Halfway through lunch, Alex received a call from Bruno. His expression instantly changed.
He suddenly snatched my fork and took my hand. There was a hint of anxiety in his tone. "Accompany me to the hospital."
I frowned and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Helena committed suicide and was sent to the hospital," he said.
I froze.
I sneered in my heart. I did not expect Helena would use her death to make Alex appear.
"You want to go?" I blinked and looked at Alex. "Then go. Why do you want me to go with you? Aren't you afraid that it will aggravate her condition?"
Alex didn't answer. He just stared at me coldly.
I felt guilty being stared at by her. Moreover, I knew that if Alex didn't appear, Helena might do something strange.
This woman was simply crazy. She knew that Alex had already abandoned her, and she had heard with her own ears that he would not get a divorce.
She called him but he didn't answer. She must be anxious.
Alex could naturally guess her thoughts, which was why he wanted me to go with him.
After a while, Alex said, "I'm not going. Go and see her for me."
With that, he took out a check for 10 million dollars from his pocket. "This is your hard work compensation."
I was dumbfounded. "Isn't that a little too much?"
Alex shook his head.
I had always been greedy for money. I took the check with a smile and called Sophina to go to the hospital with me.
Although the police had some doubts about the death of Jessica, they also felt that the death was too strange and were prepared to file a case for investigation.
As for her body, it was naturally returned to the family.
When Helena called me, I knew that she wanted to use the funeral as a reason for Alex to accompany her.
Unfortunately, Jessica died at the wrong time. Tomorrow, Alex had already accepted the Parks family's invitation to attend Austin and Kailyn's engagement party.
Naturally, he could not go to Helena's mother's funeral.
The day before Jessica was buried, Helena did this not only because she wanted Alex to appear, but also because she wanted to make things difficult for Malcolm.
"Get out of the car and put on your mask and hat. Park the car at the back door of the hospital," I said to Lawrence.
Sophina looked at me blankly. "Laurel, why should we be fully armed?"
"There might be reporters," I told her.
"Reporter?" Sophina's eyes lit up. "How do reporters know about Helena's suicide?"
"I didn't notify them."
Sophina immediately came to a conclusion. "I know, it must be Helena who notified the reporters. She probably wanted someone to capture a picture of Mr. Herrera with her again. But haven't they already found the man from the photo? Why is she still clinging to Mr. Herrera?"
I reached out and gently patted Sophina's shoulder. "Do you know who the male lead is?"
"Adrian, the Reynolds family's second son. It's already not bad for Helena to be able to marry Adrian." Sophina pursed her lips. "If I were a man, I wouldn't want such a fickle woman."
"You're right, but more importantly, Adrian is Carolina's nephew." I looked at Sophina as I spoke.
"Then will Helena have a good life after marrying into the Reynolds family?" Sophina asked, looking puzzled. "Hasn't Carolina and her daughter always disliked Helena? How could they agree to this marriage?"
I smiled. "Why would they disagree? It's be better if Helena is under their control."
Sophina immediately looked enlightened. "I get it now. Carolina had Helena marry Adrian Reynolds, and now she can control her however she wants. Revenge is best served cold, no wonder Helena tried to kill herself. She probably thought it was because Mr. Herrera ignored her, so she cried, threw a tantrum, and even tried to hang herself."
"She had her own reasons for killing herself." I saw Sophina staring at me in confusion. "You'll understand in a minute," I said as we got out of the car.
We walked into the hospital and went straight to the ward where Helena was.
As expected, there were many reporters standing outside the hospital.
They were waiting for the opportunity. After all, Jessica's funeral was tomorrow.
Helena, as long as she was still breathing, she would definitely be discharged today.
I learned that she had taken a bottle of sleeping pills in her room and attempted to slit her wrists. Fortunately, the servant who was taking care of her found her in time and rushed her to the hospital.
Luckily, she was brought in quickly, so her life was not in danger.
"I think she clearly doesn't want to die. If she really wanted to, she could have just jumped off a building," Sophina murmured.
I chuckled softly. If Sophina could see through Helena's little scheme, then how could others not understand?
She was clearly trying to use retreat as a tactic.
By feigning weakness, loneliness, and hopelessness in life, she was trying to create a picture of someone tragically sick in spirit. Maybe the Reynolds family wouldn't approve of the marriage anymore—after all, who would want a woman who's always threatening to kill herself in the family?
It would be bad luck if she actually died.
And there was another thing: she could use her supposed suffering to gain sympathy in front of Alex. Her physical illness might be gone, but the mental scars still lingered.
This way, she could keep clinging to Alex, confident that someone would never abandon her if she ever had another breakdown.
Unfortunately, my appearance shattered all of Helena's illusions.
When Helena opened her eyes and saw me, her face was filled with shock. "You... Why are you here?"
"Is it strange for me to be here?" I stared at Helena coldly. "Are you afraid that I will harm you?"
A look of disgust flashed across Helena's eyes. She looked around and realized that there was no one else in the ward except the two of us.
She glared at me viciously, as if she could no longer be bothered to continue pretending in front of me.
"Where's Alex? It must be that you forbade him from coming, right?" Helena's dark eyes glinted with hatred. "Why do you always have to keep Alex to yourself? I don't mind your existence, so what makes you so special?"
I couldn't help but laugh. "First, I came here because Alex asked me to. That means he doesn't want to see you and certainly doesn't want anything to do with you. And as for the second thing, if you want to die, just fucking die somewhere far away. Don't come around here pretending to be a saint while acting like a bitch."
Helena didn't expect me to insult her with such harsh words.
If it weren't for the fact that it was inconvenient to be in the hospital, I would have beaten her up.
"Miss Parks, how did I offend you? If I did, then I apologize to you. I... I didn't do it on purpose."
"I know one of your secrets. Want to hear it?" I narrowed my eyes and moved closer to Helena.
She subconsciously flinched, a hint of panic in her eyes.
