I turned around expressionlessly and looked at Alex. "Actually, you knew all along that Helena wouldn't die, didn't you?"
Alex didn't respond, but a flash of surprise flickered in his bright eyes.
I should have realized it much earlier. Alex kept indulging Helena's lies. Perhaps he had known all along that she had been deceiving him.
After seeing the exposed photos, I was certain of one thing: Alex had no romantic feelings for Helena at all.
Perhaps he had always treated her as a younger person, and had simply honored the promises he made when they were younger.
Over time, in Alex's mind, Helena was no different from his family.
Maybe he didn't love anyone at all, and that's why he chose to marry me.
Maybe that's also why he was so upset when I brought up the idea of divorce.
For someone like Alex, trying to find a woman who truly understood him, who wouldn't betray him, wasn't easy.
His life was surrounded by too much danger and uncertainty.
Alex was a thoughtful person, never one to act impulsively when it came to major decisions like marriage.
Unfortunately, it was only now that I fully understood the man standing before me, and it seemed he was even more terrifying than I had imagined.
"Tomorrow, we're heading to Wadiff City. Get some rest tonight," Alex said, releasing my hand. A sly smile danced in his dark eyes, and my heart skipped a beat, pounding in my chest.
"Mm," I replied, turning and walking calmly into the room.
Once inside, I exhaled deeply, pressing my fingers to my throbbing temples. The uneasy feeling inside me seemed to ease just a little.
After finishing the milk, I tried to calm myself and lay back onto the soft bed. Suddenly, my phone on the nightstand lit up, and a strange chill ran down my spine. Frowning, I reached over to grab it.
"Don't go to Wadiff City. It's dangerous!"
When I saw who had sent the message, I felt a sudden, inexplicable coldness creeping along my back.
It was a message from Rosemary, the deceased.
I let out a soft laugh. Anyone else would have been terrified by such a message, but not me.
I was the kind of person who wasn't easily frightened.
In my mind, the living were often far more terrifying than the dead.
When I saw the word "danger," a strange curiosity stirred within me.
It seemed that someone already knew about my identity.
Someone had sent me photos from before my mother's accident, and now someone was sending me strange messages.
All of this seemed to be pushing me to stay in Nifelheim City.
This only made me more certain that my mother's death had something to do with the Parks family.
I replied to the message, asking who it was, but got no response.
When I called Rosemary's number, I discovered that it was now a disconnected line.
At this point, I was sure that Rosemary's WhatsApp account was being accessed by someone else.
The only people who could crack her WhatsApp secrets were either those who were closest to her or the person who had her phone.
And this person knew me.
I thought about it for a long time, but couldn't find anyone who fit the profile.
Feeling a headache coming on, I decided to let it go.
The next morning, I woke up just before seven, jolted awake by a nightmare.
In my dream, Rosemary was standing at the edge of my bed, covered in blood.
She reached out, tightening her hands around my neck until I could barely breathe. I jerked awake, sitting upright in bed, my heart pounding wildly.
My back was drenched in sweat, and beads of perspiration dotted my forehead.
After freshening up, I stepped out of the room, only to find Javier standing by the door, looking like he had something to say but hesitated.
I quickly walked over to him and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Laurel, my mom wants you to come over," he said.
.I froze for a moment, expecting Aunt Bonnie to avoid me for a while, but it seemed she had taken the initiative to call for me.
"Okay," I replied, walking toward the door. Without thinking, I glanced toward the living room but didn't see Alex anywhere.
Dorothy smiled at me gently and said softly, "Mr. Herrera went downstairs to buy sandwich. He's been out for a while."
I paused, a hint of surprise crossing my face.
Yesterday, I had just mentioned it casually, yet he had gone and bought them himself.
A sense of unease crept over me.
That was definitely not a good sign.
I curled my lip in frustration before following Javier to the opposite room.
Bonnie sat quietly on the sofa, and when she saw me, she reached out to take my hand and guided me to sit beside her. She sighed softly. "Have you two reconciled?"
I gave a bitter smile. There was no "reconcile" for me.
It was never up to me.
I had married Alex for money. There was nothing pure about my intentions. Falling in love with him was my fault.
To correct that mistake, I had already decided to leave.
But I was naive, thinking that a quick marriage and divorce was just another normal thing.
After all, what I couldn't tolerate was loving someone whose heart belonged to another woman.
If I could have tolerated it, I wouldn't have broken up with Austin after six years of being together.
Every argument and disappointment had drained too much energy from me.
I had never expected to find myself trapped in a sugar-coated trap wrapped in money. Now, trying to get out wasn't as hard as it seemed.
Cutting my losses at any stage is never too late for any woman. Life goes on, and I still had expectations for my future.
Besides, we hadn't even been married for half a year. There was nothing to feel regretful about.
"I heard you said you were getting a divorce from Alex in front of the media?" Bonnie asked.
"Yes." To be honest, I really did want the divorce. I wasn't just threatening him.
Bonnie sighed deeply, looking at me with concern. "Don't threaten with divorce every time you argue. It hurts feelings"
'Feelings? What feelings did Alex and I have? At most, it was just my one-sided affection. I had deluded myself.'
"Aunt Bonnie, the person Alex wants to protect isn't just me."
'Laurel, the reason your mom and I agreed to your marriage to Alex wasn't just because of his promises, but because he really cares about you." Bonnie's face darkened. "He's better than Austin, in every aspect."
I froze for a moment, surprise filling my eyes.
I couldn't help but feel confused. I thought my mom and Aunt Bonnie already accept Austin. My mom even wanted me to marry him.'
"Aunt Bonnie, did you never like Austin? Then why did you agree to let me go back to Newton City with him and allow me to marry him?" I asked.
