"Laurel."
A familiar voice echoed beside me, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't open my eyes. It felt as if all the strength had been drained from my body, leaving me completely powerless.
Yet, I could still hear everything around me—the muffled sounds of sobbing, hurried footsteps, and angry shouting fading into the distance.
It was too noisy. The chaos made my head throb.
Then, everything fell into a deathly silence.
I drifted off again. I had no idea how long I slept, but gradually, my strength began to return.
When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.
Sophina was sitting at my bedside, not having left my side for even a moment.
I glanced at the clock and frowned slightly. My subconscious told me I had been out for a long time, but only three hours had passed.
"Laurel, you scared me to death." Sophina's eyes were red as she clutched my hand tightly.
"Why did I faint?" I looked at her in confusion.
"The doctor said you're anemic and malnourished."
I said nothing. Ever since I got pregnant, I had been eating more, but I was also throwing up just as much.
And lately, I hadn't had much of an appetite. Too many things had been weighing on my mind, making it hard to eat properly.
Seeing my worried expression, Sophina quickly reassured me. "Don't worry, the doctor said you just need to take better care of yourself. The baby is fine."
"The photos—where are they?" I asked urgently.
"I put them in my bag," she said, standing up.
Just then, someone pushed open the door and walked in.
I coughed lightly and looked up, seeing Bonnie stride in with a stern expression.
"What happened? Why did you suddenly collapse? Were you that upset?" Bonnie frowned, her voice laced with anger.
I massaged my throbbing temples and looked at Bonnie. "Aunt Bonnie, why are you here?"
She didn't answer right away. Instead, she pulled out a chair and sat down beside me.
Just then, Lawrence walked in with my medical report in hand.
"Where's Alex?" Bonnie's sharp eyes landed on Lawrence.
"Is he really that busy? His wife is in the hospital, and he doesn't even bother to show up? Did he even come home last night?"
Lawrence stood there, looking completely at a loss. He didn't know whether to step forward or retreat, and he certainly had no idea what to say. All he could do was lower his head in silence.
"Aunt Bonnie, how would Lawrence know where Alex went?" I reached out and tugged her sleeve, trying to calm her down.
"I'm fine, really."
"How can you be fine? I was on a business trip yesterday, and Maliyah told me she heard you two arguing in your room.
"He even brought someone home? I thought he treated you well, but clearly, your mother and I were blind. I won't stand for this!"
Bonnie's voice was firm as she held my hand. "I've already asked Javier and Maliyah to look for a new place. Once they find one, we'll move. I won't let you suffer even a little. If this marriage isn't working, end it now."
I knew she was speaking out of anger, mostly for Lawrence to hear.
There was no way I could get a divorce right after the wedding. People would gossip.
Besides, Bonnie understood the situation with the Herrera family. If news of a divorce spread now, it would only cause more trouble.
"Bonnie, I... I'm pregnant." I softened my tone, trying to explain. "I fainted because of anemia. It has nothing to do with Alex."
She froze, staring at me in shock. It took her a moment to process my words.
Then, instead of scolding me, she suddenly smiled. But as she smiled, tears slipped down her face.
She held my hand tightly and spoke each word carefully, "How far along are you? If your mom knew, she would be so happy. Laurel, this is a blessing."
"Just over two months. I had really bad morning sickness before, so I wasn't getting enough nutrients." I gave a reasonable explanation, part truth, part lie.
"If you're pregnant, then where is Alex?" Bonnie's gaze darkened as she turned to Lawrence.
"Did you call him? Shouldn't he come see his pregnant wife?"
"Mr. Herrera might be at the company. He didn't pick up the call," Lawrence said, his tone uncertain.
Bonnie shot a sharp glance at Lawrence before extending her hand toward me. "Give me your phone. I'll call him myself."
"Aunt Bonnie, I'm fine," I said softly.
She glanced at me, her face filled with disappointment.
Then she turned to Sophina. But before she could even ask, Sophina immediately handed over her phone.
Bonnie smirked slightly, a hint of approval flashing in her eyes.
I shot Sophina a look.
"Don't glare at her. I asked for it," Bonnie said as she picked up her phone and dialed Alex's number.
Standing behind her, Lawrence quickly said, "Ms. Porter, he might not answer an unknown number."
Sure enough, Alex didn't answer Bonnie's call.
Just as Bonnie was about to redial using Sophina's phone, Javier came rushing in, his face full of urgency.
"Mom, Maliyah got into a fight with someone."
I froze, completely stunned. Even Bonnie looked equally shocked.
Maliyah had always been timid, the type to endure rather than retaliate.
"What do you mean she got into a fight? You couldn't stop them?" Bonnie frowned at Javier.
Javier sighed helplessly. "It's a fight between two women. What was I supposed to do?"
"Who was she fighting with?"
"Helena."
At that, Sophina immediately asked, "Where? I'll go."
Before I could even react, everyone in the room had already rushed out, leaving only Lawrence and me staring at each other.
I let out a cold laugh, slowly lifting my head to look at him. "Aren't you going to call Alex and let him know?"
"There's no need. If he didn't answer earlier, it means he's in a meeting at the office," Lawrence replied.
I paused and then glanced at the bag in his hand. "What's that?"
"Dorothy made some oatmeal for you. She said you might like it." Lawrence quickly set the food container down in front of me.
As soon as he opened the lid, the savory aroma immediately stirred my appetite.
By the time I finished eating, Bonnie and the others still hadn't returned. I set my spoon down, thinking for a moment before saying, "Let's go take a look. Have they really not settled it yet?"
Lawrence remained silent.
I looked up at him and asked in a calm tone, "Who sent me to this hospital?"
The central hospital was closer to the city, yet I had been brought to the affiliated hospital instead. And somehow, Helena just happened to be here too.
Lawrence didn't answer. He cleared his throat, pretending he hadn't heard my question.
However, I already knew the answer.
