"Enough!" Isaac's deep voice sounded again with an unquestionable authority. Kailyn pursed her lips and closed her mouth unwillingly.
Isaac frowned slightly. His gaze landed on Kailyn and his voice was cold. "Dad has allowed him to enter the Parks family. Even if you don't like him, you have to accept that."
My heart skipped a beat. I didn't expect Isaac to protect Zachary. My gaze lingered on his cold face for a few more seconds.
At this moment, the butler rushed in. "Mr. Isaac, Mr. Maddox wants you and Miss Parks to go to the study."
As soon as he finished speaking, Kailyn's eyes flashed with surprise. She quickly asked, "Am I not included?"
The butler shook his head. Kailyn glared at me and then looked at Isaac. She bit her lip and looked unconvinced, but she didn't say anything in the end.
I asked Sophina to bring Zachary back to his room first so that Kailyn wouldn't vent her anger on him again.
Isaac and I walked into the study together. The entire study was bigger than I had imagined. There were tall bookshelves everywhere. There were all kinds of books on the bookshelves.
Maddox was sitting in an armchair behind his desk, looking down at a file. He looked up when he heard us come in and his eyes scanned us.
Maddox looked up at us and put down the document in his hand. He pointed at the chair beside him. "Sit."
Isaac and I sat down.
Maddox leaned back in his chair slightly and folded his hands on his abdomen. After looking at us for a moment, he said, "I called you here for something important.
"Zachary's identity is special. Now that he has joined us, Laurel, you have to take care of Zachary. You have to pay special attention to your words and actions. Don't let anyone catch you slipping. Zachary is still young and insensible. You have to bear with him."
Isaac's expression was cold as he looked at Maddox intently. "Dad, what do you mean?"
I frowned slightly and looked puzzled. "I can't stay in the Parks family forever."
Maddox coughed lightly. "I know. I'm still worried about Zachary being taken care of by someone else. Take care of him, and I'll give you money."
I was stunned before thinking, 'Does he mean for me to keep Zachary with me?
'Is this a joke? I'm pregnant, and I have to raise a half-brother?
'If Melody really wanted to, she could have taken both of us out with one action.'
At this moment, Isaac did not speak. I could only sigh in my heart. I pursed my lips and replied, "I will try my best to take good care of him."
Maddox turned to look at Isaac. "Isaac, as my eldest son, your marriage can't be delayed. You should meet the blind date arranged."
"Got it, Dad." Isaac frowned slightly.
Maddox nodded slightly as if he was satisfied with this answer. He picked up the document again and casually flipped through it. He asked casually, "Laurel, call Alex over, and let's have a meal together."
My heart tightened and I hesitated before saying, "He hasn't recovered yet."
Maddox frowned. "It's just a meal. Wasn't him in good spirits yesterday? Even if you're pregnant now, as his wife, you still have the responsibility to take care of him. You can't let others do everything for you."
"Okay."
Maddox waved his hand. "Alright, go ahead. Remember what I said."
I heaved a sigh of relief when I walked out of the study.
Walking out of the study, Isaac suddenly asked me to hold on to Alex and not divorce him no matter what happened.
Hearing Isaac's reminder, I was confused, but I still nodded.
I accompanied Zachary throughout the afternoon. After returning to my room after dinner, I called Alex.
I thought about asking him to come for a meal when he was free. It didn't matter even if he didn't come. Anyway, I would have an excuse.
After the call went through, no one picked up.
Just as I was about to hang up, a voice came from the other end of the line.
"Hello." A soft voice entered my ears.
"I'm looking for Alex. Put him on." I tried to keep my tone calm, but an inexplicable irritation was welling up inside me.
It was the nurse who answered the call.
"I'm sorry, Alex can't answer the phone right now. He's resting," Bailee said unhurriedly and lowered her voice. "May I know who you are? I'll pass the message for you when he wakes up."
I frowned. "I'm his wife. I didn't expect him to sleep so early."
I unconsciously raised my voice. I was confused as to why Alex's phone ended up in Bailee's hands.
Even as his wife, I wouldn't answer his calls for him.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Herrera. Mr. Herrera hasn't been sleeping well these past few days. He just fell asleep. If it's not something important, I can tell him when he wakes up. Is that okay?" Bailee's tone was gentle.
However, from her words, she seemed to have stayed by Alex's side all night. Otherwise, she would not know that he did not sleep well.
I smiled and took a deep breath. I suddenly felt an indescribable sense of awkwardness.
However, in the end, I suppressed the unhappiness in my heart and said calmly, "Then tell him that my father wants him to come home for a meal. If he's not free, then forget it."
"Okay, Mrs. Herrera. When he wakes up, I'll tell him."
I hummed indifferently. Just as I was about to hang up, I suddenly heard a rustling sound on the phone.
Then, I heard Alex's low and slightly hoarse voice reach my ears. "Laurel, what's wrong?"
His voice was very soft, as if he had just woken up from a nap.
"My father asked me to call you for a meal. Are you free?" I took a deep breath and calmed down.
Alex paused. "There's been a lot of work at the company recently. I'm afraid I won't be able to."
"Can't you spare the time for a meal?" For some reason, I didn't want him to appear. However, when I heard his rejection, I felt a faint sense of unhappiness.
When I realized that it was Bailee who answered his call, Isaac's words kept ringing in my ears.
Alex said, "Laurel, I..."
"If you don't have time, forget it." I interrupted Alex.
Actually, I already knew that he didn't love me. So I wouldn't press on.
Moreover, Isaac was right. No matter what happened, I couldn't divorce Alex yet.
"Take care of yourself." I didn't want to force him anymore and was about to hang up.
"Wait, Laurel." Alex stopped me. "You're in the Parks family now, so you have to be careful. If you encounter anything, you must tell me."
I was slightly taken aback. I hadn't expected him to say that. "Yes, I understand."
Isaac frowned slightly. His gaze landed on Kailyn and his voice was cold. "Dad has allowed him to enter the Parks family. Even if you don't like him, you have to accept that."
