Marvin stood there in stunned silence before snapping back to reality.
He knew about Jesse and Hallie because one night, when I was running a high fever and had no choice but to go out alone in the rain to buy medicine, I crossed paths with Marvin, who was rushing home after his tutoring session.
By the time I reached halfway down the street, I collapsed.
Marvin carried me to the hospital and stayed with me in the emergency room all night. Feverish and delirious, I clung to myself in a state of panic. That was when Marvin first heard about Jesse and Hallie.
"If anyone tries to hurt you again, make sure you hit back harder than they hit you."
At that time, Marvin was still in middle school, yet he understood that dealing with people like that meant being crazier than they were.
Even if it meant hurting yourself, it was the only way to keep from being pushed around. 'But I was terrified that, if I lost control, I might accidentally kill someone.'
More importantly, there were times when I saw Hallie's shadow in myself. And I even feared that, when pushed, I could be far more dangerous than she ever was.
So, I've been forcing down the darkness inside me all this time.
'The truth was, I wasn't just afraid of what Jesse and Hallie had done to me, but also of the dark side within myself that I could never quite shake.'
Then, I truly understood the meaning behind the saying, "Birds of a feather flock together." I was relieved I hadn't been around Jesse and Hallie for too long.
Marvin glanced around, his eyes filled with confusion. "It's been so many years. You can still recognize them?"
I smiled faintly, speaking slowly, "I might not recognize them, but that doesn't mean they can't recognize me. Besides, they came prepared."
At the mention of came prepared, Marvin furrowed his brow and scanned the room, his gaze sweeping over everyone present.
It wasn't until his eyes landed on Juliet that he looked back at me, his voice low. "The Woods family?"
I paused momentarily, then thoughtfully placed a hand on Marvin's shoulder. "Now I understand why your Michael didn't want you to become a cop."
"Wasn't that right?" Marvin asked.
"Jayden and Thelma are the same people as Jesse and Hallie."
"I guess I was right," Marvin said, raising an eyebrow, a hint of pride in his voice.
It was precisely his sharp insight that made him the most dangerous.
In investigations, the evidence matters, not just some gut feeling.
Marvin was relentless—once he had a suspicion, he wouldn't stop until he uncovered the truth.
I told him about Jayden and Thelma to keep him on edge.
"So, I was right. Why wouldn't I make a good cop?" Marvin asked, furrowing his brow in confusion.
"Because curiosity killed the cat."
I paused momentarily before continuing, "Thelma wants to marry into the Parks family."
Marvin kept his gaze fixed on me, unblinking. "Did she threaten you?"
I flashed a faint smile. "Do you think Thelma can still threaten me now?"
"Juliet was always difficult to deal with, and now she's with Jayden. It's probably not as simple as it seems."
Suddenly, Marvin seemed to realize something. "Maybe Jayden is the one she brought in to help her."
"Look into the connection between Jayden, Thelma, Juliet, and Rosemary," I mused for a moment, then added, "And also the previous victim and Leon."
Marvin nodded silently, thinking carefully before speaking. "So what's going on with you and Alex? You finally got rid of Helena, but now there's a new nurse on the scene. Aren't you worried?"
His eyes met mine, a teasing smile tugging at his lips as he continued, "Aren't you going to do something about it? Bailee's background is no joke."
"Do you know her?" I lifted my gaze and locked eyes with him.
Marvin's face immediately darkened, his expression turning uncomfortable. "You don't have feelings for Alex, do you?"
I shot him a glare. We discussed something important, and he suddenly shifted the topic to something irrelevant.
"Forget it, you're just being stubborn as usual. If you liked Alex, you wouldn't admit it," Marvin sighed in frustration. "But listen, don't get too caught up in his charm. A guy like him will be stolen away sooner or later."
"Alex's leg is ruined."
"Seriously?" Marvin froze, momentarily stunned, before taking a long gulp of his drink to steady himself.
His expression didn't change, but his voice dropped lower. "So, you suspect the crash wasn't an accident, right?"
"Isn't this case being handled by your friend, Alfie?" I glanced over at Jayden from a distance, a puzzled look on my face. "Why do their names sound so similar?"
"They're not the same, just spelled differently. There are plenty of people with the same name. What's so strange about that?" Marvin shrugged. "Alfie said he found out the bus had a brake failure when it crossed the bridge."
He paused, then added, "It seems like there's nothing wrong, but that's where the problem lies."
I agreed with Marvin's words, much like with Angela's accident.
If there were no apparent flaws, it meant there was something we'd overlooked.
While I couldn't be sure if the person who killed Angela were the same as the one who tried to kill Alex, their methods were undeniably similar. Their plan had no flaws—too bad Alex didn't die.
"Did Alex's leg get ruined?"
I thought about it for a moment. "Probably."
"Probably?" Marvin's eyes darkened, his voice lowering with suspicion. "So, is he planning to divorce you?"
Feeling a bitter taste, I paused momentarily and sipped the freshly squeezed juice in my glass.
"Marvin, if anything happens to me, just go back and be the cop you were meant to be."
Marvin's expression darkened, his clear black eyes flashing coldly. "Do you think I'm afraid of dying? Have you found something?"
I shook my head. "It's what hasn't been found that's the most terrifying. Every case looks like it has a clear start and finish, but what's going on behind the scenes?"
"If the mastermind is Maddox, what will you do?"
"Don't worry, I'm not a murderer," I said, shooting Marvin a cold look. "After all, murder is illegal."
Suddenly, the music in the living room stopped. All eyes turned toward the staircase as a man slowly descended.
When I saw his pale face, my mind went blank, but I could hear the rapid beat of my heart pounding in my chest.
