"Laurel, why didn't you go in with your husband? Or are you waiting for me here?" Marvin walked to me and smiled. His gaze moved from me to Alex and then back to me. Then, he raised an eyebrow. "Are you waiting for me?"
"Wait, why are you here?" I frowned and stared at Marvin.
The next second, I felt stupid enough to ask this question. The Herrera family would naturally invite the four major families of Nifelheim City to their birthday party.
Too many things had happened to the Adams family recently, so they were probably not in the mood to attend any birthday party.
However, even if they didn't come, they would still send the gift here. But I didn't expect the person who gave the gift to be Marvin.
I knew this guy had never liked to attend such parties. Moreover, he had always despised his identity as the Adams family's illegitimate son.
At the thought of this, I clenched my fists, wondering if he had come because he was afraid that I would be kidnapped again.
"This gentleman's clothes match Miss Parks's so much." Helena's soft voice echoed in my ears. There was a gentle smile on her lips. Her black and white eyes looked innocent and harmless, but her words sounded like she was trying to sow discord.
Everyone could see it. So she clearly said that on purpose.
It seemed like I had stolen her limelight.
I couldn't help but think she was as expected of a young girl. I just showed up, but she already wanted to destroy me. She was impatient and naturally was no match for those wealthy young ladies.
No wonder Alex dared not put her in Mrs. Herrera's position. She was like a delicate vase that would break at the slightest touch and was only suitable for viewing and appreciation.
Marvin's gaze finally landed on Helena, and his lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Miss, you're sharp-eyed. The clothes Laurel is wearing were designed by the same stylist as mine, but..."
He paused and frowned slightly. His gaze shifted to me, carrying a hint of confusion in his eyes.
Then, he continued, "Laurel, this lady is standing beside your annoying husband. Those who don't know better would think they're a couple."
Marvin's voice was neither loud nor soft, and he spoke slowly. At this moment, many guests entered the venue one after another. They looked over at us curiously.
Helena's expression changed slightly. It was as if she hadn't expected Marvin to say such unexpected words without scruples.
After all, in her opinion, no one had the guts to offend Alex. Moreover, Marvin said such words when he knew Alex was my husband.
It was obvious that Marvin was insulting her by calling her a mistress...
"Annoying husband?" Alex walked to my side without looking sideways.
"Sir, you must have misunderstood. Alex brought me to the banquet hall. This is my first time in Newton City," Helena said proudly with a gentle smile.
Marvin looked enlightened. "Oh, you're from the Cole family?"
Helena was stunned for a moment before she nodded.
"Then did you come with the Cole family? Or with Mr. Herrera?" Marvin looked like he wanted to get to the bottom of the matter, which was overwhelming.
I reached out and gently tugged at his sleeve, signaling him to stop. I wasn't afraid he would offend Helena, but I didn't want to call for an ambulance before the party started. If he angered Alex, things wouldn't be able to end well.
Helena seemed to have prepared her lines long ago. Just as she was about to speak, Marvin suddenly retracted his gaze and turned to look at me.
"Laurel, let's go. I'll lead you in. Your husband already has a female companion. I happen to lack one." As Marvin spoke, he put his hand in front of me.
Before I could respond, Helena quickly explained, "Miss Parks, don't get the wrong idea. There's nothing between me and Alex. Alex has been waiting for you here for a long time."
I looked up at Alex. His flawlessly handsome face bore no trace of anger, yet his deep, penetrating eyes were fixed steadily on me.
His gaze was like a sharp blade, and his entire body emitted an invisible anger. He didn't say anything, but I could feel his suppressed anger.
Perhaps because I was wearing too little, I felt a cold sensation spreading across my back.
I suddenly realized why Alex was angry. How could I become the target of everyone's attacks if I didn't follow him into the banquet hall? After all, my mission was to take the hit for Helena.
However, I regretted it. I could take the knife for her, but the child in my body could not.
Alex then held my hand and smiled at Marvin. "I'm sorry, Mr. Adams. My wife can't be your female companion. Otherwise, someone will get the wrong idea of your relationship."
Marvin shrugged with a mocking smile on his face. "It doesn't matter if I have a female companion or not. But Mr. Herrera, please remember that you have a wife. If you don't want her one day, please let me know in advance. I'm short of a wife."
As soon as he finished speaking, Marvin looked at Helena with a smile. "As expected of the lady from the Cole family. Seeing is believing."
He deliberately dragged out the last few words. Before Helena could react, Marvin had turned around and walked straight to the banquet hall.
I looked at Marvin's fleeing figure and panicked a little.
I could feel Alex's grip on my hand tighten. However, in the next second, he seemed to have sensed something and stared straight at the decorations on my wrist and neck.
That gaze seemed like he wanted to swallow me whole.
Even Helena, standing at the side and about to speak, forcefully held back what she wanted to say.
I bit my lip and tried to calm down. "Alex."
As soon as I said that, I saw Sophina rushing over with the small bag I had asked her to prepare.
She was wearing a white mid-length dress decorated with many pearls. She tied her long black hair up and secured it with a pearl hairpin. Coupled with her exquisite makeup, Sophina looked different from her usual self, who wore black-framed glasses.
"Laurel, are you okay?" Sophina asked. "I heard from Mr—"
"Alright, I'm fine." I quickly interrupted Sophina. It was not the time to say it yet.
"It's getting late. Let's go in first," said Sophina.
"Okay." I nodded and took the bag from Sophina. I took my hand back and calmly held Alex's arm as I walked toward the banquet hall.
Honestly, I was looking forward to seeing the expressions on everyone's faces when they saw me, especially the person who didn't want me to appear there. I wondered who it could be.
I was so looking forward to it.
At first, I didn't think of using the child I was carrying as a weapon. After all, this child came at the wrong time. Moreover, the person who wanted to deal with me behind my back was too strong. Therefore, I could only take a risk and win by surprise.
