Upon hearing Marvin's words, my heart immediately skipped a beat.
This guy must be out of his mind—he says whatever comes to his mouth. He has no idea what he's doing, openly provoking Alex like that.
Strange glances from all around us quickly turned our way, and those sitting nearby began whispering among themselves.
"Wow, this is quite the game they're playing."
"It's not a big deal. Each to their own, as long as they don't interfere with each other!"
"But the wife seems way prettier than the mistress."
"That just shows that a man's infidelity has nothing to do with his wife's looks—that's just his nature!"
Helena was taken aback for a moment, her voice trembling as she said, "Laurel, things between Alex and I aren't what you think."
I looked at Helena and saw the tears glistening in her eyes, her expression one of restraint, making it seem like we had wronged her.
Clearly, her words carried a hidden meaning—when she spoke of Newton City being small, it seemed she was implying that there was something going on between me and Marvin.
Instead of explaining, Marvin only added fuel to the fire with his careless words.
I could not help but laugh.
I had not had time to deal with Helena the day before, but today she came right to me.
I knew that this woman was special to Alex, but if she kept trying to justify herself, then she might as well just take on the role of Alex's wife, so I did not have to waste my time dealing with a bunch of love-struck fools.
"Miss Cole, don't be anxious," I said with a sweet smile. "You took the place I was supposed to stay in and made me stay in a hotel, and you called my husband in the middle of the night to accompany you. I don't even mind, so why are you so worked up?"
Marvin furrowed his brow slightly and coldly looked at me. "Laurel, you were kidnapped yesterday and nearly killed at night.
"Your so-called husband sneaked off to be with another woman, then had the time to dine with her the next day, but you're not angry at all? Why not just divorce him? What's the point of torturing yourself like this?"
I agreed with a nod and glanced at Alex. "Whenever you have time, let's go get the divorce papers. The wedding hasn't been held yet, so it's not too late."
Before Alex could respond, I noticed a hint of panic in Helena's eyes.
Helena did not know that Rosemary had killed someone yesterday.
She had always been under Alex's protection, and even though the Cole family mistreated her, they could not have done much harm.
After all, the Harvey family and the Parks family were not people the Cole family could afford to offend.
If I were to divorce Alex because of Helena, no one would be fooled—they would see that I was just being used as a shield.
Though Helena wanted to replace me as Alex's wife, she knew that now was not the ideal time.
Besides, with the Herrera Group's stock plummeting, if the news of a divorce came out, Helena would surely find herself in serious trouble.
Even if Helena married Alex, it would not help her much. She would be kicked out of the Cole family and would not be accepted by the Herrera family. So how could she not be anxious?
I was only bold enough to act this way because I knew Alex would not divorce me at this time.
Keeping my anger inside would only leave me feeling stifled.
The doctor had told me to keep my spirits up for the sake of the baby.
"Laurel, I wasn't feeling well last night. Hector was worried about me, so he called Alex," Helena explained, but then broke into a fit of coughing, her face turning red from the force of it.
Alex gently patted Helena's back, worry evident in his eyes.
After a moment, Helena stopped coughing. She looked drained and sickly.
"Helena's health has never been good, Laurel," Alex said, frowning, his voice cold and distant.
I let out a cold laugh and quickly stood up to interrupt him.
The way Alex spoke, the look on his face—it reminded me so much of Austin. It was clear they were from the same family.
"Please don't tell me you think of her as a 'sister'." I shot a glance at Helena, irritated, then turned my eyes back to Alex. "I can't stand the word 'sister' the most."
Alex suddenly stiffened, and I could see a flicker of cold fury in his sharp eyes.
Oh? He wasn't angry a second ago, but now he's finally getting upset.
Sophina must have noticed the anger emanating from Alex. She gently tugged at my sleeve and whispered, "Don't be upset, Laurel. It's not good for your health."
I suddenly realized that my only aim was to get Helena to back off and stop appearing in front of me.
If she wanted to tie Alex down, let her. If she had the ability, she could become Alex's wife, I did not care for that position.
But as I was talking, I found myself getting angry.
I was pregnant, so I could not let my emotions get the best of me.
It seemed that Alex had heard Sophina's words, as the anger in his eyes seemed to subside a little.
Upon noticing that, I realized that Alex must have seen how pitiful I looked, and out of sympathy, he decided not to hold it against me.
Helena knew that Alex had a thing for the delicate and vulnerable, which was why she adopted that frail, sickly role.
Moreover, she had been keeping up that act for decades.
Looks like Helena is way more skilled than Rosemary. Not only can she read people like a book, but she's also incredibly patient. Otherwise, how else could she have Alex completely wrapped around her finger?
"Alex, please don't be mad at Laurel," Helena said softly, her eyes carrying a hint of grievance. "It's my fault. If not for me, Laurel wouldn't be this upset."
I watched Helena in silence. She was truly afraid—afraid that Alex might divorce me in a fit of anger.
She really did overestimate her importance to Alex.
If Alex really wanted to divorce me, he would not have let that 4 million dollars go to waste.
The money I transferred to him was returned, and he even sent me another 4 million dollars.
That only meant one thing—Alex had no intention of divorcing me.
And Alex knew I would not divorce him either, not when that kind of money was on the table.
Alex fixed his gaze on me, the sharpness in his expression softening slightly. "Laurel, you decide—do we sit here and eat, or do you come with us to the private room?"
As he finished speaking, he shot a meaningful glance at Marvin.
I rolled my eyes at Alex without hesitation, my voice laced with irritation. "Are you deliberately trying to stop me from eating?"
"You can't eat with me around?" Alex's lips curved into a faint smile.
"I don't like sitting with strangers." Marvin shot Alex a disdainful look.
"Funny, neither do I. But since you're Laurel's friend, I suppose I'll tolerate it," Alex said.
A dull throb pulsed at my temple—I had never seen Alex act so shamelessly.
Shouldn't he be furious and storming off with his mistress by now?
I cast a brief glance at Helena before shifting my gaze back to Alex. Letting out a long sigh, I said, "Then let me offer you two choices as well, Alex."
