'I froze, not sure what Jayden was trying to do.'
"Sister?" I forced a smile, trying to remain calm. "You already have Thelma as your sister, and Blake as your brother. Why would you need me as your sister? What's in it for me?"
When I mentioned Blake's name, Jayden narrowed his eyes slightly, but his smile never faltered. Yet, there was an unmistakable chill in the expression that lingered on his face.
It was clear that he didn't seem to like Blake. He probably didn't even like Thelma all that much.
'Of course, he probably didn't like me that much either. If he had liked me, he wouldn't have spent so much time scaring me for his amusement when we were kids.'
'In his eyes, I was nothing more than a toy. But after all these years, I hadn't expected that Jayden's twisted nature hadn't changed.'
'Even that mischievous and pitiable child everyone saw back then was now even more terrifying. But sadly, I was no longer the naïve, shy girl I once was.'
Upon hearing my question, Jayden's face lit up with excitement. He stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.
"I don't like Thelma. She's always trying to cause trouble. She doesn't deserve to be my sister." He paused momentarily, as if reflecting, then added, "And Blake... I don't like him either. He's too fake. He acts fine with us, but we both know he doesn't care. He'll probably be dead soon anyway."
Jayden paused again, his eyes darkening. "I think you're the most suited. If you become my sister, I'll ensure no one hurts you. I'll be better than that useless husband of yours."
I frowned, keeping my tone flat. "So, will you let me go if I agree?"
"Of course," Jayden said without hesitation, releasing my wrist. "Laurel, I've always thought of you as my sister. If you listen to me, I'll protect you, and no one will ever hurt you again."
"Alright, I agree."
Jayden's face flickered with surprise, as if he hadn't expected me to agree to his request. But to my surprise, he did send someone to take Alex and me to the hospital.
"Doctor, how is Alex? Is his injury serious?"
When the emergency room doctor came out, I rushed forward, my hands instinctively gripping his white coat. My voice trembled as fear crept into my chest.
The doctor gave me a reassuring look. "Alex's fine. Initial checks show he's just unconscious. The wound's open, causing some blood loss. We've treated it, and he should be okay."
With that, he hurried back into the emergency room.
I lost track of time but hurried forward when the emergency room door finally opened. Alex was lying in the bed, his face deathly pale, his lips dry and cracked, devoid of any color.
About half an hour later, Alex stirred and slowly opened his eyes.
"Do you feel any pain?" I asked, gripping his cold hand, my voice filled with worry.
"Am I in the hospital?" Alex asked, pushing himself up.
I furrowed my brow. "How did you pass out?"
Alex froze for a moment, then rubbed his temple with a weary, confused look in his eyes. "I saw you getting into someone else's car, and I was about to call out to you..."
Before I could finish speaking, footsteps echoed outside the door, and Lawrence walked in.
"Alex, Mrs. Herrera, are you both alright?" he asked.
I shook my head. Surprisingly, Alex didn't press the issue this time. After all, kidnapping wasn't a one-time occurrence.
After we left the hospital, Alex, still shaken, insisted on staying with me at the Parks family, fearing something else might happen.
I was caught off guard the following day when Jayden and Thelma arrived at the Parks family.
Jayden looked as cold and handsome as ever, dressed in a sharp black suit. His deep-set eyes glinted with an almost icy intensity, making him seem untouchable.
Behind him, Thelma followed, and they entered together, one after the other.
Kailyn, spotting Jayden and Thelma, immediately greeted them with warmth.
"Thelma, Jayden said you'd be coming today. I was just about to ask him when you'd arrive. Didn't expect you to show up so soon!" Kailyn said, linking arms with Thelma, her face bright with a sweet smile.
'I couldn't help but be surprised. Didn't Kailyn always look down on Thelma? Has Celia convinced her to accept Thelma? Or is she just pretending?
I stood off to the side, my mind a whirl of mixed emotions. My hand instinctively gripped the hem of my dress, and I lowered my head slightly, avoiding Jayden's gaze. Once the pleasantries ended, I seized the opportunity and quietly pulled Jayden into a corner.
"What are you doing here? Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" I lifted my chin, locking eyes with Jayden, my brow furrowed in confusion.
"Not happy to see me?" Jayden grinned mischievously, giving my shoulder a light pat. "I've got to go, but I'll catch up with you later."
I watched as he turned and deliberately distanced us, a flicker of unease creeping into my chest.
Suddenly, Kailyn's mocking laugh echoed from behind me. "What were you doing just now, Laurel? Can't' stand Alex being a useless cripple, huh? Always looking for the next man—shameless!"
Kailyn's glare was venomous, her eyes filled with contempt.
My fists clenched so tightly my nails nearly dug into my palms as I met her glare and shot back coldly, "People with filthy minds see dirt everywhere. Don't you have a face? Or should I get you one?"
Kailyn exploded, her fury instant. She raised her hand, aiming to strike me.
But I was faster. I sidestepped and pushed Kailyn away with force.
She staggered, regaining her balance for a moment, but then, with a loud thud, she collapsed to the ground, a sharp, pitiful cry escaping her.
"Laurel, why did you push me?" Kailyn asked, feigning innocence, her eyes red, tilting her head back to glare at me.
"I pushed you?" I blinked, then let out a derisive laugh.
The room's attention shifted to us. Every gaze was fixed on the scene.
'My heart raced with frustration and anger. I couldn't explain myself, but I knew one thing—I couldn't expose my connection with Jayden. It would only bring more trouble.'
I took a deep breath to calm my rising anger and walked over to her, extending my hand to help. I kept my voice as gentle as I could. "It's my fault for not seeing you earlier, Kailyn, are you hurt? Should we take you to the hospital?"
Kailyn blinked, clearly caught off guard by my apology. But she seemed to catch on quickly, a smug look crossing her face as she shook her head.
She brushed off nonexistent dust from her clothes and flashed me a smile. "Laurel, you should be more careful next time."
Melody stepped forward, giving Kailyn a disapproving look. "Kailyn, Laurel already apologized. Don't make a big deal of it—she didn't mean to."
I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh inside. 'Kailyn's trying to stir things up, making everyone think I pushed her on purpose.'
I couldn't be bothered to argue. I forced a smile, an awkward expression pulling at my lips.
Maddox shot me a glance, his eyes briefly flicking with annoyance.
'I couldn't fight back, so I'd just avoid it.' With that, I turned and grabbed Zachary's arm, leading him out of the living room.
