"Two options?" Alex raised an eyebrow at me, clearly not expecting me to behave like this toward him.
I said, "If you're eating with me, that's okay. But I can't interact with others—I have a bit of a cleanliness disorder."
"You have a cleanliness disorder?" Alex smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes.
I nodded matter-of-factly. "I've been exposed to too much filth, which is why I've become like this."
After that, I glanced at Helena.
Helena still had that innocent, submissive look, but when I said this, she pursed her lips. Just as she seemed ready to speak, I interrupted her.
"Miss Cole, don't be in a rush to speak. I'm not done yet."
Raising an eyebrow, I stood up and looked at Sophina. "Let's go, Sophina. As for the rest of you, enjoy your meal."
It seemed Alex had not anticipated that I would rather leave than sit at the same table with them.
"Please don't be mad, Laurel. I'll... I'll go back by myself. You stay with Alex."
Helena quickly moved to block my path when she saw me about to leave, her voice tinged with a hint of fear.
I raised an eyebrow, smiling meaningfully at her.
Her face looked pale, and her makeup gave her a tired, worn-out appearance.
Every woman would make an effort to look her best when going out on a date.
But Helena had done the opposite—rather than looking radiant, she purposely made herself appear fragile and sickly.
She knew that the more vulnerable she seemed, the more Alex would feel sorry for her and take care of her.
Maybe because Helena had been waiting for too long, or maybe she could not stand the other women in Alex's life, which was why she was trying to prove something.
However, she was afraid now.
After all, Helena had been playing this sickly role for so long that she could not possibly give it up now.
I leaned in close to Helena and sneered. "We've both seen enough of the world, so spare me the pretenses. I'm not falling for it."
Then I glanced at Marvin, who was standing nearby, and teased, "So, are you planning to join them?"
Marvin quickly shook his head, a big smile spreading across his face. He swiftly took my bag from me, took a few steps forward, and looked back at Alex. "Don't forget to pick up the tab, Mr. Herrera."
After saying that, he secretly gave me a thumbs up.
Alex did not say anything to stop me. I had made my intentions clear, and he was not going to chase after me.
However, I could still feel his cold gaze fixed on me from behind.
When I walked out of the restaurant, I finally heaved a sigh of relief.
As soon as we got in the car, Marvin asked what we wanted to eat, but his phone suddenly rang.
Marvin answered the call and hung up less than a minute later. Seeing his serious expression, I quickly asked, "Is it Ivan who's in trouble, or Rosemary?"
Marvin glanced at me and frowned slightly. "Rosemary tried to take her own life less than 10 minutes after you left."
There was silence in the car. Sophina, who was sitting in the back seat, asked carefully, "Is... Is she dead?"
Marvin shook his head. "What did you say to her, Laurel? Did you tell her everything?"
"No." I chuckled. "She'll be fine. I merely showed her the video."
Marvin did not say anything. It seemed like he was deep in thought.
Sophina was a bit confused, her eyes darting between Marvin and me.
For a moment, she did not know what to say.
Sophina had been around Leah long enough to know when to stay silent and what questions were off-limits.
On the other hand, Marvin frowned slightly and looked at me.
"Laurel, are you trying to get Rosemary to go after Juliet? Aren't you worried that'll raise suspicions?" he asked.
I said nonchalantly, "The game's already in play. We'll have to lure them out if we want to find Yolanda."
Truthfully, I was just taking a gamble. Ivan must have found the video by accident.
The only person in the Hill family who was close to Rosemary was Juliet, so it made sense that Juliet was the one who recorded the video.
But what is her motive? Why would she record it?
Rosemary and Austin might have kept their affair hidden from the Herrera family, but Juliet, who was always around Rosemary, must have found out about it. She could very well be the one who uncovered their secret.
Maybe Rosemary let something slip by accident, which gave Juliet the upper hand over her.
Juliet probably did not expect that her video would end up in Ivan's hands.
Ivan had always shown a great deal of affection toward Juliet. Even though Juliet had gone to extreme lengths to gain the favor of the Hill family, she did not need to go to such extremes with Ivan.
Hence, it was clear the Hill family still had secrets that I did not know.
I wondered if it had to do with Austin's real father.
After learning that Austin was not Kayden's biological son, I had someone look into the people around Amanda, but nothing turned up.
However, I completely forgot to investigate the Hill family.
Amanda and Kayden's marriage was arranged, but Amanda fell for Kayden at first sight.
The problem was that Kayden did not feel the same. He did not like Amanda, neither her looks nor her personality.
When Kayden learned he had to marry Amanda after graduation, he ran away from home and allegedly sought refuge with his eldest brother, Andrew Herrera, who lived abroad.
However, Kayden was eventually caught and brought back by Aloysius.
Andrew had always been in poor health and lived abroad, reportedly running a small business.
Every year, the Herrera family would provide him with support, which was why Andrew did not dare to go against them.
Upon hearing that Kayden had come abroad to avoid his arranged marriage, Andrew immediately called the Herrera family and had Kayden brought back home.
For many years, Kayden harbored resentment toward the Herrera family, which was why the Herrera Group, which was originally meant to be passed on to him, was handed over to Alex instead.
At that time, full of youthful arrogance, Kayden believed love could solve everything.
Unexpectedly, the woman who had promised to elope with him waited until the Herrera family offered her 300 thousand dollars, then left him and went overseas.
300 thousand dollars was all it took to expose someone's true colors—it was actually a bargain.
In the three years following their marriage, Kayden and Amanda shared a roof, but their marriage remained unconsummated.
It was not until one night, when Kayden got drunk, that he and Amanda slept together, resulting in the birth of Austin.
Looking back, it was possible that the drunken incident was part of Amanda's plan.
After all, Austin was not of the Herrera family's bloodline.
Marvin's phone suddenly vibrated, and the glum look on his face lightened slightly. "Ivan has gone to look for the Herrera family," he said.
