I couldn't help but admire Jessica's tenacity. At nearly fifty, she managed to conceive a child.
In the video, Abigail barged into Chapney Mansion and immediately charged at Helena. It looked as though she wanted to tear her apart.
Abigail had never liked Helena, the illegitimate daughter. She had always endured it, afraid that she might accidentally kill her if she lashed out.
Now that she knew Helena wasn't really sick, and had been deceiving her for so many years, the situation was different. Even worse, Helena had concealed her plan with her mother to have another child to secure the family's fortune.
Anyone in Abigail's position would want to see Helena pay.
At first, Jessica had cautiously protected her stomach, but when she saw her daughter being beaten with no chance to fight back, she rushed forward without hesitation to intervene.
She thought her pregnancy would be her shield, protecting both of them. However, she didn't expect Abigail to be so out of control. Abigail shoved her hard, sending Jessica crashing to the ground with a thud.
The back of her head struck the floor with a muffled thud, and then came Jessica's heartbreaking screams.
The whole incident was being broadcast live, and viewers online were eager to vent their frustrations.
They cheered, and the comments section filled with messages of support for Abigail and Carolina. In their eyes, an illegitimate daughter and a woman with fraudulent intentions were unforgivable.
[Such a bitch. In ancient times, she would have been burned at the stake.]
[The older woman is a mistress who destroyed someone's family, and her daughter isn't any better.]
[Helena should be kicked out of Nifelheim City, she's nothing but shameful.]
[I heard the wife is pregnant, and Helena faked her illness to seduce a married man. It would be best if this fall made her miscarry the child she's carrying.]
[The child is innocent, but it seems like the baby is already several months along.]
[Hope you get cheated on too one day and that you can be as gracious as these people!]
Jessica was rushed to the hospital.
The livestream ended shortly after.
However, what I saw was a recorded version.
No matter whether Jessica's child survived or not, the outcome was inevitable. The child had no chance of survival.
Malcolm would never allow the child to be born. Of course, neither would the people from the Reynolds family.
Throughout the entire situation, Malcolm had never once shown his face. He knew very well that if he appeared in public, he would lose his comfortable life.
If the truth of his affair during his marriage were exposed, all his wealth would vanish. Even worse, he would face jail time for bigamy.
Without a son, there would always be opportunities to have another.
If he lost his wealth, he wouldn't know where to start in finding someone who could bear him a son again.
When Jessica was younger, she had perhaps relied on her looks to stay by Malcolm's side.
Fearing revenge from the Reynolds family, she carefully planned her fake death.
She thought as long as she gave birth to a son, she could gain status through him. Yet, she never expected that the truth would eventually come to light.
Malcolm didn't care about their lives in the slightest.
Helena had lost everything, and it was impossible for her not to feel a deep, burning rage.
The Cole family would likely never accept her again.
I didn't expect her to endure it so quietly. In front of Alex, she still wore a pitiful and humble expression.
After Alex called Lawrence, the three of us reluctantly started heading back.
I couldn't escape him forever; there was no running from the situation. I had been out for hours, and I was feeling a bit tired.
As soon as I entered the house, a tense atmosphere hit me.
I immediately spotted Alex and Helena sitting on the couch.
Helena seemed to sense something. She looked up slightly, and when our eyes met, her body suddenly stiffened.
A flash of panic crossed her face. The look on her face was as if I were a demon from hell, ready to devour her in an instant.
Her lips trembled as if she wanted to speak but was choked by fear.
Alex sat upright on the sofa, his expression serious.
He took a deep breath before speaking directly to me. "You need to go explain things to the media. Tell them that you arranged for Helena and her mother to stay in the mansion.
"All the previous misunderstandings should be cleared up. Helena is not the mistress in breaking up a family. I will not pursue any further matters from the past."
His cold voice echoed through the silent living room, carrying an unmistakable authority.
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but sneer. A mocking smile appeared on my lips.
"Sorry, I won't help you with that. If you want to deal with the past, go ahead. It doesn't matter to me."
I crossed my arms, my eyes filled with disdain, and I rejected him without hesitation.
As expected, Alex wanted me to help him clear up Helena's name.
It was laughable. She thought there would be no consequences for provoking me like this.
"How much do you want? I can give you anything," Alex said, standing up and walking toward me.
He leaned in, his voice low enough for only us to hear.
I hadn't expected Alex to offer me money, especially for the sake of Helena, who had continuously shown off in front of me.
"Feeling guilty now?" I raised an eyebrow, flashing a smile at Alex.
Alex let out a helpless sigh. "Name your price. How much do you want?"
I pretended to think for a moment before answering, "How about half of your net worth?"
"Are you... getting a bit too greedy?" Alex frowned and glared at me. His entire presence exuded a chilling, intimidating aura.
I shrugged nonchalantly, my expression calm. "Is half of your fortune really too much?"
Helena, who had been sitting on the couch, looked momentarily stunned. Her dark eyes quickly flickered with a hint of malice.
She bit her lip, forcing out a few tears, looking as pitiful as could be. Her appearance was in stark contrast to her earlier venomous expression.
"Alex, it's all my fault. Don't let this affect your relationship with Laurel..."
The words she was about to say lingered in her throat but were swallowed when she met my piercing gaze.
"Don't let this ruin your relationship," she said, trying her best to appear helpless.
I watched her put on a performance with such effort, and I really wanted to laugh. But looking at Alex Herrera's face, which was growing darker and darker, I could only hold myself back.
I let out a cold laugh and said, "Miss Cole, it seems you're not that important to him after all!"
At that moment, Helena's clenched hands betrayed her true emotions.
For a moment, she didn't know what to say. It was clear that she didn't want to admit how little she meant to Alex, but she also didn't want him giving up half of his wealth to me.
That was a considerable amount of money!
"I was just kidding. Don't take it seriously," I said with a smile, my lips curling up.
"After all, we're married. If we divorce, you'd have to give me half of your assets. What's yours is mine."
Helena froze, staring at me in disbelief. She clearly hadn't realized that Alex and I hadn't even signed a prenuptial agreement when we married.
Before Alex could react, I wiped the smile from my face and spoke in a clear, measured tone, "So, anything you've spent during our marriage, I also have the right to claim back!"
