Alex Herrera and I headed straight to Wadiff City. We both knew there was no real reason to bring Sophina along for just a two-day stay, especially with the possibility of danger along the way.
Before we arrived in Wadiff City, I tried to take a nap, but the flight was too long, and the exhaustion took over. Alex, sitting next to me, didn't disturb me.
By the time we landed, I'd slept for too long, and I couldn't keep pretending anymore. My eyes fluttered open, the long nap making it hard to shake off the drowsiness.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Alex glanced at me indifferently. His voice was cold, and there was no emotion on his face.
I shook my head, but only I knew the truth—after we got off the plane, I felt an unsettling sense of unease. It was as if the moment we stepped out of the airport, I could feel a pair of eyes watching us intently.
"There's a car following us." I looked up at that exquisite and handsome face.
Alex looked surprised. He slowly reached out and touched my head. A faint smile appeared in his deep eyes. "Don't be afraid. They're sent to protect us."
I gave him a disdainful glance, feeling like he was petting me like a stray cat.
"Your people?" I tilted my head, looking at Alex.
He withdrew his hand and nodded silently, meeting my gaze. "Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to you."
Hearing his words, I froze for a moment. "You mean... the assassins are here?"
Alex withdrew his gaze from me and spoke slowly, "The assassins couldn't possibly be just that one woman. They didn't complete the mission, and one of them is dead. They won't be getting paid."
My heart skipped a beat.
So, the only way the assassins would stop was if the target was eliminated.
But something didn't sit right with me. 'Why didn't the killers strike in Nifelheim City where they had more opportunities? Alex still had injuries on him. Why didn't they attack there, but instead came all the way to Wadiff City?'
The answer was clear to me now. After leaving Newton City, the assassins came to Wadiff City.
And the reason they were able to operate so safely here was obvious.
No one else but the Parks family had the audacity to kill in Wadiff City.
I thought for a while and looked up at Alex uneasily. "Did someone close to you try to kill you?" I lowered my voice and looked at Alex.
He remained silent, as if he already knew who was trying to kill him.
"Don't be afraid. If they're going to make a move, they'll wait until the engagement party is over. I'll arrange for you to leave first," he said, then added, "The driver will take you straight to the airport. Once you're on the plane, they won't be able to do anything to you."
"So, are you trying to make me a widow?" I blinked and looked at Alex. There was a hint of excitement in my voice.
Alex gave me a nonchalant glance and asked casually, "You don't want to stay with me anymore anyway."
'But I don't want to be a widow either.' I didn't say anything but rolled my eyes at him.
I knew very well that it was useless to say anything now. Alex would not change his decision easily.
Back at the hotel.
I lay on the bed. I had been on the plane for a few hours. My body was exhausted, but I couldn't stop thinking about Alex's words.
Alex didn't go directly back to the hotel. Instead, he made up an excuse to leave.
However, he arranged for two burly bodyguards to be stationed at the door.
In truth, I understood. He wasn't entirely sure that the killers would strike after the engagement party.
He was probably planning to be the bait himself.
I sat up straight and immediately pulled out my other phone.
"The plan was brought forward."
In less than three seconds, I received a text.
"Okay."
I deleted the message and let out a long sigh of relief.
I immediately took out my phone and mentioned Kailyn in the WhatsApp group for the trust-fund kids: "Ms. Shepherd, is everything ready?"
I also sent a GIF of me reaching out, asking for something, and then posted the hotel address on social media.
5 million dollars was a lot to me.
And honestly, I just wanted to test if she really want to marry Austin that badly.
'If something really happened to Alex, would Kayden be the one to inherit the Herrera Group? Then how could Austin possibly marry into the Parks family? Could it be that everything was part of their plan all along? With Kayden's suspicious nature, there's no way he would easily trust Maddox.'
I thought and thought, and eventually, I fell asleep.
My phone rang and I was jolted awake from my dream.
As soon as I saw the incoming call, every cell in my body tensed up involuntarily.
There was also a knock on the door outside. "Miss Parks, there is a Mr. Parks looking for you. Do you wish to meet him?"
I didn't open the door but answered the phone call from Isaac.
Before I could speak, the man's pleasant voice came through the receiver, "Miss Parks, would you be interested in going downstairs for a juice?"
"Okay, I'll get ready and be down soon."
"See you then." With that, Isaac hung up the phone.
I washed my face and looked at myself in the mirror, whispering, "The game has just begun. Stay strong, don't be afraid, don't back down."
Taking a deep breath, I turned around, grabbed my handbag, and headed downstairs.
Taking a deep breath, I turned around, grabbed my handbag, and headed downstairs.
"Long time no see." When Isaac saw me, he moved the chair for me like a gentleman.
I smiled faintly, but my hands tightened around my bag.
There were so many questions I wanted to ask the man in front of me—questions about the death of Angela.
But I knew that even if Isaac knew the answers, he would never tell me.
After all, he was from the Parks family, and moreover, he might not even consider me his sister.
Perhaps he had never known who his biological mother really was.
When my mother married Maddox, the Parks family didn't approve, so very few people knew about their wedding.
As a result, everyone assumed that Melody was Maddox's first wife, unaware that Maddox actually had a wife,Yvette, who was from a lower social class. He had pursued her for two years before finally winning her over.
"This check is from Kailyn. She asked me to give it to you," Isaac said, his lips curling into a gentle smile. "From now on, Kailyn will have to call you 'aunt.'"
I narrowed my eyes and sighed softly. Slowly, I spoke, "Mr. Parks, are you sure your sister wants to marry Austin?"
Isaac glanced at me before nonchalantly picking up his cup and taking a small sip. "When my father makes a decision, no one can refuse. And as for Kailyn and Austin, their relationship seems quite good."
Without hesitation, I took the check Isaac had brought for me. After a brief pause, I said, "If their relationship is good, then that's great. I have a bit of a temper, and I tend to settle scores."
