I smiled and shook my head. "She'll agree. After all, the biggest threat is gone now."
Sophina was slightly stunned and asked in confusion, "Hasn't Carolina always disliked Helena? And this amount of money is not small! Also, Helena has been pretending to be sick, and Mr. Herrera gives her pocket money every month, but she doesn't go out. Where has all this money gone?"
"Daily expenses. Over the years, Jessica has been living under the radar, and most of the expenses probably came from Helena."
"I don't know what Mr. Herrera is thinking. Helena has been lying to him for so long, and he isn't angry at all; instead, he keeps defending her. I suspect Helena must have put some kind of spell on him," Sophina said, adjusting her black-framed glasses, her face showing displeasure.
Actually, regarding the relationship between Alex and Helena, I had Marvin look into it as well.
But there was nothing particularly special about it. According to Marvin, Helena was delicate and frail.
Men were always inclined to protect weak and helpless women.
It made sense, though, since Helena maintained her unique fragile image, she was very thin.
Standing at 5'5", she weighed barely 110 pounds.
But even so, her chest was full, her hips were curvy, and all the right places had filled out.
I even wondered if she had undergone some surgery because it just didn't make sense.
I thought that once her true nature was revealed, Alex would turn away, but to my surprise, he still stubbornly refused to change.
It seemed like nothing had changed between them.
He loved her too much.
"He just feels that Helena reminds him of himself when he was young," Lawrence said.
From Lawrence, I learned that when Alex was fifteen, he met the young Helena at a birthday party.
At that time, her health wasn't great, and no one wanted to play with her. They even called her a sickly child, a jinx, right in front of her.
Alex, feeling sorry for her, secretly gave her a piece of cake.
However, that night, when Helena returned home, she had a high fever that wouldn't go away. The doctor said she had an allergic reaction to the food and nearly died.
But Helena never told anyone that Alex had given her the cake.
Lawrence learned about this from Hector.
Hearing Lawrence's words, I suddenly thought of the scars on Alex's back.
"Did Alex get beaten a lot when he was young?" I asked absentmindedly.
Lawrence paused for a moment, his expression stiff, before answering, "He always wanted to leave the old house when he was young."
Given the way Lena treated Alex now, it was clear she must not have been kind to him when he was a child. Alex must have suffered a lot when he was younger.
That was probably why he had been so sensitive about living under someone else's roof.
In his eyes, Helena wasn't better off than he was; in fact, she was even more pitiful, more miserable.
She had lost her mother. And she had a stepmother and a father who turned a blind eye to her condition.
If it hadn't been for Alex hiring a doctor to visit Helena when he learned she was sick, she might have already been dead.
But she was wrong. Even without Alex, Helena wouldn't have died.
And Helena knew that as long as she didn't reveal who made her sick, Alex would owe her a favor.
That favor might come in handy in the future.
I didn't expect Helena, at such a young age, to be so calculating. It was true—children who have suffered often have resilient hearts.
Too bad, though, she misused her cleverness.
She had pretended to be weak for so many years, and now, at the critical moment, she couldn't keep it up.
But I could understand. After all, when something that should belong to her was taken by someone else, it hurt.
Unfortunately, she picked the wrong person to mess with.
That evening, Alex returned home, but Bonnie said she had to work late and wouldn't be back soon.
I had a vague feeling that Bonnie seemed to be avoiding me.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was heavy and lifeless, and finally, Maliyah put down her fork and furrowed her brows, looking at Alex, who was sitting next to me.
"Alex, we're planning to move next week. Helena doesn't have anywhere to stay, so we should let her have the house."
Her words made me freeze for a moment.
I couldn't help but wonder what this guy was playing at.
With his personality, he usually lets his fists do the talking and never tries to reason things out.
The only reason he had been holding back was not because he was afraid of Alex, but because he didn't want to put me in a difficult position.
Before Alex could say anything, Maliyah continued, "Sis, you're pregnant now, have you gone for a check-up? Didn't the doctor say you need to keep a happy mood? Maybe you should move back in with us. If you get some illness that shouldn't be there, it'll be harder to treat."
My heart tightened immediately. The earlier words might have been something Bonnie taught him, but the later ones were definitely his own.
The meaning was clear, "Alex, you don't have to come home every day, we'll make space for you to keep your mistress."
As for me moving out, it was because they feared I might catch some illness, implying that they disapproved of me not being able to maintain proper decorum.
When Maliyah heard Javier's second sentence, her face immediately turned pale, and she secretly glanced at Alex sitting next to me.
"These two houses are your sister's, no one else will be moving in," Alex said, picking up a cup of coffee and taking a small sip. He then looked at Maliyah gently, his tone calm.
It seemed like he didn't take Javier's words to heart.
I never expected Alex to give me the two houses. I wondered if it was it out of guilt, or maybe he had already prepared for a divorce and was afraid I'd take half of his wealth.
"The Cole family will take care of Helena," Alex said, then slowly raised his head, his deep eyes locking onto Javier's.
Javier met his gaze with a sideways glance.
I cleared my throat, "We don't talk during meals, let's eat."
Alex turned to look at me and smiled.
Maliyah gently tugged at Javier's sleeve, signaling him to stop while he still could.
I felt my heart skip a beat, fear creeping in.
I was worried they might just slam the table and start a fight.
The silence returned, and I quietly sighed in relief.
After dinner, I pulled Alex back to our room.
As soon as I closed the door, his deep voice came from behind me, "What are you afraid of?"
I turned around, meeting Alex's dark, bright eyes. I smiled and said, "I'm a bit of a clean freak. When you climb into my bed, you can't climb into anyone else's. I'm afraid of getting sick."
"Do you think I'm someone who sleeps around?" Alex's smile faded, and he fixed his cold gaze on me.
