Melody walked over leisurely. Her gaze swept past me and landed on Rebecca. She said softly, "Mom, what's wrong? Laurel just came back. Don't be angry with her."
As she spoke, she even pulled Rebecca's hand affectionately and patted it gently.
I looked at them thoughtfully. My intuition told me that the relationship between them was not that good.
If it was really good, Rebecca would not move back to the Parks manor alone. Rebecca snorted coldly and did not continue the conversation.
Melody wasn't angry. She turned to look at me and smiled gently. "Laurel, you must be tired. Don't be angry. Let's discuss it properly, okay?"
I didn't say anything. I just stood there quietly, my eyes distant.
Kailyn walked forward and took my hand in a fake manner. "Laurel, you actually replied to the Parks family. We're family from now on. Don't ruin our harmony over such a small matter."
Her hand was soft, but the touch made me feel disgusted. I retracted my hand without a trace and nodded slightly in response.
Now was not the time to fall out. If she could endure it, so could I.
Maddox coughed lightly. "Don't just stand there. Let's eat first and talk while we eat."
Only then did everyone slowly move to the dining room. The table was filled with exquisite dishes, but none of them could whet my appetite.
Rebecca sat at the head of the table, her expression still gloomy. Maddox sat at the side, occasionally giving me looks to tell me to restrain myself.
Melody served the dishes elegantly and even picked up food for Rebecca from time to time. She whispered words to soften the atmosphere while Kailyn ate obediently. However, when she occasionally looked up at me, the haze in her eyes flashed.
I was silent the entire time. Sophina stood behind me. I could feel her worry.
Halfway through the meal, Rebecca put down her silverware and said, "Since you've entered the Parks family, you have to abide by the rules of the Parks family."
I paused and looked up at her with a stubborn expression. "Mrs. Parks, I don't understand the rules you're talking about. I only know that I'm a guest here. My assistant was arranged by my husband to take care of me. Why can't she stay in my room and take care of me? I'm pregnant now. If anything happens, who will be responsible?"
Just as Rebecca was about to flare up, Melody quickly tried to smooth things over. "Mom, Laurel just came back. She's not familiar with the family situation. Just teach her. Don't be angry."
Then, she looked at me and gently advised, "Laurel, the Parks family is a big family. Some rules are indeed complicated, but it's also for the sake of the family's reputation. Please bear with it. As for your assistant, we'll discuss it later."
I sneered. "There's no need to discuss. I can sit here and eat today, but there's no need for me to do it next time. If my assistant stays in the servant's room, I'll stay with her."
Maddox put down fork heavily and said in a dignified voice, "Laurel, don't be willful! I already said that we'll discuss it later."
"Discuss? Did you discuss with me about taking me back and having me stay here? Did you discuss with me about having me stay in a cold and damp room?" I said calmly, my tone carrying a hint of a smile.
Rebecca was so angry that her entire body was trembling. She pointed at me and was speechless for a long time. Melody quickly got up to comfort Rebecca.
Kailyn exclaimed at the right time, "Laurel, you just came back. How dare you disobey Grandma?"
"Disobedience? Aren't I talking nicely?" I stared at Kailyn in confusion and sighed helplessly. "Forget it. Since Grandma doesn't want to see me, I'll go back to my room and wait for you to discuss it. Otherwise, I'll be blamed again."
With that, I turned and strode out of the dinning room. Sophina hurried after me.
"Miss Parks, let's not be angry with them. It's not worth it." Sophina Trenton comforted me with heartache. "Why don't I still stay in the servant's room? It's actually not a big deal."
Although Sophina would eat with Dorothy and stay with her when I was home with Alex, it was because she didn't dare to sit at the same table as Alex and was afraid of disturbing my life with Alex.
However, the so-called rules of the Parks family were actually deliberately making things difficult for me.
After lunch, Margot came upstairs and told me that Rebecca agreed to stay with me, but she couldn't have meals with me.
I nodded in agreement. There was no rush. During dinner, I said that I wasn't feeling well and took a casual bite before returning to my room.
That night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I realized that I looked terrifyingly haggard.
When I went downstairs, there was no one in the living room. It was strangely quiet.
I walked straight to the dining room. Just as I reached the door, I heard Kailyn's gentle and pretentious voice coming from inside. "Grandma, don't be angry. Laurel might not be used to it yet. Please bear with her."
"With her personality, sooner or later, the Parks family will be in chaos." Rebecca's voice was still filled with anger.
I was stunned. I did not expect Kailyn and her family to still be there.
I sneered and strode into the dining room. Everyone's eyes instantly focused on me.
I ignored them and sat down at the dining table. I picked up a piece of bread and nibbled on it as if the intense conflict last night had never happened.
Maddox frowned. "Laurel, don't you have any manners? Aren't you going to greet your elders?"
I swallowed the bread in my mouth and looked up at him. "I didn't expect the Parks family to have more rules than the Herrera family!"
Rebecca slammed the table. "This is the Parks family. Naturally, we have to abide by the Parks family's rules!"
Melody quickly stood up to smooth things over. "Stop arguing. We are a family. Laurel, you've just returned. Why don't you let Kailyn accompany you around the house today to familiarize yourself with the environment?"
Before I could refuse, Kailyn enthusiastically added, "Laurel, let me take you for a walk in the garden. Our garden is very beautiful."
That smile was so sweet that it was cloying, but I felt a chill. I was about to refuse when I thought better of it. I could find an excuse to go out for a walk. I followed Kailyn to the garden outside. She was all smiles.
When we reached a remote corner, she suddenly stopped and turned to look at me. The smile on her face disappeared and was replaced with a sinister expression. "Laurel, don't think that you can take away my things just because you entered the Parks family. You better know your place, or you'll suffer."
I crossed my arms and sneered. "Kailyn, you change your attitude so quickly. Are you afraid that I'll steal your limelight? Don't worry, I don't care about it."
She snorted coldly and revealed a smug expression. "Father has already given you 20% of the company's shares. Even if you want to sell it, I'm afraid no one will dare to buy it. You must be overjoyed to receive a little dividend every year, right? After all, you probably won't be able to earn so much money in your life, right?"
As she spoke, she even pulled Rebecca's hand affectionately and patted it gently.
