I stood before the bright and dazzling fitting mirror of the bridal shop. I was wearing a gorgeous wedding dress, and the hem of the dress spread out like clouds on the floor.
"Wow, you're so beautiful. Laurel, you look like Cinderella after she met her Fairy Godmother. You're so beautiful that it makes one's heart flutter."
Sophina looked at me enviously. Meanwhile, my lips curled into a faint smile as I looked at myself in the mirror.
I had a perfect figure, face, and noble appearance. Even the salesperson beside me couldn't help but praise me. However, they did not know that under this perfect body was a heart riddled with holes. At that moment, the heart was empty. There was no joy.
Alex was sitting on the sofa not far away. His slender fingers were casually placed on the armrest, and his eyes wandered around the shop. I walked toward him with somewhat heavy steps, and the tails of my wedding dress rustled on the ground.
Sophina's eyes sparkled in awe. She clasped her hands and muttered, "Oh my god, it's so beautiful. She's like a princess from a fairy tale. She looks ready to get married."
I walked over to Alex and lifted my chin slightly, trying to observe the expression on his face. Even the slightest flicker would be good. However, he looked at me indifferently. His eyes were as calm as a lake's surface.
I felt as if my heart had been hammered, and the disappointment I had been suppressing quickly spread. I raised my eyebrows and looked at Alex. "Do I look good?"
Alex only smiled indifferently, which made me angry. His efforts were less than the bare minimum! He only nodded slightly. "Very nice."
I smiled awkwardly and looked at the clerk at the corner. I deliberately raised my voice, but kept it polite. "Could you please bring me the most expensive item in your shop?"
The clerk was slightly stunned. She approached me with a complicated look. "I'm sorry, Miss. The most expensive model in this shop doesn't have the size you're wearing. It needs to be reserved, and it might take a while."
Hearing her answer, my shoulders slumped. Disappointment flashed across my eyes, but it was fleeting.
"May I suggest other models that might suit you?" The clerk asked.
I hesitated briefly and shook my head in disappointment. "No need. I'll wear this one."
The store clerk didn't seem to think I'd only tried one and was ready to buy it. Her originally puzzled face immediately revealed a trace of joy as she hurriedly said, "Alright."
After changing out of the wedding dress, Alex left the clerk an address. He even hired the makeup artist for the wedding while I was changing.
When I left the changing room, Alex slowly stood up from the sofa with his hands in his pockets. "They will send the dress to the hotel on our wedding day."
I nodded and walked out of the shop without another word. I knew Alex did not want to hold the wedding so soon. Or rather, he did not want to hold the wedding while Helena was around. But I couldn't blame how he felt. It was unbearable to let the person he loved attend his wedding banquet.
However, Helena would probably refuse if he sent her away. Perhaps this was the reason why he called outside just now.
"Laurel, what's wrong? Why do you look so unhappy?" Sophina noticed my disappointment.
I raised my eyes and smiled slightly. "I'm not the one who's unhappy."
Sophina bit her lip and took my hand. She whispered, "Laurel, why do you think Alex is unhappy?"
"Maybe he didn't want to jump into commitment so soon."
Sophina frowned. "Aren't you both already married? He was already bound to a commitment. Does he regret it?"
I shrugged and followed Alex to the jewelry store. The lights in the shop were dazzling, and all kinds of jewelry emitted a charming glow under the light. Be it the design or the diamond, they were all charming, and no woman in the world who could resist the jewel's charm.
Alex casually looked at the display case and pointed at a big diamond ring. "Do you like this? If you do, we can choose this one." His tone was calming as a summer breeze.
I looked at the diamond ring with mixed feelings. I was about to refuse when all the rumors about my "money-loving persona" suddenly flashed through my mind. I immediately swallowed my words and whispered, "Okay."
Alex took the diamond ring box from the store clerk and turned to hand it to me. His eyes were still cold. Then, he took a bank card from his wallet and gave it to me. "Take a walk with Sophina. I'll send a driver to pick you up later."
I reached out and took his card. My fingers accidentally brushed his hand, which was as cold as a block of ice. Then, I opened my mouth to ask about the wedding reception. "So, about the wedding banquet, could..."
Before I could finish, Alex's phone suddenly rang. He glanced at his phone screen, and his eyes instantly became anxious. He hurriedly turned around and left, ignoring me. Looking at his figure getting further, I immediately sneered.
At that moment, Lawrence walked over. He wore a suit and had a warm smile. "Mr. Herrera has something urgent to attend to, so he asked me to come over," Lawrence said softly.
I ignored Lawrence and stood in silence. After a while, I told Sophina, "I'm going to the bathroom."
"I'll go with you."
"No need. Wait for me here." I stuffed the things in my hand into her hand and turned to walk to the nearby washroom.
The bathroom smelled faintly of perfume. I stood at the sink and stared at myself in the mirror, my eyes empty. I turned on the faucet and let the cold water wash over my fingers, trying to clear my head.
When I left the washroom, a hand suddenly covered my mouth from behind. My eyes widened in horror. I was about to struggle when a familiar voice spoke in my ear. "Don't make a sound. It's me." It was Ivan. He slowly let go.
I turned to look at him. His sudden appearance puzzled me. Ivan wore a black windbreaker. His hair was quite messy, and a hint of fatigue was visible in his eyes. "What are you doing here?" I asked, frowning.
