Just as I was about to speak, Alex's phone suddenly rang.
There was no need to guess—I already knew it had to be someone from the Herrera family.
With everything that had happened, there was no way to keep this under wraps.
Alex glanced at the screen, his brows knitting together slightly before he turned and walked onto the balcony.
As soon as he left, Helena's expression shifted in an instant. The speed of her transformation was almost laughable.
The pitiful act from before was gone in an instant as she glared at me with cold malice. "Laurel, I'd advise you to stop pushing your luck. You saw it yourself—Alex is willing to sacrifice everything for me.
"People should know when to be satisfied. Otherwise, they'll only end up ruining themselves."
Her voice was icy, devoid of the fragile helplessness she had displayed moments ago. The way she looked at me was as if she wished she could tear me apart.
I didn't respond. I just watched her put on her little show, quietly amused.
So, she was distressed over Alex's money.
"You don't actually think Alex is refusing to divorce you because he still has feelings for you, do you? He just doesn't want to be seen as a man who abandoned his wife and child.
"I'd advise you to get rid of that thing in your stomach. It would be a shame if something were to happen to both of you."
Helena continued speaking arrogantly, "A woman like you, blinded by greed, doesn't deserve to be with him."
I chuckled, my voice light yet laced with mockery. "Oh? And you're not after his money? Then why don't you give back everything you've taken from him? Also, is this really how you beg someone for help?"
My voice wasn't loud, but it echoed through the living room.
Before I could react, Helena suddenly dropped to her knees right in front of me.
The unexpected sight made me pause, though inwardly, I was impressed. She truly was something else—I almost wanted to applaud her performance.
Hearing the commotion, Alex returned. His gaze swept over Helena kneeling on the floor before landing on me, his eyes sharp and filled with icy scrutiny.
Helena bit her lip, her voice delicate as she whispered, "Alex, I did this willingly."
I let out a light laugh and said mercilessly, "If you like kneeling so much, then stay there. You can get up once I feel better."
"Laurel, that's enough. Do you really think it's entertaining to be so aggressive?" Alex snapped.
I nodded seriously, my tone dripping with sarcasm. "Of course. Helena, it's a good thing you didn't go into acting. Otherwise, all the award-winning actresses would have to step aside for you."
With that, I chuckled and let out a lazy yawn. "Anyway, I'm tired. As for the 23 million you say I owe, I'll pay it back when Helena returns everything she's taken from you."
"Laurel, what do you mean?" Alex stared at me, his gaze dark and intense, a hint of anger in his voice.
"Nothing. I'm just saying I'm not doing you this favor."
I sneered and added casually, "Next time, do me a favor and don't bring anything unpleasant into my house. And one more thing—I've installed surveillance cameras in the house."
As soon as I said that, I saw Helena stiffen. It had been both a warning to her and a reminder to Alex—not to mess with me.
Alex helped Helena to her feet. He seemed furious, but instead of shouting, he let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Laurel, you really are something. I'm not asking for much—just stop causing trouble, okay?"
His softened tone caught me off guard. For some reason, a sharp pain shot through my chest. Maybe I had said too much, and it was exhausting.
"Fine. Just make sure Helena never appears in front of me again."
I yawned, then turned and walked back to my room.
I had no idea how much time had passed when Sophina and Dorothy returned.
Alex told Sophina to keep an eye on me and not let me take a single step outside.
Sophina looked at me, her face full of confusion. "What happened?"
I explained calmly, "He wanted me to help clear Helena's name, make sure no one thinks she's the mistress."
"You didn't agree, did you?" she asked anxiously.
I shook my head.
Sophina grabbed my hand, her expression filled with worry and frustration. "I really don't understand. Does he care about you, or does he care about Helena?
"You're pregnant, but instead of staying by your side, he's with her. I can't stand it," she fumed.
I rubbed my temples and chuckled helplessly. "That just means he hasn't given her enough money yet."
Back in my room, I sat by the window, staring out at the scenery. But my thoughts were tangled, chaotic.
I rested a hand on my slightly rounded belly, silently promising that no matter what, I would protect my child.
Night fell, casting shadows across the room.
Alex didn't come back, and I didn't ask where he was.
Most likely, he was sitting at Helena's mother's bedside, playing the role of the devoted fiancé.
If my mom were still alive to see the way Alex treated me, she would have never allowed us to be together.
Lying in bed, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
His face kept surfacing in my mind—the way he smiled, the way he was indifferent, the way he got angry. Each expression cut into me like a knife.
The next morning, sunlight peeked through the gaps in the curtains, casting a warm glow on my face.
I got up and walked out of my room to find Sophina standing in the living room.
She spotted me and hurried over. "Laurel, good morning. Breakfast is ready."
I gave a small nod and walked toward the dining table.
Sitting down, I realized I had little appetite. Just then, the doorbell rang.
Sophina went to answer it. A deliveryman stood at the door. "Is Ms. Parks here? This package is for you."
She took the package and handed it to me.
Frowning, I opened it. Inside were three photographs of my mother from when she was alive.
The moment I saw them, my face went pale. My grip on the pictures tightened, knuckles turning white from the pressure.
Noticing my reaction, Sophina asked with concern, "Laurel, what's wrong?"
I took a deep breath and handed her the photos. "Look at these."
Sophina took the photos, glanced at them, and frowned. "Laurel, when were these pictures taken?"
"When my mom had her accident. But the photos are dark. They must have been taken by accident." My hands trembled as I held them.
"Who's the other person in the last photo?" she asked in confusion.
In the image, someone stood in the corner, half-hidden in the shadows. My mom seemed to be talking to them.
The angle made it hard to see clearly. The person wore a black jacket and had short, medium-length hair.
It wasn't even clear if it was a man or a woman.
I shook my head, feeling lost.
The first photo showed my mother alone, as if she were searching for something.
In the second, she stood in front of a store, looking up at its sign. It was a pharmacy.
In the last picture, she stood at the entrance of an alley, talking to someone.
Hurriedly, I checked the package for a sender. There was none.
The next second, my vision went black, and I collapsed.
