Online discussions were growing more intense, and someone even dug up old photos of my mom and Maddox from years ago, including their wedding photos.
The originally enviable loving couple had now become the laughing stock of the entire Internet, especially Melody.
No one had expected that the prestigious daughter of the Shepherd family would become a homewrecker, forcing her way into the Parks household while Maddox was still married to my mother. Melody even used the power of her family to justify it.
The happy family my mother once had was shattered because of Melody's intrusion.
Someone online exposed the truth about what had happened back then.
Maddox and Melody had been childhood sweethearts, but during his studies, Maddox fell in love with my mother.
The two of them did not care about their family's objections and insisted on getting together. However, they did not expect that even though my mother gave birth to a son for the Parks family, she still did not receive the approval of the Parks family. Even during her pregnancy, Maddox got involved with Melody, who was temporarily staying at the Parks estate.
No one expected my mother to divorce Maddox in a fit of anger and leave with nothing.
The internet was buzzing with speculation.
My mother actually came from a decent family. Her father was a teacher, and her mother was a well-known painter. The couple had a loving marriage and two daughters; my mother, Yvette, and Nella. If my mother hadn't married Maddox, their family could have lived a happy and peaceful life.
Unexpectedly, my mother chose to marry Maddox, despite their mismatched backgrounds.
Melody used cruel and malicious means to force my mother out of the Parks family. Fearing that she would bring trouble to her own family, my mother had no choice but to live a life of hiding and avoidance.
However, some people claimed that I wasn't Maddox's daughter, implying that my mother had an affair. That was why she was kicked out of the Parks family.
Just as I saw the malicious attacks slandering my mother, someone immediately uploaded my medical report online.
It showed that my blood type was the same as Isaac's.
Alex and I only stayed one night at the Parks family estate before heading back to Newton City the next day.
"Laurel, are you really going to live at Herrera Manor?" Sophina asked worriedly. The day before I returned to Newton City, she had rushed over after receiving a notification from Alex.
However, upon learning that I was moving into Herrera Manor, she barely slept all night. Her face was haggard with exhaustion.
"You don't have to follow me."
I knew very well that Lena didn't truly want to teach me manners. She just wanted to teach me a lesson.
More importantly, after the engagement banquet, Austin also returned to the Herrera family estate.
As soon as Lena found out that I had hit Austin at the Parks estate, she wasted no time. The moment she arrived at the villa, she called me, instructing me to pack up and move to the manor.
She didn't even give me a chance to refuse.
Sophina grumbled in frustration, "Laurel, you're pregnant now! Lena is clearly trying to make things difficult for you. What if something happens?"
I patted her shoulder gently and comforted her. "Don't worry. No matter how much Lena doesn't like me, I'm pregnant with the Herrera family's child. She won't be unscrupulous."
"Laurel, I'll go with you. Mr. Herrera instructed me to stay by your side. If anything happens, I'll be there to protect you," Sophina said, her eyes blazing with determination. Her tone carried a hint of excitement as she added, "Laurel, I swear I'll keep you and the baby safe."
Looking at her serious expression, I couldn't help but chuckle softly.
She was acting as if Herrera Manor were home to man-eating monsters.
As I left with Sophina, Hector hesitated, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he simply gave me a heavy, concerned look.
"Hector, don't worry. I'll be fine," I reassured him.
"Mrs. Herrera does have a bit of a temper," he sighed. "But, you mustn't let yourself be suffering."
I nodded, a gentle smile curling at my lips.
I wasn't afraid of her temper. What I feared more was if she treated me with excessive politeness. That would leave me with no idea how to strike back.
After getting into the car, I turned to Sophina, pondering for a moment before asking, "There's a doctor at Herrera Manor, right?"
Sophina looked at me in confusion, blinking blankly before nodding.
"That's good." I let out a sigh of relief. If I ended up angering Lena to death, I was afraid the entire Herrera family would hold a grudge against me.
And honestly, I already had more than enough enemies.
As I got into the car, I couldn't help but feel a little excited.
I was actually looking forward to seeing Lena again. To be honest, after just one day at the Parks estate, I was already feeling bored.
The moment I stepped into Herrera Manor, I saw Lena sitting upright on the sofa, her face dark with displeasure.
I stepped forward and greeted her, but just then, I noticed Austin standing to the side.
"Kneel!" Lena ordered.
I was stunned for a moment, then turned to Austin with a smile. "Austin, what did you do wrong to make your grandmother so angry?"
Austin lifted his gaze and cast me a sidelong glance. His lips curled into a disdainful smile.
Lena, who was sitting on the sofa, scolded coldly, "I'm asking you to kneel."
I blinked and took a deep breath. "Who died? Why should I be kneeling?"
Hearing my words, Lena abruptly stood up, grabbed the cane beside her, and swung it toward my legs.
I subconsciously took two steps back and instead struck Austin squarely, making him furrow his brows in pain.
At that moment, I nearly burst out laughing, but I managed to hold it in.
Lena's expression darkened instantly.
"Laurel, kneel!" she snapped, glaring at me with fury.
I still didn't move. "Why should I?"
She seemed unwilling to waste words with me and simply shot a look at Edna, who stood by her side.
Edna took a step forward and said coldly, "When Mrs. Herrera gives an order, you obey. If she tells you to kneel, you kneel."
Hearing that, I nearly cursed out loud. 'Do you think you're some kind of queen? Or does your family have a throne to inherit? If you want to discipline someone, deal with your own son. Trying to control a daughter-in-law who isn't even yours is just too much.'
Some elders liked to push their limits. When one gave them an inch, they thought they were the queen.
Seeing that I still didn't move, Edna said unhappily, "Mrs. Herrera is teaching you the rules. As a part of the Herrera family, now you must follow its rules."
I remained silent for a moment, let out a long sigh, and glanced at Lena, who was staring at me with disdain.
Then, I turned to look at Austin and said in a deep voice, "Austin, kneel!"
Austin's expression paused, then he snorted coldly. "Grandma told you to kneel, not me."
"I am your elder, aren't I? Now I tell you to kneel, and yet you refuse to listen? It seems like you haven't learned the Herrera family's rules properly!"
With that, I narrowed my eyes and looked meaningfully at Lena.
"Someone, bring me the family law! I don't believe I can't deal with you!" Lena gritted her teeth and glared at me, making it seem as if I had destroyed her entire family.
