"I'll send you home," Alex said, his gaze landing on me, his tone leaving no room for refusal.
I stared at Alex with a half-smile, my eyes playful, my voice faint. "Don't you need to accompany Helena?"
The fact that he was here meant the gathering was not over yet. After all, Helena hardly had a chance to come out, so she would naturally want to stay out longer.
Just as Alex was about to speak, his phone rang. Seizing the opportunity, I broke free my hand, the corners of my lips curling into a smile as I silently watched the man before my eyes.
He hesitated a moment, then took his phone out of his pocket. He glanced at the caller ID, then did not even glance at me before turning away. He seemed not to want me to hear the conversation.
Even though I did not know who was calling, seeing the anger on his face instantly disappear, I could guess it was Helena. Only when facing Helena would Alex put away the mask he always wore, just like a fox revealing its true form after shedding its human disguise.
In less than a minute, Alex ended the call and looked at me again, his alluring face back in place. I smiled and said casually, "No need to worry about me. Someone else will send me home."
Alex's usual smile appeared as he replied unhurriedly, "I won't send you then. I'm not going back tonight. It's the first flight in the morning the day after tomorrow. Lawrence will accompany you to the airport."
I smiled and nodded, cursing him deep down, "Shameless old fox!" Just as Alex turned to leave, he suddenly stopped and glanced at me, his voice like ice shards. "Remember your place," he said.
He raised an eyebrow, his smile deepening. It sent a shiver through me, sobering me up a little. Then he turned and left without another second of hesitation.
Watching his departing figure, I heaved a sigh of relief, feeling as if all my strength had been drained.
I clenched my fists tightly, my nails digging into my palms. The pain barely kept my exhausted body upright, until the moment Asher appeared in front of me, and I collapsed straight into his arms.
When I woke up, I found myself lying on a bed as soft as clouds, surrounded by the familiar scent of woody cologne. I sat up abruptly, glancing around. I was back at Honeydew Estate, lying in Alex's room.
What shocked me even more was that my clothes had been changed into the same style of pajamas as his. My mind went blank. I could not remember how I got back. Did Asher send me back? But how did he know I lived at Honeydew Estate?
While I struggled to recall what had happened, I heard the door handle turning.I immediately lay back down. After a moment's thought, I sat up again.
"Mrs. Herrera, you're awake?" Sophina hurried over, reaching out to feel my forehead. "Great! Your fever's gone. You scared me to death," she said.
I stared at Sophina blankly, my eyes full of confusion. "I had a fever? Who brought me back?" I asked.
Sophina paused briefly and said, "Mrs. Herrera, you don't remember?" I frowned slightly. This girl could be slow sometimes. If I could remember, why would I bother to ask?
"I don't remember," I said, hand rubbing my aching temples.
"Your friend brought you back and called me to pick you up from downstairs."
"It's a man?" I asked.
Sophina said nodding, "Mrs. Herrera, I've seen that man on television before. He's a top student from Guardvard University. I think his name is A..."
"Asher?" I asked.
"Yes! Asher!" Sophina exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with admiration.
I was silent for a long time, then flopped back onto the bed, feeling like my entire being had been drained. Worse still, my waist ached terribly, and I vaguely remembered having an... indecent dream.
"Did you help me change my clothes?" I asked.
"No," Sophina replied. I froze. Oh no! Did I black out from drinking too much? Did I change my clothes myself and forget about it?
As I wracked my brain, Sophina added, "Mr. Herrera changed them for you."
I sat up abruptly, frowning. "Mr. Herrera?" Didn't Alex say he would not come home tonight? What? Did he have nothing better to do than come home to change my clothes?
"When Mr. Herrera came home and saw you reeking of alcohol, he carried you to the bathroom to wash up, and then..." Sophina suddenly stopped halfway.
"And then what?" I asked.
She bit her lip slightly and said, "Then he told Nancy and me to prepare dinner next door. He also asked me to make some oatmeal for you."
Hearing that, I was in complete turmoil. So he deliberately sent everyone away, then stripped me, bathed me, and... That pervert! He took advantage of me while I was asleep! And here I thought it was just a dream.
I must have lost my mind, letting myself be fooled by Alex's deceptive appearance and falling for his tricks like this. Sophina looked at my indignant face, puzzled. After a while, she asked, "Mrs. Herrera, do you really not remember what happened?'
I was stunned. Something about her tone made me think there was more to it."Mrs. Herrera, when Mr. Herrera came home, you clung to him and wouldn't let go. You even threw up all over him."
After being prompted by Sophina, Alex's face surfaced in my mind. I vaguely recalled I felt unbearably hot and grabbing onto a cold hand. And then... I shivered at the thought of Sophina saying I clung to him and did not let him go.
Yes. I remembered now. When Alex returned, I was lying on the sofa. I had grabbed onto his hand, refusing to let go, and... I had pressed it against my body. Worse still, I had wrapped my arms around his waist. And then I threw up on him.
Perhaps it was too hot then. I took off my clothes and pulled Alex into the bathroom with me. After that, he carried me, his warm breath brushing against my ear as he murmured in a low voice, "Laurel, you started this. You have to face the consequences and punishment for provoking me."
Recalling everything, I was instantly panicked. I had been seduced by that sly old fox again. Indulgence in wine and women truly led to troubles.
"Mrs. Herrera, what's the matter?" Sophina asked.
I hurriedly waved my hand but Sophina smiled ambiguously and said, "Mr. Herrera is really nice to you."
