The Parks family booked the most luxurious business center hotel in Wadiff City for Rebecca's birthday party.
The night sky was lit up by gorgeous fireworks. The fireworks that lasted for two hours instantly bloomed and disappeared. Millions of yuan were burned, but Rebecca did not cry out in heartache.
Outside the hotel, there was a long line of luxury cars. Famous people from all walks of life came one after another. They were all influential figures.
I stood on the red carpet covered in flowers. The black evening gown made me feel unfree. Although it was so beautiful that I couldn't take my eyes off it, it was incompatible with the surrounding liveliness.
The gown was personally chosen by Kailyn. She said that she wanted me to appear in the most stunning manner. I knew in my heart that this was just a trick.
The whispers in my ears came in waves. Those harsh and disdainful words drilled into my ears.
A person said, "Look, this is the Parks family's new daughter. She's dressed decently, but no matter how you look at her, she looks poor. She's probably a gold digger who's here to climb up the social ladder."
Another said, "I heard that after her mother left the Parks family back then, she went around doing odd jobs and mixed in all kinds of lowly places. How good can her daughter be?"
A third person said, "I don't know if she is actually related to them. If it's an imposter, the Parks family will become a joke."
A fourth said, "I heard that her private life was quite messy in the past. Why would Mr. Herrera like such a person?"
Someone esle said, "Probably because she is pregnant with his child."
I gripped the hem of my dress so tightly that my knuckles turned white. My nails almost dug into my palms. I really wanted to rush up and give these pampered young ladies a few tight slaps.
However, I knew in my heart that if I made a move, it would be exactly what Kailyn wanted. I could only take a deep breath, straighten my back, and smile faintly.
Unexpectedly, Rebecca waved for me to go over and let me hold her hand in public as we walked into the party hall.
Kailyn stood at the side with a smile on her lips. Her smile was so sweet that it was sickening, but there was a trace of malice in her eyes. I sneered in my heart. They wanted to put on a show before ruining me.
After entering the hall, Rebecca gently patted my hand and leaned closer to warn me in a low voice, "All the people who came today are famous figures. Behave yourself and don't cause trouble for me. Otherwise, you will suffer."
With that, she took Kailyn's hand and said in a gentle tone, "Kailyn, bring your sister to make some friends. I won't join in the fun with the young people."
Kailyn hurriedly nodded and held my arm enthusiastically. She smiled brightly. "Laurel, I'll bring you to meet my friend."
I could not refuse in front of everyone and those reporters who were waiting for a drama. I could only brace myself and follow.
"Laurel, long time no see." A delicate voice sounded. I looked up and saw that it was Abigail Cole.
She was wearing a pink gown and exquisite makeup. Her lips curled into a faint smile, but her eyes seemed to be poisoned as she stared straight at me. I was surprised. The Cole family and the Parks family had never been friends. I wondered why she showed up.
Out of politeness, I smiled slightly, but my gaze drifted elsewhere, unwilling to tangle with her too much.
"Kailyn, do you think you should call her sister or aunt now?" Abigail looked at Kailyn with a smile and then looked at me. It was obvious that she wanted to stir up trouble and laugh at us.
I cursed inwardly. This woman was really boring. Just as I was about to find an excuse to escape, a woman with overly plastic surgery and facial features suddenly shouted, "Kailyn, your fiancé is here!"
I subconsciously turned around and saw Kayden Herrera and his wife enter in their best attire. Austin followed behind them.
His figure was tall and straight, and his suit made him look even more handsome. When his gaze swept over and landed on me, a trace of shock flashed across his eyes, as fast as a shooting star.
He walked forward steadily with a polite and distant smile on his lips. "Aunt."
Kailyn reached out and pulled his arm. She frowned slightly. "Shouldn't you call her sister?"
My expression was calm as I said calmly, "You should call me Aunt. You can't mess up the seniority."
As soon as I said this, Kailyn's expression changed slightly. The people around us began to whisper.
Back then, when her mother intervened in my parents' marriage, everyone knew about it. Since I had already expressed my attitude, I naturally would not accept her calling me sister.
What surprised me was that Kailyn didn't flare up. Instead, she called me aunt.
Austin stared straight at me. Then, he asked with concern, "Aunt, where's my uncle? Is he not here yet?"
Seeing that I was silent, Kailyn tilted his head and looked at Austin Herrera. "Will Uncle come today?"
Before Austin could answer, her gaze landed on me again. "Auntie, why didn't you tell us? The family is quite worried about his injuries."
"Injury?" Austin also frowned. "Uncle is fine. He just injured his leg."
After saying that, he looked at me thoughtfully and frowned slightly. "Aunt, don't you know? Or did you not contact Uncle?"
His voice was neither high nor low. Everyone's gazes were sharp and filled with curiosity and ridicule. They were all waiting to see me make a fool of myself.
Before I could respond, Kailyn leaned forward again, her eyes flickering. "Auntie, don't believe the messy news on the Internet. You and Uncle have just gotten married. He definitely won't like someone else."
She probably didn't believe her own words. She was purely putting on an act in front of everyone.
Austin looked surprised, then frowned. "Auntie, I thought Uncle would contact you when he woke up. It turns out..."
"Since Uncle is fine, why didn't you tell us?" Kailyn's tone carried a hint of complaint.
Looking at the two of them echoing each other, I felt that it was ridiculous.
As soon as they finished speaking, there was a commotion at the entrance of the party hall. Everyone automatically made way, as if they were stars surrounding the moon. I looked up and my heart sank.
Alex was sitting in a wheelchair, slowly pushed by a young woman in her early twenties.
The woman was wearing a pure white dress. The light shone down, reflecting the collagen on her face.
Alex turned around. His eyes were filled with worry, and his lips moved slightly, as if he was comforting her softly. The woman smiled sweetly and raised her head. Her eyes were as clear as stars, untainted by dust, revealing an innocent look.
For a moment, I felt the air around me thicken. Every breath I took was sour.
I clenched my fists, my nails stinging my palms, trying to use the pain to steady my mind.
When Alex saw me, there was a moment of panic in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but the woman beside him beat him to it. "Hello, Mrs. Herrera. I'm Bailee Foster."
