Before I could speak, Sophina's worried expression deepened. "Laurel, it's all my fault," she said, taking responsibility for the situation. "If I hadn't disagreed with Lena, you two wouldn't have argued. I'll apologize to Alex when he returns."
My heart ached for Sophina as I looked at her. Slapped unjustly, she was now left to clean up my mess.
"It's not your fault," I reassured her. "If you hadn't protected me, I might have been the one getting beaten up."
Sophina shook her head quickly, her eyes red and confused. "Laurel," she murmured, "Lena is clearly making things difficult for you because you don't have family here to support you."
I gave a small smile, but I knew deep down that Lena was furious.
Her fury at the heir not being her son was undeniable, but since she couldn't take it out on Alex, I became the target of her rage.
Another reason was that I wasn't the daughter-in-law she personally chose. She planned to use the Harvey family to control Alex.
To Lena's shock, Alex refused the arranged marriage and got married with me. Even if he was kicked out of the house, he remained determined not to marry the daughter of the Harvey family.
To put it bluntly, Alex did not want Lena to make the decision about his marriage.
Therefore, Alex married me to upset Lena. He also wanted to tell the Herrera family that he was independent and capable of making his own decision.
Lena believed Raphael would disinherit Alex as punishment, but to her surprise, Raphael accepted the marriage and named Alex his heir.
Lena, upset with me, used Austin's beating as an opportunity to retaliate and vent her anger on me.
Lena hadn't learned her lesson. She knew I wouldn't be pushed around, yet she still tried to control me.
She attempted to assert her authority over me by demanding I kneel before her, aiming to teach me a lesson.
She thought she could manipulate me because I didn't have family support.
Lena was mistaken. My mother's presence had held me back before, but now I dared to openly threaten Maddox. The Herrera family couldn't possibly intimidate me.
Furthermore, I had something on Leah. I wondered if Lena was getting on in years and had a poor memory.
The Herrera family probably thought I was out of control after today's incident, and I could only imagine the consequences.
They might let Alex to reprimand me so that I could return to Herrera Manor to apologize.
Or they might dismiss me as crazy and ignore me, leaving us to go our separate ways.
Lena's stubborn nature meant she wouldn't give up; she'd fight for as long as she drew breath.
On the other hand, the share price of the Parks Group had been falling.
Maddox, who had a bad reputation to begin with, was indifferent to the rumors online.
I saw many posts discussing Melody quickly disappear.
Maddox even openly admitted that he did have two marriages.
While he didn't explicitly acknowledge me as his daughter, he did confirm that my mother was his ex-wife.
However, many online trolls doubted my identity.
People gossiped that I wasn't Maddox's biological daughter, cruelly spreading rumors about my mother's infidelity during her marriage and claiming I had no connection to the Parks family.
Sharing Isaac's blood type didn't automatically make us biological siblings.
It was only when a DNA test report appeared that those trolls shut up.
As for where the report came from, it was not difficult to guess.
Later, Maddox confirmed that I was his biological daughter and would not release the test report.
Apart from him, only Alex could obtain this report.
I didn't expect him to help me.
"Don't worry," I said, "Alex won't harm me. But if you take the blame, you won't be able to handle the consequences."
I joked with a straight face, and when I saw Sophina's pale face, I laughed out loud.
"Hey, I was just kidding. I'm going to grab some sleep; I'm tired," I said with a yawn, heading for the spare bedroom.
Upon reaching the second floor, I overheard two cleaners whispering to each other.
Their voices were quiet, but their conversation was easy to overhear.
"Mrs. Herrera beat up Edna?"
"She's so brave! But isn't she worried that Mrs. Lena Herrera will take her anger out on Mr. Herrera?"
Immediately after, another servant sighed.
"It's heartbreaking that Mr. Herrera, despite finally finding freedom from his suffering, will likely face punishment from Mr. Raphael Herrera again, all for the sake of Mrs. Herrera."
Momentarily stunned, a flicker of doubt crossed my face before I pushed the door open, my expression hardening as I glared at them.
"Mrs. Herrera." An older maid looked at me in surprise when she saw me.
The other one lowered her head in a panic and greeted me in a trembling voice.
"What did you mean by what you said just now?" I frowned and stared at them in confusion.
"Mrs. Herrera. I... I don't know," one of them said.
"You don't know?" I asked coldly, my expression calm despite the unsettling unease creeping into my chest.
"Mrs. Herrera, what do you want to ask?" The older servant looked up in a daze.
"Alex was injured by Raphael?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. "But I just got back — how do you know what happened at Herrera Manor?"
One of the uniformed servants took a deep breath and paused before explaining, "Mrs. Herrera, my cousin, who's guarding Herrera Manor, told me what happened there today."
"Then why did Raphael punish Alex? Alex was injured by him?" I fixed a suspicious stare on the woman.
I had suspected that Alex's injuries were related to the Herrera family,
I had a suspicion that Lena was responsible.
Since Alex wasn't her biological son, Lena's actions were understandable.
However, I did not expect it to be Raphael.
"As soon as you left Herrera Manor, Mrs. Herrera, Mr. Raphael Herrera called Alex back..."
Noticing the servant's hesitation to speak, I felt a surge of anxiety and snapped, "Well? What happened?"
"He hit Mr. Alex Herrera. Because you're his wife and you angered Mrs. Lena Herrera, Mr. Raphael Herrera wanted Mr. Alex Herrera to take the blame for all your mistakes."
The servant's words stunned me. After a long silence, I asked, "Was he hurt because of me in the past?"
