"What do you mean by that?" Alex questioned coldly, his face alternating between fury and pallor.
I could tell he was truly angry, but there was nothing he could do about it.
Before we got married, he hadn't made me sign a prenuptial agreement because most of his assets were considered his private property.
However, he had overlooked one crucial detail. During our marriage, any savings under his name would be regarded as joint property.
As his legal wife, I had every right to claim my fair share of the property that rightfully belonged to me.
"You think I don't know how much you've spent on Helena since we got married?" I said coldly.
At my words, Helena's face turned deathly pale.
She trembled and grabbed Alex's arm. "Alex, I..."
Her delicate face was pale with panic, tears streaming down uncontrollably as if she had just been wronged.
She bit her lip, looking at Helena beside her, her expression filled with helplessness.
The truth was, Helena knew that if I just revealed the evidence I had, even if she wasn't a mistress, it would still prove that she was the third party.
And I could make her return all the money she'd spent.
She probably thought the photos I took at the hospital were the punishment she would have to face.
Little did she know, those were merely the appetizers. The real show had only just begun.
Now, she was trembling in fear. When she had tried so hard to provoke me in the past, she never once considered the consequences.
Initially, I saw Alex as a short-term safety net, someone to help me get by.
I was someone who knew my place. If they didn't provoke or threaten me, I could easily turn a blind eye to their actions.
But Helena was overestimating herself, trying to ruin my reputation with Rosemary's help.
And on our wedding night, she continued to emerge just to remind me of her presence.
She wanted me to lose my child as quickly as possible, which was why she repeatedly tried to provoke me.
Unfortunately for her, after I casually said a few things, she bought into it.
My pregnancy had been unstable during the first month, but after seeking treatment with an expert, I found out that my baby was developing just fine.
So, no matter how much they tried to provoke me, it wouldn't work.
Moreover, my health was special. I rarely fell ill.
Even when I had a fever, I didn't need medicine—it would go away within a day.
I even suspected that in my past life, I must have done something terrible, which was why I couldn't easily die.
It felt like I was meant to suffer in this life.
Perhaps only through enduring countless hardships could I finally be liberated.
"Laurel, what exactly are you trying to do?" Alex's voice suddenly turned harsh, his expression shifting from pale to flushed with fury.
"I've already explained it to you. Helena and I are not what you think."
I chuckled lightly, narrowing my eyes, but there was a chill in my voice.
"I believe you." I lifted my chin slightly, my gaze locking onto Alex's as I spoke slowly, "But I'm not the one who doesn't."
"The photos from the hospital were taken by your people, and this mess was caused by you. Is it really that hard to clear things up?" Alex's dark eyes stared at me as he fought to control his rage.
But I remained unhurried, glancing at Helena, who stood beside him.
She pressed her lips together, her brows furrowed. Tears rolled down her face, and her hands clung tightly to Alex's arm.
Anyone who saw them so close would think there was something between them.
Helena seemed to realize something was off and quickly withdrew her hands from Alex's arm, shrinking back slightly as she looked at me.
It seemed like she wanted to say something but swallowed her words the moment she met my gaze.
She had always played the role of the timid, helpless woman in front of Alex.
It was as if she had always been the pitiful one, in need of someone to take care of her in order to survive.
But in reality, Helena was far from innocent. She was ruthless, willing to go to any lengths to get what she wanted.
To stay in the Cole family and have Malcolm acknowledge her as his daughter, she had pretended to be ill for twenty years.
She even used her so-called condition to frame Abigail over and over again.
That was why Abigail never dared to lay a hand on her. No matter how much she despised Helena or wished she would disappear, she couldn't afford to take the risk.
Because murder meant prison.
A person who was willing to go to such extremes for themselves would be even more merciless to others.
Her mother still lay in the hospital, but Helena was more focused on clearing her name and getting back into the Cole family. That was the only reason she had reappeared before me.
She had always wanted to be Alex's woman—just not right now.
She knew that Herrera Group was in trouble. If she was exposed as Alex's mistress, she would always be the other woman.
She would never settle for that.
Moreover, the Cole family's reputation would be destroyed because of her.
Malcolm, to protect his name, would have no choice but to sever ties with his daughter.
And Alex was the heir to the Herrera Group. If his involvement with Helena cost him that position, all her schemes would have been for nothing.
Right now, all Helena wanted was to clear her name.
Once the day came that Alex and I divorced, she would finally have the chance to become the Herrera family's "Mrs. Herrera"—not just some mistress.
Alex was silent for a moment before speaking in a slow, deliberate tone. "I can give you fifty percent of Elysium Club's shares. It's a company under my name."
I was momentarily stunned. I hadn't expected Alex to go this far for Helena, to make such a sacrifice.
He was really that afraid of me exposing the evidence I had.
I let out a cold laugh. For a brief moment, a bitter feeling crept up inside me. But more than that, I felt jealous.
"Let me think about it."
Helena was completely frozen.
"Alex, there's no need for this," she said, her voice urgent.
Alex exhaled sharply, pressing his fingers against his temple as frustration tightened his expression. His face darkened once again. "What else do you want?"
Helena also turned to look at me, a flicker of disdain flashing in her eyes.
She didn't need to say it—I could already see it in her eyes. To her, I was nothing but greedy.
I found it laughable. It was ironic that a scheming trickster like her would ultimately fall into the hands of someone even more ruthless.
And when that day came, I wouldn't pity her in the slightest.
She only had herself to blame.
People like Helena and Austin were the same. In their world, only their own ambitions mattered.
Everyone else was expendable.
They would sacrifice anyone to get what they wanted.
"I almost forgot—do you still want me to pay back the 23 million dollars you gave me?" I said casually, narrowing my eyes.
Alex scoffed, his cold stare locking onto mine.
There was nothing for him to be surprised about. I had always been someone who cared about money.
"No need. Is that enough?" he said through gritted teeth.
"I'll think about it," I said with a soft chuckle, then let out a yawn.
Alex's expression turned even colder. "What else do you want? Just say it."
