Love was something I should have never touched, especially when the object of my affection was someone like Alex.
I didn't know when I started liking him.
Maybe it was when he risked his life to save me, or perhaps it was during our wedding, when he gently slid the ring onto my finger and looked at me with such tenderness.
Or it could have been when Austin's family made things difficult for me, and he stood by me, defending me against their relentless torment.
I honestly didn't know. But I had to admit, when I saw him standing by Helena's side, gently protecting her, the sadness, pain, and jealousy in my heart were undeniable.
Thankfully, I hadn't fallen too deep.
It hadn't reached an irreversible point yet.
I comforted myself, thinking that maybe it was because so much had happened recently. When someone experiences a major emotional trauma, they often seek warmth and comfort.
And at that moment, Alex was the only person who could offer that to me.
So, I wasn't truly in love with him. It was simply that he appeared at the right moment when I was hurt.
What I was attracted to wasn't him as a person, but the things he provided—his handsome appearance, the warmth of his presence, and the comfort of wealth and status.
After all, I had never gotten these things from Austin. But with Alex, they came so easily.
That was probably why I unknowingly fell into it, step by step.
When someone was hungry, they tended to crave food without being picky, which was understandable.
What I liked wasn't Alex, but simply the person who showed up at that moment in my life.
If it had been someone else, I probably would have fallen just as deeply.
"I'll take you back," Alex said after a long silence.
I nodded silently.
He escorted me to the door of the hospital room, then said that he had something to handle at the company before turning to leave.
I knew exactly where he was going—he was going to see Helena.
Finally, when I gave in, this moment of celebration couldn't be delayed.
The sadness I felt was overwhelming, even more than I had expected.
"Laurel, didn't Mr. Herrera come back with you?" Sophina glanced behind me, but when she didn't see Alex, she asked.
I shook my head. "He had something to do, so he went out."
Sophina reached out and took my hand. As she did, the coat on my shoulder slipped off. By accident, I saw a lipstick mark on the inner lining, a glaring red spot in the direct light.
A sarcastic smile tugged at the corner of my lips.
Helena was really a fool. She was clearly destroying her own future.
Perhaps she never intended for me to help her in the first place. She must have wanted to prove herself in front of me once again.
Sophina's expression darkened as she picked up the coat from the floor. Her voice was filled with outrage. "I've seen shameless women, but none as shameless as this."
I smiled faintly, sitting on the bed.
Before I could even pull out my phone, a text from Alex came through.
He told me that there would be a press conference tomorrow morning, and that he would pick me up.
I turned slightly towards Sophina and spoke softly, "Sophina, could you call Dorothy and have her prepare a black suit from the back of my closet and a pair of black flat shoes by the door? Have Lawrence go pick them up. I need them for tomorrow."
Sophina paused, looking at me in confusion. Since I had gotten pregnant, I rarely wore skirts, and I hadn't worn high heels in ages.
"I'm going to attend the press conference tomorrow?"
Hearing my answer, Sophina's expression changed slightly.
She couldn't understand why I would help Helena.
"There's no evidence of them cheating, so she's not really a mistress." I smiled faintly. "I'm not helping her. I'm helping myself."
I was just leaving myself a backup plan.
Sooner or later, the divorce would happen. But I didn't want to become an enemy to Alex.
The enemy of my enemy was my friend.
Perhaps, one day, I would still need him for something.
"Laurel, you're just too soft-hearted," Sophina said, her eyes reddening as if she were about to cry.
I grabbed her hand and quickly explained, "Who said I was going to let Helena off the hook?"
She wanted to destroy herself, and I naturally had to help her.
After all, to ignore all her efforts would have been a waste.
The next day, the press conference took place at the Skyline Tower in the special press hall, a venue rarely used.
Only the biggest events were held here because it was spacious and part of the Herrera Group's new branch office.
The press conference was hosted by Alex's assistant, Bruno Aguilar.
As soon as major newspapers, magazines, and entertainment reporters received the news, they rushed to the venue.
Most of the people around knew the purpose of the press conference—Alex, the heir of Herrera Group, wanted to clear the name of the illegitimate daughter from the Cole family, Helena.
Clearing someone's name was not an easy task, and given the Herrera family's influence, the reporters were hesitant to make comments.
However, all eyes were fixed on Helena and me.
Watching us appear so harmonious, everyone was filled with curiosity.
I maintained a gentle smile throughout the entire event.
Bruno had briefed me beforehand about the questions that the reporters might ask, and even handed me a script. All I had to do was cooperate with the act.
The twenty media outlets present were likely selected by Alex himself.
When Helena was ready, the flashes from cameras went off, clicking away non-stop.
At that moment, Helena, sitting beside me, already looked somewhat exhausted. Under the harsh lights, her pale face appeared even more drained.
On the other hand, I looked radiant, my face glowing. I had slept well the night before.
However, what surprised me was that Alex didn't show up, which was unexpected.
Instead, behind Helena stood the staff and numerous security guards. Meanwhile, I had no one behind me.
Even Sophina hadn't been allowed to enter the venue. The reason given was that only company personnel were permitted.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the press conference will begin shortly. We will have a Q&A session afterward, so please don't rush," Bruno announced through the microphone before turning to look at Helena.
Helena took a deep breath and nodded.
"This press conference is primarily to clarify the malicious rumors about Ms. Cole spread by various online accounts. We have already taken legal action against these slanderous accounts."
Bruno paused for a moment before continuing. "As you all know, these false claims, including the accusation of Ms. Cole being a mistress, are baseless. After thorough investigation, all the allegations are pure fabrications. Now, we will have Ms. Cole personally address these rumors."
Helena looked somewhat flustered as she glanced at the reporters. There was no speech in front of her, just a phone in her hand.
"Hello, everyone. I'm Helena Cole. This is my first press conference, and I just want to clarify that my relationship with Alex, the CEO of Herrera Group, is nothing more than a friendship.
"Just because of a photo, people shouldn't assume I'm a mistress. I... I never intended to interfere in anyone's marriage, nor would I ever want to destroy something like that."
