I slept especially well throughout the night. I did not have any more nightmares. When I woke up the next morning, the sunlight shone through the window. There was some warmth in the cold ward.
After washing up, I pushed open the door of the ward and walked out.
Perhaps it was because I had slept for too long, but my limbs and bones felt as if they had been crushed by a heavy rock. They were extremely sore, and every time I moved, there was a hint of sourness.
The two young nurses who passed by whispered, "I heard that the VIP ward upstairs has arranged for Bailee Foster to go over and take care of an important patient. Who exactly is that person up there? Why is he so mysterious?"
The other one answered, "Nothing is certain. There are only two people participating in the surgery in our entire hospital. The senior nurse, Bailee Foster, and the anesthesiologist, Tyrone Lyons."
After hearing that the big shot upstairs had woken up, my tense heart quietly relaxed a little.
"Laurel, who exactly is the big shot upstairs?" Sophina had come over at some point. Her eyes were round and full of curiosity.
I tugged weakly at the corners of my mouth and shook my head. Alex's pale face on the sickbed flashed across my mind, and my heart could not help but ripple.
The sudden ringtone of my phone broke the silence. Seeing that it was a call from Lawrence, I quickly pressed the answer button. "Mrs. Herrera. Mr. Herrera has been found and is temporarily out of danger. The news is sealed tightly and not many people know."
"I understand." I sighed faintly and replied indifferently.
Just as I was about to hang up, Lawrence hesitated. After a pause, he stammered, "Mr. Herrera is seriously injured. Fortunately, someone saved him, but he's still very weak... Don't worry too much."
The words that I wanted to say were stuck in my throat, and I could only give a faint hum.
After hanging up the phone, I felt an inexplicable emptiness in my heart, as if a key part was missing. I was clearly fine, but this sense of loss lingered in my heart.
When Alex woke up, the first person he looked for was not me, but Lawrence. At this moment, my heart felt heavy, as if someone had stabbed it with a needle.
If the person who performed the surgery was not Lucas, I would not know how Alex was doing at this point.
Thinking of this, I decided to treat Lucas to a meal. Alex was already out of danger. There must be someone who could take good care of him. I felt that I could also return to Nifelheim City in peace.
When I returned to the ward, I saw Austin and Kailyn walking towards me.
"Laurel, don't be ungrateful. Dad asked me to bring you back to the Parks family. You can't stay in the hospital. The child in your stomach won't be born for at least half a year, right?" Kailyn stared at me with a deep gaze. Her tone was filled with sarcasm, and her eyes were filled with arrogance.
The corners of my mouth curled up into an extremely disdainful smile. I raised my eyebrows and looked at her. "It's not impossible for me to go back. I've already said my conditions."
Kailyn was stunned for a moment. Her eyes widened in anger. "Dad has already compromised. What else do you want? If Dad can acknowledge you, you should be grateful!"
Austin stood at the side with his arms crossed. He sneered and looked at me, "Laurel, Kailyn personally came to bring you back to the Parks family. You should feel honored!"
I took a deep breath and suppressed my disgust. I straightened my back and glanced at the two of them coldly. "Why should I go back? There's no benefit in being the Parks family's daughter."
Austin was impatient. He went forward and grabbed Kailyn. He frowned and reprimanded, "Kailyn, why are you nagging her? It's because Dad is soft-hearted that he wants to take her back. Since she doesn't want to go back, let her fend for herself."
Kailyn sighed softly and looked at me with a complicated expression. "Laurel, I'll give you three days. I won't wait for you after that."
"There's no need." I spoke coldly. As I watched Kailyn and Austin leave, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. I held onto the door frame of the ward and barely managed to stand still.
The child in my stomach seemed to sense my emotions and moved slightly.
When I returned to the ward, I sat by the bed and gently caressed my slightly bulging abdomen. My gaze gradually softened.
No matter how difficult the road ahead was, I had to persevere for the sake of the child in my stomach.
After much hesitation, I called Lucas and asked him to meet me at a restaurant near the hospital that night.
Lucas agreed readily. His voice was filled with concern, making my originally heavy heart feel a little comforted.
In the restaurant, Lucas was waiting. When he saw me enter, he quickly stood up and welcomed me to my seat. He even carefully pulled out a chair for me.
"Laurel, you don't look too good. The surgery was a success. Alex is lucky. Don't worry too much." Lucas looked at me worriedly.
I nodded and squeezed out a smile. "Thank you. If you weren't the chief surgeon, I wouldn't dare to imagine the consequences. This meal is to thank you for saving his life and to tell you that I plan to go back to Nifelheim City. I... have nothing to do here."
Lucas frowned and was about to speak when the waiter interrupted him.
For a moment, only the sound of cutlery clinking could be heard at the dining table. The atmosphere was a little solemn.
"Laurel, you're pregnant, and the Parks family is eyeing you covetously. You might not be at peace in Nifelheim City." Lucas finally broke the silence.
I shook my head with a bitter smile. "I don't have a choice. I won't go back to the Parks family for the time being. If I go back to Nifelheim City, there will be at least Bonnie and Javier. Alex didn't look for me when he woke up. It might not be convenient for him to show his face for the time being."
A hint of pity flashed across Lucas's eyes. After hesitating for a moment, he said, "Then wait for me to finish a surgery tomorrow. We'll go back to Nifelheim City together. I'm worried about you being alone."
"It's fine. Sophina will accompany me back." Instinctively, I turned my head and looked at the two bodyguards who were standing not far behind me.
He asked, "Don't you want to know who saved Alex?"
I shook my head and looked at Lucas. He was actually very good-looking. He had a pair of clear and clean eyes and a high nose bridge.
He was a completely different person from when he was young. At that time, he had a chubby face. However, he was always smiling and would always secretly eat snacks during class.
If not for his good grades, he might have been despised by the teachers.
The teachers always said that Gideon Hawke had led Lucas astray because Gideon always looked sloppy.
I knew that Lucas was smart but carefree. If anything, he would be the one to lead Gideon astray.
Just as I was about to speak, my phone suddenly rang. It was an unknown number.
"I'll agree to your terms. I'll get your brother to pick you up at the hospital tomorrow. Come home." A clear, low, and hoarse voice suddenly sounded. I couldn't help but freeze.
My hand that was holding the phone couldn't help but tremble slightly, but my expression was calm. There was a faint smile in my voice. "Okay!"
