Isaac's eyes widened in anger as he slammed the coffee cup in his hand onto the ground. The shattering sound was especially ear-piercing in the silent cafe, and the coffee stains splattered on the tablecloth beside him.
"You're asking for it!" he roared.
I narrowed my eyes and looked at Isaac with a smile. I said casually, "The Shepherds are the prime suspects if anything happens to me. They won't rest easy with my sudden appearance.
"Please remind Melody to be respectful and let Kailyn Shepherd avoid causing any issues. Otherwise, the online response might go beyond simply judging our parenting."
Isaac, surprised by my audacity to threaten him, frowned, his expression turning icy. Gripping my arm, he demanded in a low voice, "Laurel, what are you playing at? Tell me, what will it take to get you back to the Parks family?"
I seared inwardly. I knew exactly why Maddox was so desperate for me to return to the Parks family. Public pressure was certainly a factor, but Willow's influence was the real catalyst.
Maddox intended to leverage the completion of Nifelheim City's development project to acquire a significant number of Herrera Group shares. However, he hadn't anticipated that at least 10% of his available funds would be directed towards the Adams Group.
What caught Maddox even more off guard was that the Adams Group had signed a ten-year cooperation plan with the Herrera Group.
The money he had invested went into the Herrera Group.
The Parks family was no longer capable of resisting the Herrera Group's power.
Maddox aimed to take over the Adams Group and dismantle the Herrera Group, but he didn't anticipate the two families would unexpectedly unite and blindside the Parks family.
The Parks family recently experienced financial difficulties with the company, which led to a disruption in the bank's funding chain.
The Shepherd family faced a similar problem as their patriarch's health declined, and the question of his successor remained unresolved.
Maddox aimed to secure the funds from the Shepherd family, but even if the head of the family agreed, his subordinates might not.
I looked straight into his eyes and asked, "Isaac, how much shares does Kailyn have in the company?"
Isaac raised his chin slightly. There was a trace of scrutiny in his eyes as he replied, "15%."
Then, I continued to ask, "What about you?"
Suppressing his anger, Isaac said in a deep voice, "Twenty percent. Dad holds the rest of the shares."
I chuckled at his response. Maddox wasn't naive; he didn't share the rest of the shares with Melody.
To put it bluntly, he was wary of the Shepherd family.
After a moment of silence, I slowly said, "I want 16% of the shares."
Isaac seemed to have heard a huge joke. His eyes widened as he looked at me in disbelief. He blurted out, "Are you crazy? Why do you want so many shares?"
I replied, "Can't I ask for it on behalf of my dead mother?"
Isaac's face instantly darkened as he glared at me, "It's impossible."
Noticing his grim expression, I pressed on, "What if the Herrera Group pulled its investment from the Nifelheim City development project?" Isaac scoffed. "Don't be ridiculous, Laurel," he replied.
"Alex can save me with his life. He's the heir of the Herrera Group now. Do you think he'd refuse if I asked?" I asked him back.
Isaac was slightly stunned and remained silent.
When our eyes met again, mine held a glint of mischief and confidence. "Actually," I said casually, "I forgot to mention I'm a shareholder in the Seastar Hotel."
Isaac was stunned on the spot. His eyes were filled with shock and doubt.
His lips trembled slightly. He wanted to say something, but he was at a loss for words.
I stood there silently, watching as suspicion faded from his face, replaced by reluctant belief.
Time seemed to have stopped at this moment.
It took Isaac a long time to react.
"Did you facilitate the collaboration between the Adams and the Herrera Groups?" Isaac asked, his gaze complex.
I raised my eyebrows and smiled. "Sure. It's a win-win thing."
After a long time, Isaac finally recovered from his shock. He took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down.
His voice became low and husky. "Is that a threat?"
I shook my head slightly and said, "No. I'm just fighting for what I deserve."
A trace of anger appeared on Isaac's face. He walked in front of me and stared at me coldly.
I could smell the faint cologne coming off him.
"Did you think Dad would compromise?" He narrowed his eyes and stared straight at me.
Actually, I didn't know if Maddox would agree.
However, letting me return to the Parks family was not an easy task.
Moreover, I was determined to quash any further action on their part. If the Parks family dared to kill Alex, they should consider that the Adams Group was my trump card.
After all, we were in the same boat now.
"I'll see if Father truly wants me back with the Parks family," I said to Isaac, meeting his gaze directly. My smile didn't reach my eyes. "I'll be waiting for your good news."
With that, I turned around and walked straight out of the cafe.
When we returned to the villa, Hector was surprised to see us. His eyes widened at the sight of Sophina's slightly swollen face, and his expression shifted. He then quickly glanced at me.
He didn't seem to notice that I was injured and sighed in relief.
"I'll get an egg to help reduce the swelling." Hector frowned, muttering, "Edna went overboard."
For a moment, I was speechless. Then, placing my hand on Sophina's face, I said reassuringly, "Don't you worry. I slapped her back. Her face will be swollen for a good few days too."
Hector stopped in his tracks and stared at me in disbelief. "Mrs. Herrera, you... you hit Edna?"
I nodded, but Hector's expression darkened.
He said worriedly, "Edna has been taking care of Lena for decades. You shouldn't underestimate her. Mrs. Herrera, she will definitely make things difficult for you.
I, however, frowned. "Don't worry, I don't think she'll provoke me again."
Hector was skeptical of what I said.
Sophina looked at me nervously. "Laurel," she said, "Lena fainted because I made her so angry. Do you think Alex will scold you when he gets back?"
"You're asking for it!" he roared.
I narrowed my eyes and looked at Isaac with a smile. I said casually, "The Shepherds are the prime suspects if anything happens to me. They won't rest easy with my sudden appearance.
