After hanging up, I sat quietly on the edge of the bed, my thoughts in a mess.
If Alex really cared about me, I wondered why he didn't contact me immediately after he woke up. Even when we met, he was very cold.
I was lost in thought when a soft knock on the door interrupted my reverie.
"It's me." Zachary's voice was timid and hoarse after crying.
I got up to open the door and saw Zachary standing at the door. His eyes were red and swollen like ripe peaches, and they were filled with tears.
"I can't sleep. I want to sleep with you." He looked at me pitifully, his small hands tugging at the corner of his shirt uneasily.
My heart instantly tightened. I leaned over and gently pulled him into my arms. "Okay, come in."
On the bed, Zachary leaned against me tightly. After a while, his breathing became even and long, and he fell asleep.
I stared at his quiet little face, but my heart ached for some reason.
Once upon a time, when my mother took me away from the Parks family, Isaac was only four years old. He must be like Zachary now, lonely and afraid. Perhaps he did not even dare to cry loudly.
The next morning, I was woken up by a commotion.
When I went downstairs, I saw that Kailyn was bossing the servant because the servant had used the wrong cup to pour milk for her.
The new servant looked terrified and stammered, "Miss Parks, I don't think there's anything different about the two cups..."
"Are you blind?" Kailyn's eyes widened in anger. She raised her hand and smashed the cup on the ground, causing fragments to fly everywhere. "How are the two cups the same?"
"It's all my fault. Don't be angry!" The servant trembled in fear and hurriedly bent down to apologize.
"Are you sure?" Kailyn's lips curled into a mocking smile. She crossed her legs elegantly and sat on the chair, looking down at the servant coldly.
The servant nodded hurriedly.
"Since you sincerely admit your mistake, I'll forgive you. Otherwise, people will say that I'm bullying you." Kailyn's tone was filled with charity.
"Thank you, Miss Parks." The servant bowed as if she had been pardoned. The fear on her face faded slightly.
However, Kailyn smirked and said slowly, "Remember to compensate me with a cup."
As she spoke, she got up and walked to the servant with a sweet smile on her face. "Remember to make it exactly the same!"
Shock flashed across the servant's eyes. She only came back to her senses after being reminded by someone. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she only nodded helplessly.
I looked coldly at Kailyn's arrogant back and then at the servant kneeling on the ground cleaning up the broken glass. Her eyes were red as she bit her lower lip and held back her tears.
"Why didn't you say anything when you took the cup? Now, not only did you make Miss Parks angry, but you've also been scolded. You might even implicate us." Another servant beside her glared at the middle-aged woman with disdain before turning around and entering the kitchen.
The middle-aged woman seemed to have thought of something. She looked up at the woman who had kindly reminded her and asked timidly, "Sandra, where did Miss Parks buy her cup? How much did it cost?"
"Didn't they tell you?" Sandra Ogley frowned.
The middle-aged woman looked confused and shook her head.
Sandra sighed softly. "This cup is very expensive. It's bought from a set. It's at least 1,500 dollars. It's better than losing your job."
"1,500 dollars?" The middle-aged woman's face instantly turned pale. She loosened her grip and the glass piece cut her palm. Blood gushed out, but she seemed to be unaware and sat on the ground.
Sandra frowned. "Your hand..."
"I'm fine." The middle-aged woman came back to her senses and shook her head frantically.
"I'll tell you the address to buy the cup later. The butler should know." Sandra couldn't bear it.
After a moment of silence, the middle-aged woman nodded and said, "Sandra, thank you."
Sandra turned around and was about to leave when she stopped. She turned around and reminded, "When you see Miss Parks these days, hide. Don't make her angry again."
"Okay," the middle-aged woman replied in a low voice. After cleaning up the broken glass, she looked up and saw me leading Zachary down the stairs.
Zachary had sharp eyes. When he saw her injured hand, he quickly took out the band-aid from his small bag and jogged over to hand it to her. He said in a childish voice, "This is for you."
The middle-aged woman was stunned. She took the band-aid and her eyes instantly moistened. She raised her hand and hurriedly wiped her tears with her sleeve. She looked at me and called out hesitantly, "Miss Parks."
I nodded slightly with an indifferent expression and pulled Zachary to sit down at the dining table.
After a while, when breakfast was not served, the middle-aged woman seemed to have sensed something amiss and hurriedly said, "Miss Parks, I'll bring you food now. I'll be right there."
I knew that although Maddox had admitted my identity, Melody was the one in charge. I also brought along Zachary, whom she hated. The servants would not be respectful to me.
Not long after, the middle-aged woman brought over two glasses of milk and fine food. She stood quietly at the side and wanted to say something but hesitated.
After we finished eating, she mustered her courage and said, "Miss Parks, I..."
"Yes?" I looked up at her.
"I want to get a month's salary in advance." Her eyes were red, and her voice was pleading.
I narrowed my eyes and looked at her. In a daze, I seemed to see the humbleness of my mother in front of others back then.
When I was young, I got into trouble and stabbed someone in the arm with a pencil. The teacher looked for my parents and they asked for compensation. My mother asked me to admit my mistake without hesitation and carefully asked for the price. She didn't ask me for a reason.
At that time, I was full of grievances. Only when I grew up did I understand that in my parents' eyes, no matter how right the child was, it was always wrong to hurt someone.
"It should be discussed with the housekeeper." I paused, my gaze softening. "But I can give you a cup."
The middle-aged woman looked shocked and confused.
"I'm not used to using the cup in my room. I saw that the one you dropped was pretty good. If you like it, I'll give you one, but it won't be for free." I stood up and looked her in the eye. "Come to the mall with me later and help me look after Zachary."
The middle-aged woman was stunned for a moment before her eyes lit up. She hurriedly nodded. "Thank you. I'll definitely take good care of Mr. Parks."
Zachary blinked and held my hand. "Can I go to the mall too?"
I patted his head. "That's right. I'm going to take you to buy clothes and toys, okay?"
Zachary frowned slightly and held my hand tightly. He asked carefully, "I don't want to buy clothes. Can you take me to see Mommy? I want to go home. I miss Mommy."
For a moment, I didn't know how to comfort Zachary. After all, I had never coaxed a child much.
"Does Mom really not want me anymore?" Zachary suddenly raised his head with tears in his eyes and stared at me without blinking.
