Hearing Kailyn's words, I was stunned for a moment. However, the image of the woman wearing a fox mask instantly appeared in my mind.
A shiver ran through my body. Though I could no longer recall her exact features, I could still remember the shock and desperate will to live in her eyes just before she died.
She wasn't killed by me, but she died right in front of me.
The perverted ghost would definitely avenge her, but his personality was impulsive, irritable, and a little stupid.
Therefore, he wouldn't use such a brain-consuming method to kill me and Alex.
"Who would dare to cause trouble at the Parks family's engagement banquet?" I stared at Kailyn with a deep gaze.
In other words, apart from the Parks family themselves, no one would have the guts to crash the event.
A flicker of doubt crossed Kailyn's eyes. "So, you're only thinking about returning to the Parks family and acknowledging your father because you've offended someone you shouldn't have?"
I frowned, not understanding her meaning.
Kailyn suddenly grabbed my arm tightly and looked sad. "Laura, I know I was too willful before, that I was immature. From now on, let's get along well. I promise I won't make you angry again. Please, don't be mad at Dad. He... he never even knew about your existence."
Seeing Kailyn's expression change instantly, I smiled disdainfully and shook her off.
Kailyn staggered back two steps, her body hitting the corner of the wall. A pained expression instantly appeared on her beautiful face.
"Laurel, what are you doing?" Austin shouted, rushing in from the doorway the moment he saw Kailyn hit her elbow against the table.
My expression instantly darkened, and I locked my cold, piercing gaze onto Austin. I spoke in a calm yet icy tone, "Shouldn't you be asking your fiancée what exactly she's trying to do? Did she call me here just to put on this little act?"
"Austin, it's my fault..."
Kailyn's voice was filled with grievance, her eyes reddening. She held onto Austin's arm tightly, as if afraid he would attack me, her gaze full of worry and restraint.
I was stunned for a moment. I didn't expect all the socialites I met to be drama queens.
Austin frowned slightly and looked at me with a complicated gaze. He seemed to realize that my current identity was no longer that of a woman from a small family, yet his eyes still carried disdain and contempt.
"Laurel, Kailyn wants to know if you're really her sister. What's your attitude?"
"I've never thought of acknowledging her as my sister." I fixed my cold gaze on Kailyn, then lowered my face slightly before curling my lips into a smirk. A flicker of contempt flashed in my eyes as I retorted, "Austin, have you forgotten? I am your aunt-in-law. Even though you've married into the Parks family, did the Herrera family's teachings amount to nothing?"
"Or do you think that now that you have someone backing you up, you no longer need to respect me or my husband?" I fixed my gaze on Austin.
"You..." Austin glared at me, but he couldn't say anything.
He had always had a strong sense of self-esteem.
To be honest, I never expected him to actually marry into the Parks family.
Thinking of how he had treated my mother in the past, a surge of anger flared up in my chest.
I hadn't settled the score with him yet, but he still had the cheek to jump around in front of me.
"Why didn't you invite your former classmates to your engagement banquet today? Are you embarrassed?" I continued.
Austin's expression grew darker and darker. Back in college, he was someone who cared deeply about his reputation. Thinking about it now, the reason he went to such lengths to pursue me was probably because I was the campus belle and had excellent grades.
Being able to woo me should have been something worth bragging about.
Yet, I foolishly believed that he had truly put in effort and genuinely cared for me through all the little details in life.
I was even deeply moved when he said we would get married after graduation.
But I didn't realize that some people's promises were utterly worthless.
People could change. Or perhaps he had never changed and was just deliberately putting on an act with me.
Otherwise, he could not have effortlessly balanced between me and Rosemary.
"Laura, you've misunderstood. Dad can't bear to leave me, so Austin came to our family," Kailyn quickly explained.
"Kailyn, I never acknowledged you as my sister. And what do you mean by our family? I remember you saying before that even if I entered the Parks family, you would still kick me out." My cold voice cut her off as I turned to Austin with a questioning gaze. "Austin, do you really think the Parks family's business will be handed over to you in the future? Do they not have a son?"
I paused for a moment and looked at Kailyn. "I see now. You've known all along that Isaac is your half-brother, so you've been guarding against him, right? No wonder. After all, he's not your full sibling. Someone who seized another's place would never invest their efforts in raising someone else's son as the heir."
As soon as I finished speaking, Kailyn's face turned pale.
"Laurel, that's enough! This is the Parks family's business. You claim you're not part of this family, so you have no right to speak so recklessly here," Austin snapped angrily, "Isaac was raised by Mom herself. Don't you know that the bond of being raised is greater than just being born?"
I raised an eyebrow and nodded in agreement. "You're absolutely right. But my mother was kicked out back then, wasn't she? And your fiancée even said that if I ever set foot in the Parks family, she would throw me out as well!"
"Austin, I didn't..." Kailyn denied.
"Really?" I looked at Kailyn with a smile.
She immediately froze, but after sizing me up, she didn't see anything on me. She looked at Austin self-righteously. "Austin, I really didn't say that."
I let out a cold laugh and slowly tucked my hair behind my ear, revealing a Bluetooth earpiece.
"I've recorded everything you just told me. Do you want to hear it?"
Austin reached out and took the earpiece. In the next second, he slammed the earpiece onto the ground and even stomped on it furiously.
"Laurel, that's enough! Who knows if what's in your earpiece is real or fake? I know I wronged you in the past, and I apologize. If you're angry, take it out on me instead."
"Oh? You said it yourself." I chuckled, my tone filled with casual mockery.
I glanced at Kailyn and caught a fleeting look of triumph on her delicate face, though it vanished in an instant.
"Austin, the price of offending me may be far worse than you imagine."
With that, I turned and walked away.
Actually, there was nothing recorded in the Bluetooth earpiece. But, someone standing at the door clearly heard our conversation.
Austin wasn't the only one who would have to pay the price.
