As the servant wavered, Hector entered, pushing the door open.
The moment he arrived, the servant instinctively fell silent.
Hector, a long-time employee of the Herrera family, carried himself with steadiness, propriety, and an air of dignity.
I looked at Hector with a puzzled expression, my eyes filled with curiosity.
Hector waved at the servants and me and said softly, "You two can leave."
After they left, Hector turned to me with a gentler expression and said, "Mrs. Herrera, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me."
I asked anxiously, "Why did Raphael hit Alex? Is it because of me?"
My heart was in turmoil. I was worried that I might have caused problems for Alex.
Hector's heavy sigh seemed to deepen the wrinkles on his face.
He said slowly, "This doesn't concern you. Mr. Herrera used to be preoccupied with his birth mother, but since your arrival, he's found something else to hold onto."
I was confused. I frowned and asked, "Hector, I really don't understand. Alex is Raphael's biological son. How can he be treated like this?"
Hector sighed deeply, lost in thought for a moment as old memories resurfaced.
"Mr. Raphael Herrera did this to protect him. Back then, Alex's mother, Lily, married into the Herrera family after Raphael took a fancy to her. However, Raphael knew their age difference was significant, and that Lily was forced. He had always intended to let Lily go.
"However, the Black family had fallen.
"Lily's stepmother wasn't her biological mother. Her biological mother passed away shortly after her birth, and her father soon remarried. His new wife gave birth to a son, and Lily, fearing her family might try to sell her to another wealthy businessman, refused to return to them. Instead, she chose to stay with Raphael."
I was so shocked that my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe any parents would act like that.
Lily's mother was a stepmother, but her father was her biological father.
Disgust twisted Hector's face. "Jay is ruthless. He racked up huge gambling debts and, desperate for cash, kidnapped his nephew, Alex. Thankfully, Alex was clever enough to escape. Jay disappeared after that."
Hector paused before adding, "Raphael gave Lily money and encouraged her to move on with her life, leaving Alex to be raised by Lena. Lily, aware of who she was, knew remarrying wouldn't be easy and wanted nothing more to do with the Black family."
All kinds of feelings mixed together in my heart when I heard this.
Thinking of what Alex had gone through before, my eyes reddened. I asked again, "Then why does Lena keep targeting Alex?"
Hector frowned. "Mrs. Lena Herrera couldn't tolerate it," he said. "She took out her anger on Alex every time Raphael met Lily.
"Raphael was terrified once when Alex nearly died. Afterward, Alex avoided meeting Lily, but Lena remained wary of Alex.
"To protect Alex, Raphael can only teach him a lesson himself and appease Lena. But unlike Lena, he knew where to draw the line."
Fury tightened my hands into fists, my nails biting into my palms. "Why hadn't Alex left the Herrera family? Was he clinging to this painful life for his mother's sake?" I asked.
Hector was about to speak, but I couldn't listen anymore. I turned around and walked quickly to the door.
When I descended the stairs, I found Sophina there. My angry expression and hurried pace startled her. She quickly approached me and asked, "Laurel, where are you going?"
Taking a deep breath, I fought to appear calm. "Herrera Manor," I stated.
My thoughts raced as the scenery blurred past, unnoticed.
The memory of Alex's vulnerability years ago filled my thoughts as the car pulled up to Herrera Manor. I stepped out and walked directly inside.
The atmosphere in Herrera Manor was stifling. As I entered the hall, the servants stared openly, their surprise evident.
When Edna saw me, a look of disgust flashed across her eyes. She said coldly, "Mrs. Herrera, why are you here?"
I didn't beat around the bush and asked bluntly, "I'm here for Alex. Where is he?"
"Mr. Herrera?" The corners of Edna's mouth twitched as she put on a fake smile. She said slowly, "You just missed him. He just left after being taught a lesson by Mr. Raphael Herrera."
Looking at Edna's smug expression, I sneered and walked toward her slowly and said quietly, "Fine. I'll go see Lena. She must be awake by now. If not, I'll wait for her in her room. She did faint after all."
Edna's expression darkened and a hint of shock flashed across her eyes. She did not expect me to say such a thing.
Edna said, "Mrs. Herrera, please go back. Mrs. Lena Herrera hasn't woken up yet. Even if she wakes up, she might not want to see you."
Edna gave me a sidelong glance, her tone full of contempt.
I looked around calmly, but I didn't see Kayden's family.
"How can that do? If she couldn't wake up, won't I be blamed by the Herrera family?" I said.
The moment I stopped talking, Edna fixed me with a glare. "Mrs. Herrera," she demanded, "are you putting a curse on her?"
"Edna, you mentioned Lena hasn't woken up yet, and I'm worried something might happen," I said with a reassuring smile as I walked over to the sofa and sat down. Glancing at Sophina, I added, "Sophina, could you ask Lawrence to bring my luggage in? I'd like to stay while Lena is unconscious and also take this opportunity to learn about the Herrera family's customs.
"I'll need to set some guidelines for the servants, too. Lena and Raphael are getting up in years, and the servants become complacent and lax in their duties. They seem to have forgotten their place."
With that, I fixed Edna with a stare.
"Mrs. Herrera, this is the Herrera family's place. You need Lena's permission to stay here." Edna suppressed her anger, clenching her fists. "She refuses to see you. Can you handle the consequences if you upset her again?"
I remained motionless on the sofa, staring at Edna. Taking a deep breath to compose myself, I said, "Edna, please tell Lena to try and relax. I come from a humble background and wasn't raised with many advantages. Honestly, with my temper and the added stress of pregnancy, I'm worried I might lose control.
My parents raised me to never kneel before anyone but the deceased. So when Lena demanded I kneel before her, it felt utterly unacceptable.
