The engagement banquet went quite smoothly. Just as the banquet was about to end, Queenie suddenly walked up to me. "Miss Parks, Kailyn said she wants to see you. I wonder if it's convenient for you to go over?"
When I saw Queenie staring at me with fake smiles, I smiled and nodded.
Wanda, who was sitting beside me, reached out her small hand and tugged at the corner of my shirt. She said in a childish voice, "Laura, don't run around. Uncle will be anxious if he can't find you."
I reached out and pinched her little face, fully aware that it must have been Linda who told her to say that.
Although Maddox did not acknowledge my identity, the public opinion online and what Willow said in public must have made many people present curious about my identity.
Now, with Kailyn specifically calling me over, Linda was undoubtedly worried that something unfavorable might happen to me.
After all, this was the Parks family's territory, and the person who wanted to see me might not necessarily be Kailyn.
"I'll be back soon."
Wanda pouted and said seriously, "Okay... I'll wait for you here."
I smiled and nodded, feeling a warmth in my heart as I looked at the little girl's worried expression.
Then, I turned and followed Queenie out of the banquet hall.
As I stepped into a private room, I saw Kailyn touching up her makeup.
She was dressed in a custom high-end gown, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication with every movement.
I took a deep breath and walked forward with a calm expression. "Are you looking for me?"
Kailyn said with a smile, "Laurel, should I regard you as an aunt or sister?"
I was slightly stunned as I looked at the arrogant woman in front of me.
She had been pampered by her family since she was young. She was willful and arrogant, and she bullied others openly because she was the eldest daughter of the Parks family. No one dared to ignore her existence.
Even Samantha always put on a pleasant demeanor when facing her.
Someone as proud as she was would never be willing to marry Austin, let alone acknowledge me as her half-sister.
Kailyn looked at me with a smile, her beautiful eyes revealing the familiar sarcasm and contempt.
I didn't answer her question. I just stared at her in silence.
She retracted the smile on her lips and looked at me coldly. "Laurel, are you really my father's daughter?"
I still didn't respond, my eyes remaining cold as I stared at her.
She suddenly sneered and glared at me before continuing, "Don't think that my father will acknowledge you just because you're married to Alex. If he wanted to acknowledge you, he would have done so earlier."
She cast me another provocative glance and sneered, "You stole Alex, and now you want to steal my father and my brother too?"
"Is that all you wanted to say to me?" I frowned slightly, my gaze fixed on Kailyn as I spoke in a calm tone. "I thought you'd bring up Rosemary's death instead."
The moment my words fell, a flicker of panic flashed through Kailyn's eyes. But she quickly masked it with a cold laugh, her once-bright gaze turning icy. "Rosemary? She's already dead. What does it have to do with me?"
"Nothing at all?"
Kailyn's expression changed and her voice rose. "Laurel, you really don't have any self-awareness. Do you really think that the Herrera family likes you? Do you think that being my father's daughter gives you the right to stand by Alex's side?"
I shook my head helplessly and sneered. "Kailyn, you're already engaged to Austin. Do you think you can still marry Alex? Or is the engagement just a temporary measure? If Austin finds out that you only got engaged to him as a backup plan for Alex, wouldn't he be heartbroken?"
Before I could continue, Kailyn cut me off coldly, her gaze icy. "Laurel, between the rightful heir and you, who do you think Alex would choose?"
She stepped closer, her voice laced with cruelty. "Let me tell you. Whether you return to the Parks family or not, I will drive you out just the same. Just like my mother drove your mother out years ago, you'll be nothing, forced to live in the shadows, always hiding and never truly belonging."
She went on, "By the way, I heard that your mother is dead, right? What would she do if she knew that you wanted to recognize your biological father for money?"
My entire body tensed. It turned out that Kailyn knew about my mother and everything that had happened to her.
Then what about Isaac? How much did he know? If he knew everything, had he never tried to look for my mother all these years?
My heart tightened as if someone had stepped on it.
"Kailyn, I never thought of returning to the Parks family, but now I do," I said coldly with a sneer. "I will snatch everything that belongs to me, and let your mother pay for what she did in the past."
When Kailyn heard what I said, she chuckled with a hint of arrogance.
"Laurel, are you crazy? What do you think the Parks family is?" She frowned at me and gritted her teeth. "Don't overestimate yourself. I advise you to disappear from Alex's side while you still can. Otherwise..."
She trailed off, a sly smile tugging at her lips.
I let out a soft sigh, completely unfazed by Kailyn's threatening tone. I leaned close to her ear and said, "Otherwise what? After you killed Rosemary, are you planning to do the same to me?"
Kailyn subconsciously took two steps back and glared at me fiercely. Her beautiful eyes blinked in panic.
"Laurel, stop talking nonsense!" she snapped.
I was indeed spouting nonsense, but from Kailyn's angry and frightened eyes, I was certain of one thing. Kailyn and Rosemary's deaths were definitely related.
I tilted my head slightly, watching her intently. "Has Rosemary not come to visit you? You made her a promise. How could you go back on your word?"
"I never promised her anything!" Kailyn stammered, her voice losing its usual confidence. "You... you're just trying to scare me."
"Do you really think I don't know?" I raised my eyebrows and looked at Kailyn with a smile. "You killed Rosemary and now you want to kill Alex? Why do you want to destroy what you can't get?"
"What are you talking about? I never thought of harming Alex."
I let out a soft chuckle. "Really? But he almost got crushed by that falling light."
Kailyn was stunned for a moment, as if she had thought of something. After a moment of silence, she came back to his senses. "No, it wasn't me!"
I sighed and lifted a hand to massage my temple, feeling a dull ache creeping in. "If it wasn't you, who else could it be?"
I stared at Kailyn expressionlessly. At this moment, the panic on her delicate face had long disappeared. She stared at me with a faint smile. "Perhaps the person they want to kill isn't Alex, but you? Laurel, don't you know who you offended?"
