In the long corridor of the hospital, the smell of disinfectant filled the air. I gripped my phone tightly. The light from the screen reflected on my face, and my expression was solemn and anxious.
Before I could ask about Bonnie's condition, Lucas Bowen's gentle voice came from the receiver. "Bonnie is in our hospital. Don't worry. She's fine. It's just that her blood pressure is high. She has to stay for a week to recuperate."
I came back to my senses and frowned slightly. I was also a little worried.
"With her personality, I'm afraid Bonnie won't be willing to stay in the hospital obediently." I took a deep breath and continued, "Dr. Bowen, I'll transfer the hospitalization fee to you later. Please let her stay in the hospital."
Lucas chuckled on the other end and said gently, "Don't worry. I'm here."
My heart warmed, and I quickly said, "Thank you so much. If it weren't for you, I really wouldn't know what to do."
"There's no need to thank me. If you really want to thank me, just treat me to a meal the next time we meet," he said half-jokingly, his tone filled with familiarity.
I hurriedly agreed. "Of course, of course. It's just that I can't reply to Nifelheim City now. I'll owe you this meal."
Lucas sounded amused. "I have to go."
"Okay." I let out a long sigh of relief as I hung up.
Then, I transferred 3,000 dollars to Lucas.
I thought about how Javier's matter. After thinking for a while, I sent a text to Asher Yeats.
Then, Asher replied: [Okay.]
It had been more than 12 hours since Alex disappeared. There was no news from the police.
Actually, it might be a good thing that there was no news. It meant that he should still be alive. If something had happened, the corpse would have been revealed long ago. I comforted myself in my heart.
I ate too much for lunch and couldn't sleep for a while, so I asked Sophina to accompany me downstairs to bask in the sun.
I was staring absent-mindedly at the green tree when I suddenly heard a familiar voice behind me. When I turned around, I saw Lucas's smiling handsome face.
He was tall and straight. He was wearing a white doctor's coat without any wrinkles. The light blue shirt at the collar was slightly open, revealing his well-defined collarbones. His stethoscope was casually placed on his shoulder, and he exuded a professional and capable handsomeness.
I widened my eyes and was stunned for a few seconds before coming back to my senses. I blurted out with a puzzled expression, "Lucas... Why are you here?"
As I spoke, I subconsciously took half a step back and raised my hand to tuck the hair behind my ear. My eyes were filled with surprise.
The corners of Lucas's mouth curled up, revealing a mouthful of neat and white teeth. That smile was like the warm sun in spring, instantly dispelling some of the gloominess in my heart.
He put his hands leisurely into the pockets of his coat and tilted his head slightly. He looked at me with bright eyes and teased, "Why are you so surprised to see me? The hospital transferred me to do two emergency surgeries here. So I bumped into you."
Then, he smiled at me. "Are you afraid of me cashing the favor right now?"
"Of course not. I didn't think you'd be here."
Lucas said, "Don't worry, I've already gotten someone to help Bonnie. She knows that you're the one who paid for the hospitalization fees. She's afraid that you'll be angry, so she didn't dare to argue."
"Thank you."
Lucas seemed to have seen through my thoughts. His smile faded slightly. He took a step forward and bent down slightly. His gaze was level with mine as he said seriously, "When the surgery is over, don't forget what you owe me."
I nodded mechanically again, but I had mixed feelings. I watched him leave in a hurry and disappear around the corner.
When I returned to the ward, I reached into my pocket and found a note. The moment I unfolded it, my heart suddenly beat faster. It wrote: [Alex is still alive. Don't worry.]
I gripped the note tightly, my face full of suspicion. I thought, 'Why didn't Lucas say anything in front of me? Instead, he secretly stuffed the note to me. He clearly came to look for me on purpose.'
I stood rooted to the ground until Sophina pushed open the door and walked in. I kept thinking about Lucas's words and was shocked.
I thought, 'He said that he had two surgeries to perform. Was he here to operate on Alex?'
I quickly walked to Sophina's side and said in a low voice, "Sophina, go and ask if anyone in the hospital needs to undergo surgery today."
Sophina quickly nodded when she saw my nervous and anxious expression. "Okay, I'll go now. Laurel, stay in the ward and don't run around."
As she started to turn away, I hastily grabbed her arm again.
When I went downstairs just now, besides Sophina, the two bodyguards were following. I wondered if a spy was around Alex.
I added, "Don't tell anyone. Buy something to eat when you get back."
Sophina Trenton was stunned for a moment. Although she did not understand what I meant, she still nodded silently.
Half an hour later, we learned that the top floor of the hospital had taken in a big shot who had suddenly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. The surgery was three hours later.
The chief surgeon was specially transferred from the other hospitals, and the hospital attached great importance to this patient.
My heart was pounding like a little rabbit. I hurriedly dialed Lawrence's number again, but the call wasn't picked up.
"Laurel, what's wrong?" Sophina hurriedly held my hand and asked gently when she saw my uneasy expression. "Laurel, your hands are so cold."
As she spoke, she stood up, took a blanket, and draped it over my shoulders. I didn't answer Sophina. I just quietly held the warm cup in my hand.
The sky outside the window gradually darkened, and the pale light in the ward made one dizzy. I sat on the edge of the bed, unable to stop myself from trembling slightly.
Three hours later, I asked Sophina to go out and get some food. I also asked her to ask about the surgery on the top floor.
About twenty minutes later, the door of the ward was pushed open.
I thought it was Sophina, but I realized that it was Lucas in a white coat.
He gave me a meaningful look and lowered his voice. "The operation just ended. It was a success."
I suddenly stood up. My eyes were red as I shouted with a sobbing voice, "What happened?"
Lucas said in a low voice, "He's seriously injured. He still has to be carefully taken care of in the future, but his life is not in danger for the time being. Don't panic."
"Thank you."
Lucas patted my back lightly. "Alright. It's good that he is safe now."
He forced himself to stay awake and reminded me a few more times to recuperate before putting on his mask and leaving.
After he left, I raised my hand and realized that tears had already streamed down my face.
When Sophina pushed open the door and walked in, she saw that my eyes were red. She quickly hugged me and comforted me for a long time, but I smiled.
