Jayden's gaze locked onto me, a faint smile curling at the corners of his lips as he nodded slowly. "You're right. Everyone has their value."
"Then, what about Juliet? Does she hold value for you?"
'While trying to change the subject, I couldn't help but wonder what hidden secrets lay between them. And I couldn't shake the feeling that Jayden and Juliet were cut from the same cloth.'
'If those two were together, it would be a massive problem for Ivan. It would be the same for me.'
"You don't like her?"
"Whether I like her or not doesn't matter. What matters is that you do."
'Although Jayden was asking me, I knew he was testing me. The fact that he could kidnap me and threaten me with the safety of Sophina and Zachary meant one thing—he knew everything about me.'
'As he stood before me, I couldn't shake the feeling that he had thoroughly investigated every aspect of my life. Thankfully, I've never had any connection with Henry.'
"It seems I've overthought it," Jayden said, raising an eyebrow and speaking slowly, "How about I tell you a secret of mine? That way, it'll be fair."
'My hand instinctively tightened into a fist. I didn't want to know any of Jayden's secrets. After all, the more I learned, the quicker I'd be in danger. And besides, could Jayden's so-called secrets ever indeed be exposed?
"Laurel," a voice called from behind.
I turned to see Alex, leaning on his cane, standing in the doorway.
"Alex chose the wrong time to show up," Jayden said, turning to flash a smile at Alex, though a dangerous glint flickered in his eyes.
"Is there any fairness between us? Dinner's ready."
I approached Alex, calling for Sophina and Zachary to join us.
After lunch, Jayden and Thelma left the Parks residence.
As I watched their car drive away, a deep sigh of relief escaped me, and I collapsed onto the bed, feeling utterly drained.
Though Alex was staying at the Parks residence, he wasn't in the same room as me due to his leg injury. He was in the room next to mine.
Lawrence had been by his side, tending to him constantly.
Seeing the two of them inseparable, I couldn't help but wonder if Bailee had been just as dedicated to looking after him—spending every moment with him, around the clock.
With my nerves finally easing, I felt the exhaustion weighing on me. As I thought about catching up on some rest, Susan walked in.
"Mrs. Herrera, Mrs. Shepherd wants to see you in her room."
Since arriving at the Parks residence, Melody had been unusually warm toward me whenever Maddox was around.
She hadn't intentionally made things difficult for me. 'Except for today, when she helped Kailyn falsely accuse me. It seemed like she couldn't hold back any longer—or maybe she was waiting for the right opportunity?'
After all, with Alex now living at the Parks residence, she likely felt more cautious.
I took a deep breath, pushing aside the doubts and unease in my mind. Then, I stood and followed Susan into Melody's room.
Melody and Maddox had always slept in separate rooms, far from the image of the perfect, loving couple that people believed them to be.
'I couldn't tell whether Maddox had strong feelings for Melody, but it didn't seem good or bad either.'
An oppressive atmosphere hit me immediately as I stepped into Melody's room.
"Laurel," she broke the silence, her sharp gaze piercing me. "Do you know Jayden?"
I remained calm, my voice steady. "Jayden is Juliet's boyfriend. We crossed paths briefly at the hospital."
I paused, then looked at her directly, raising an eyebrow. "Is that the reason you called me here?"
Melody slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes narrowing like sharp, icy arrows. A cold chill crawled up my spine, freezing my chest.
But I held my ground, my face betraying no fear.
"Hmph, I can tell your relationship isn't as simple as it seems," she said, narrowing her eyes, her gaze fixed on me like a hook. Then her tone shifted, full of warning. "You're a daughter of the Parks family now. You need to be careful with your actions. Don't do anything that could embarrass yourself—or the family."
'I knew what she was doing—trying to embarrass me in front of everyone while showing off her authority as the head of the Parks family. I'd never been intimidated by her little act. It was just a matter of time before I found the right moment to deal with her—until today, she had given me that chance.'
A mocking smile tugged at my lips. "Alex's right here. When did it become your turn to lecture me? Instead of wasting your time on me, maybe you should focus on Kailyn. She has no useful skill, just running around stirring up trouble."
At my words, Melody shot up from the couch, fury flashing across her face before she forced a smile, cold and malicious. "Figures, you're just as disrespectful as I thought—no manners at all."
I frowned, not bothering to think twice before quickly stepping toward her.
Seeing my movement, Melody's hand shot out, grabbing my wrist, and she shouted with a rasped voice, "You ungrateful girl! How dare you lay hands on your elder?"
"Elder? What makes you think you're one?"
"Slap!" Without hesitation, I raised my other hand and delivered a sharp, resounding slap to her face.
The sharp sound echoed through the room, and blood immediately welled at the corner of Melody's mouth.
She stood there stunned, clearly not expecting me to strike back.
"Such a lack of manners. Today, I'll teach you some respect—on behalf of Yvette."
Furious and embarrassed, Melody pushed me, trying to make me lose my balance.
But I was quick on my feet, raising my hand to block her and sidestepping just in time.
She overestimated her strength, losing her balance and crashing to the ground in a heap.
"Someone!" Melody gasped, her voice hoarse with rage.
As soon as the words left her mouth, two servants rushed in.
'I instinctively stepped back, a cold smile curling on my lips. It seemed Melody had planned this all along, taking advantage of Maddox and Alex being out of the house to teach me a lesson.'
'Too bad for her, she picked the wrong opponent. Today, she's hit a wall.'
"I'm carrying a child from the Herrera family. What do you think you're doing?"
The two servants barely acknowledged me, their footsteps steady as they advanced toward me.
'My heart sank. I hadn't expected Melody to act so quickly. I figured Alex's presence must have threatened her, afraid I might take Maddox's attention away from Kailyn.'
"What... what do you want from me?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly, my face twisting into a mask of fear.
The room fell eerily silent.
The two servants firmly gripped my arms.
"Let go of me!" I yelled, my voice rising.
Melody settled back onto the couch, wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth, her lips curling into a cold, mocking smile. "Do you think anyone's coming to save you?"
