I was stunned when I heard the words 'family law'.
I did not expect that just after arriving at the Herrera Manor today, Lena would want to take action against me.
At this moment, Austin, standing to the side, briefly showed a look of surprise followed by a cold smirk, watching me with glee.
However, Sophina stood in front of me, her expression alert as she watched Lena sitting on the sofa, her expression dark and menacing.
"Mrs. Lena, what exactly has Mrs. Laurel done wrong? You're asking her to kneel, and even invoking family law?" Sophina's voice trembled slightly, and after taking a deep breath, she continued, "She's pregnant right now. If anything happens to the child, who will take responsibility?"
"Shut up," Edna scolded angrily. "Sophina, Mrs. Herrera is teaching her the family rules. How can an outsider like you interfere?"
I narrowed my eyes and sneered at Edna. "Edna, are you a member of the Herrera family?"
"Laurel, you married my uncle and became part of the Herrera family, so you have to follow the rules of the Herrera family. In the Parks family, you would hit me at the slightest disagreement, do you think you have a reason to act like that?" Austin glared at me with resentment.
He had been pampered by the Herrera family since he was young. Other than being afraid of Alex, he had never been beaten up.
Especially in the Parks family, he probably wanted to be enraged in front of outsiders, but didn't dare to lay a hand on me, so he ran here to complain.
"The reason I hit you was simply because you were putting your hands on me," I said, looking directly at Austin with a stern face.
I didn't expect him to be so despicable and shameless, constantly provoking me, but when I finally retaliated, he ran to Lena to complain.
Having been with him for so many years, I never imagined he could be so heartless and indifferent.
"Laurel, what are you talking about?" Austin said with a helpless expression. "You've already married Uncle Alex, and I've married Kailyn, but you can't keep trying to cause trouble for Kailyn out of jealousy, can you?"
I slowly raised my head and looked at Austin's handsome and exquisite face. The noble and arrogant look in the past was as disgusting as it could be at this moment.
"So, I hit you because of that?" I tilted my head, speaking slowly.
Before Austin could speak, I burst out laughing.
In the past, I tolerated him because I was foolish. Even when he bullied me, I would swallow my pride and endure.
But now, in my eyes, he was nothing at all. I had originally intended to let things be, thinking we would mind our own business.
After all, the frustration had already been vented. But upon reflection, I realized I still hadn't scared him enough.
Otherwise, he would not have the nerve to come to Lena and stir up trouble.
Austin seemed to be struggling to control his anger, his expression calm as he continued, "I've been trying to show you respect, not wanting to fight with you in the Parks family. But what about you?"
Looking at the man in front of me, seriously spouting nonsense with an expression of both anger and frustration, I finally couldn't hold back and burst into laughter.
"Austin, the reason I hit you isn't just because I'm your elder and have the right to discipline you. More importantly, it's because you were the one who laid hands on me first. You and your fiancée are constantly causing trouble for me."
I paused and then coldly added, "And now you're saying I'm the one looking for trouble with you? What would I want with you? Do I want to ruin your relationship?" I fixed my gaze on Austin, my eyes sharp. "I know exactly what kind of person you are. Others might not know, but do you think I don't? I'm pregnant and can't stand the stench!"
"Enough!" Lena slammed her cane heavily against the floor, her body trembling with anger. Her finger wavered as she pointed at me. "I see you're getting out of hand! You really don't know your place. Are you trying to make the whole Herrera family unsettled? No matter what Austin did wrong, you shouldn't hit him in front of outsiders!"
I walked over to the chair in the center of the hall and slowly sat down, crossing my legs casually. With a calm expression, I spoke lightly, "Mom, it's not that I'm being unreasonable, it's that you're too biased towards your grandson. If you want to teach me the family rules, I'm willing to learn. But the moment I step in, you want to establish your authority by making me kneel and even consider using family law on me without asking any questions. Aren't you afraid of making a fool of yourself if this gets out? Is this really the Herrera family's way? I've been respectful because of your age and health, putting up with things. But you? You keep pushing me, so don't blame me for not being merciful."
Lena glanced at me and gave Edna a look.
Edna immediately walked toward me, intending to slap me, but to her surprise, the slap landed on Sophina's face instead.
Sophina's glasses flew off and hit the ground, but she still positioned herself to shield me.
In that instant, my anger flared. I abruptly shot up from my chair.
The chair behind me suddenly toppled over, and a heavy silence fell over the room.
Edna showed no sign of being moved by the anger on my face. With gritted teeth, she spat, "Drag Sophina out of here. Without Mrs. Herrera's orders, she is not allowed to step one foot into the Herrera family home!"
"Let's see who dares!" I retorted fiercely.
The next second, I picked up the chair on the ground and smashed it heavily at Edna's feet.
The chair instantly shattered into pieces.
The servants who were about to step forward looked at each other.
Even Edna looked stunned.
It seemed like she hadn't expected the chair, which had been fine just moments ago, to break so easily.
Just then, Kayden walked down from the second floor, his brows furrowed in concern. He quickly descended the stairs.
"Mom, what's going on?"
Kayden looked at me and said helplessly, "Laurel, what are you trying to do? Can't we talk things out?"
I was slightly stunned. I didn't expect Kayden to come to Herrera Manor.
He had been in the study all this time, and it seemed that Raphael must have heard the commotion outside, which was why he asked Kayden to come out and see what was going on.
"Kayden, it's not that I can't talk things out," I took a deep breath, "It seems that the rules of the Herrera family only apply to me, as an outsider. So, I don't think there's any need to follow them."
With that, I crouched down and picked up the glasses that had fallen to the ground, noticing that one of the lenses had cracked.
"Since Lena doesn't like me, she can have Alex divorce me. As for my lack of manners, perhaps you should discuss it with my biological father and see if he has any good advice for you,"
I said with a subtle smile, giving Austin a meaningful glance. "By the way, I also want to talk to him about how much Lena dotes on Austin. I don't think there's a need for him to marry into the Parks family."
Lena's expression suddenly changed.
Before she could yell, I added, "Family matters should not be aired out, but I think, no matter what, Kailyn is still my half-sister. Some things are better not shared with her, so I don't end up being accused of being unkind when I return to the Parks family."
