Everything was going according to my plan. When I woke up the next morning, photos of Helena and her mother, Jessica, had gone viral on all the major websites.
[Helena being an illegitimate child is one thing, but her mother faking her death? What kind of terrible deeds have they done?]
[Helena has been pretending to be sick for years, I have to admit, I'm impressed! I couldn't last a week in bed, let alone this long.]
[Both Helena and Jessica must be out of their minds. To go to such lengths to get into the Cole family, it's as if they think there's a throne to inherit!]
[Jessica faking her death was all to help Helena get into the Cole family. But isn't that a bit much?]
[What's the big deal? Just changing a name. Clearly, Jessica is the mastermind behind Helena's plot!]
[Jessica used to be a B-list, shameless actress. Who knows who Helena's real father is!]
[With a mother like that, how could her daughter turn out any better?]
As I read through the flood of insults and criticisms directed at Helena and Jessica in the comments, I felt a wave of satisfaction.
But this was still far from enough for me. The next part didn't require me to lift a finger.
Someone would handle it for me.
As the public outrage showed no sign of slowing down and with the heat reaching the top three trending topics in entertainment gossip, I knew that even if Alex tried to stop it, he wouldn't be able to cover it up anytime soon.
Even the photos from the hospital, showing Helena and Alex together, resurfaced and started trending again.
"Laurel, take a look at what's trending!" Sophina grinned excitedly. "Helena's mother, Jessica, is alive! This is crazy!"
Looking at Sophina, who seemed to be reveling in the drama, I smiled and said, "It's just another rich family feud. Why are you so worked up?"
Sophina beamed back at me, her face still radiating with joy.
"I guess that's what they call reaping what you sow," I said lightly, sipping on the oatmeal that Dorothy had freshly prepared this morning. It tasted quite good, so I asked her to serve me another bowl.
I slowly raised my head and looked out at the sunlight coming through the window. I took a deep breath, and the room was filled with a faint scent of sandalwood. In my mind, I couldn't help but picture Alex's cold yet beautiful face.
I turned to Nancy. "Where's Mr. Herrera?"
"He's been in a rush since early this morning, and didn't even have breakfast," Nancy said, a look of confusion in her eyes. "I'm not sure what happened. Should I call and check with him, Mrs. Herrera?"
"No need," I said calmly.
Given the situation, he must have been rushing off to find his beloved.
"Are you alright, Laurel?" Sophina's dark eyes were fixed on me, her lips pressed together, as though she wanted to say something but stopped herself.
She was obviously worried about me. It was clear to anyone that Alex's sudden rush was because he was going to find his true love.
I gave a casual smile. "Come with me to buy some flowers later. The house has this disgusting stench."
Dorothy stood still for a moment, sniffing the air with a puzzled expression.
On the other hand, Sophina nodded eagerly, getting up and walking toward the sunlight. She opened the window, letting in a fresh breeze that immediately made me feel at ease.
After breakfast, I went downstairs with Sophina. Lawrence took us to the flower market, where we picked out two beautiful bouquets of roses. After lunch at a restaurant, I couldn't help but let out a big yawn.
"Let's go back, Laurel. You should rest for a while," Sophina suggested.
"No rush." As soon as I finished speaking, my phone on the table rang.
Sophina tensed up when she saw it was Alex calling, her whole demeanor suddenly on edge, like she was preparing for a battle.
I slowly smirked, a trace of disdain crossing my face. "Looks like the timing is perfect..."
Sophina was slightly stunned.
When I left, I sent Alex's property registration details in Nifelheim City to Marvin.
I didn't need to say anything because I knew, with our mutual understanding, Marvin would know exactly what I wanted.
As expected, the reporters soon found Jessica and Helena secretly moved into Chapney Mansion.
Soon after, Abigail took her mother, Carolina, directly to Chapney Mansion to demand an explanation.
The entire incident was even caught on video.
However, before I could even open the video to enjoy the drama, I received a call from Alex.
There was no need to ask; it was clear he was calling to interrogate me.
I slowly pressed the answer button, and Alex's deep, restrained voice came through the phone. "Laurel, where are you?"
"I'm out. What's the matter?" I replied, my tone flat.
There was silence on the other end for a moment before Alex coldly asked, "Did you do it?"
I rubbed my forehead slowly, then asked casually, "Do what?"
"About Helena. Is it you who did it?" His voice was icy, and even though the phone separated us, I could feel the anger and hostility radiating from him.
Before I could speak, I heard the faint sound of sobbing on the line.
"Alex, please... don't fight with Laurel over this."
Hearing Helena's voice, I couldn't help but let out a sarcastic laugh.
She should have been furious by now, but in front of Alex, she still put on a facade of being wronged and pretending to be strong, even trying to comfort him.
I couldn't help but admire Helena for her Oscar-worthy performance!
At the same time, I found myself respecting Alex's magnanimity. Even though he had been deceived for so long, he wasn't angry, and instead, he had the time to interrogate me.
I smiled coldly. "If you think it's me, then it is. I don't want to argue with you. If you can't stand me, then divorce me."
There was arrogance and defiance in my tone. Perhaps this was my true nature.
"If you don't want others to know, then don't do it in the first place. Isn't it supposed to be a good thing that her mother came back from the dead?"
I paused for a moment and continued, "At least my mom didn't survive... I never even got to see her one last time."
There was a long silence on the other end. Then Alex spoke again, his voice a little softer, "Do you... do you know that Jessica's baby is gone?"
"Did I make her lose it?" I sneered.
"If you have evidence, come and arrest me. Don't come to me complaining about some worthless woman ruining my mood."
With that, I hung up and immediately blocked Alex's number.
Then, I quietly opened the video I hadn't watched earlier.
As expected, Carolina Cole had barged into Chapney Mansion with a group of people
Although the faces of Jessica and Helena were blurred in the footage, Jessica's stomach was clearly visible...
