that ring. Abigail suddenly jumped up from her chair, pointing at me and yelling, "Laurel, are you shameless? Alex is about to get married, and you still want to be a homewrecker?
"I've introduced you to Mr. Rogers and my cousin, and you're still dissatisfied? Looks like you're just insatiable, you slut!"
I slowly raised my eyes to meet Abigail's furious gaze, my tone indifferent. "None of your damn business," I said.
I had been sitting at the dinner table for ages without touching my fork, and I was starving. Playing along with their act was exhausting. "Since I'm unwelcome, I won't bother you all any longer," I said.
I turned to Kent, who had been watching the show unfold with a cold gaze, and said smiling faintly, "Mr. Rogers, can I borrow your phone?"
He was a gentleman. If, back then, he had really bought my first night, he would have been despicable. However, I had to admit, he was quite an interesting man.
Of course, that did not make him a good person. I had always believed one would be influenced by the company one kept.
"This is my number. Let's meet again when we're available," I said, giving Kent a sultry smile before I turned to look at Queenie. "You said I have your ring?" I flipped my bag upside down while I spoke, dumping everything onto the table.
Nothing much was in the bag but a broken phone, a power bank, wet wipes, tissues, and a small peace charm. I always kept that charm in my bag. My mother said it would keep me safe, though I never believed in such things.
When Queenie did not see her ring in my bag, she shifted her gaze to my outfit. I was wearing a coat over a long black slip dress. The dress was a gift from Angela. I had not worn it before because the back was cut too low. I thus had to pair it with a coat as an extra layer.
"Did you see it?" I sneered and asked. Before Queenie could respond, I removed the hairpin from my head, letting my long hair down. Then, I shrugged off my coat.
A seductive smile curled at the corners of my lips. Was I trying to seduce men? What a joke! That was child's play for me, but I had no interest in such tricks.
Figure, beauty, and charm, things other women envied, meant nothing to me as they did not just attract men who could not control themselves but also made women hate me enough to want me to die. They cursed me with the filthiest insults, but their words meant nothing to me.
Angela always said, "If one must perish, it is best to do so in pursuit of beauty and pleasure." She must have been talking about women like me.
"Can I leave now?" My eyes swept everyone in the room, the corners of my lips curling into a smile.
Alex's face darkened, his voice laced with anger. "Get out!" Only then did the others snap back to reality.
Sean's gaze toward me was fiery. He picked up the glass beside him and took a big gulp of water. I could not help but laugh in my heart. Was he so turned on that he was practically drooling? Meanwhile, Kent remained cold and distant, casting me a deep glance.
"Laurel, you bitch..." Before Abigail could finish her insult, Sean slapped her across the face. The room fell silent.
In less than three seconds, Sean's angry voice sounded. "Abigail, you're an unmarried woman. How can you say such vile things? You've embarrassed not just the Cole family but also the Reynolds family!"
Oh wow, so being turned on made men defend their dignity too? Queenie stared at me in disbelief and muttered, "No... that's impossible... How could it not be there?"
"Miss Brown, I've told you I don't have it. Maybe you should inspect the restroom again." With that, I put my coat on and gathered my things.
As I was about to leave, Kent stood up and said, "I won't disturb you all either." While speaking, he lightly grabbed my arm and looked at me with a faint smile. "I'll send you home."
I could not have asked for more. The reason I had given him my number was to find out whether the president that Austin mentioned was actually him.
Not many people in Austin's circle had met me. While he mostly hung out with wealthy scions, he was not the type to give up easy money. So I was certain that the president must have paid him a hefty sum for him to throw me into that pit.
However, who would have thought that, due to a twist of fate, a different man ended up in my room that night?
I nodded slightly and was about to turn around when I heard a bang behind my back. Alex slammed his glass onto the table, a cold smile on his lips. "Laurel, come over," he said.
My heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, I wanted to head straight for the door. Was the old fox angry now? So he could do whatever he wanted, but I was not allowed to retaliate?
