Back in my room, I took off my jacket wearily. My entire body ached like fine needles pricking my muscles.
However, I was in a very good mood. The image of Melody's flustered and exasperated look lingered in my mind. I could not help but smile.
When I thought of my mother, my heart ached. Back then, she disregarded her family's dissuasion and resolutely married into the Parks family. She had thought that she could find happiness, but it turned out to be a lifetime of misfortune.
If she hadn't married into the Parks family, she might have been able to live a different life.
"Knock, knock, knock." Someone suddenly knocked on the door.
When I opened the door, Susan stood there uneasily. Her eyes were filled with guilt and unease. Her fingers twisted the corner of her blouse uneasily as she stammered, "Ms. Parks, I'm-I'm sorry."
Her gaze was evasive, her eyes filled with guilt.
How could I not understand her difficulties? In the Parks family, I was just an outsider staying here. To earn more medical fees, she dared not offend Melody.
She folded her hands in front of her chest and trembled slightly. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something but hesitated.
"Come in." I stepped aside to let her in.
Susan came in and saw my blood-stained clothes. She panicked. "Ms. Parks, are you injured? I have some ointment. I'll get it."
"No need." I looked up and gave her a warm smile. "This blood isn't mine."
Susan looked up in surprise and quickly lowered her head. "Ms. Parks, I'm sorry."
Looking at her reddened eyes, I could only comfort her. "You just apologized. Even if you had helped me, Melody wouldn't let you off."
Susan's eyes were filled with tears as she looked at me in a daze and then sized me up. She was filled with worry. "Ms. Parks, are you injured?"
"I'm fine," I whispered.
Other than the fact that my arms were a little sore from being held down by the two servants, I was not injured.
Susan frowned and quickly said, "Ms. Parks, let me fill the bathtub for you."
"Okay." I nod.
When she heard this, she was stunned for a moment. A smile appeared on her face as she quickly walked into the bathroom.
Actually, Susan did not know that after the Woods siblings left, the butler secretly sent a note to me, telling me to leave the Parks family's residence.
After Maddox and Alex left, Melody's expression became vicious. I guessed that she would make things difficult for me, but I didn't expect her to have the guts to attack my child and even force me to take the abortion medicine. She was really vicious.
The butler kindly wanted me to leave the house, but I couldn't hide forever. I wanted to see what other tricks Melody could play.
After taking a shower, I was about to take a nap when there was a commotion outside.
I walked to the window sill and saw Rebecca getting out of the car unsteadily with the help of the servants. Her walking stick tapped the ground, making a dull sound.
My heart sank. It seemed that Melody had called for reinforcements.
There was a knock on the door again. When I opened the door, I saw the servant in the kitchen with a pale face. She said in a trembling voice, "Ms. Parks, Mrs.-Mrs. Rebecca Parks asked me to call you down."
I replied calmly, "Alright, let me clean up first."
The servant nodded heavily and hurried away. She acted as if I would attack her if she left a little slower.
It seemed that all the servants in the house were afraid of me now.
Thinking about it carefully, it made sense. After all, the two servants who provoked me were both seriously injured.
I slowly went downstairs and saw that Ruth, who had already woken up from my beating, had her head wrapped in gauze. She was crying. "Mrs. Rebecca Parks, Ms. Parks hit us indiscriminately. Ouch, my head was hit by her."
Rebecca was sitting on the sofa with a grim expression. When she saw me coming down, she bellowed angrily, "Bow and apologize to your mother!"
With a confused expression, I looked at Rebeca, who was sitting on the sofa, with a faint smile. "Grandma, don't you know my mother is dead? Or did she follow you here?"
After saying that, I looked around. Rebecca's expression froze, and she stared at me with a burning gaze. "You've returned to the Parks family. Since Melody is your father's wife, she is your mother. You're used to being wild, and you even dare to hurt people now. Since she can't take you in hand, I will."
Melody sat at the side. Her eyes were red as she leaned weakly toward Rebecca. "Mother, don't be angry. You have a weak heart and can't get worked up."
Then, she looked at me and said earnestly, "Laurel, just bow and admit your mistake, and this matter will be over."
There was a flash of triumph in her eyes. She thought she had me in her pocket.
Rebecca said, "Unfilial daughter! Aren't you going to bow?"
I only felt ridiculous when I looked at Rebecca's furious expression. She didn't even ask anything before telling me to apologize.
"I didn't expect your mother to teach you to be so arrogant. If I don't do anything today, I don't know what trouble you will cause in the future."
I stared at Rebecca without changing my expression. "Grandma, you're asking me to apologize without even asking if I was the one who hit them."
Rebecca was stunned for a moment. She snorted and said coldly, "The wound on Ruth's head couldn't have been caused by herself. How dare you not own up to it?"
I looked straight at Rebecca with a frank gaze. "I was indeed the one who hit her. However, Ruth was disrespectful and even hit me. I was just defending myself. As for Melody, is she worthy of being my mother?"
I sneered, and Melody's face turned pale. She was about to speak when Rebecca raised her hand to stop her.
"How dare you! In the Parks family, the words of an elder are the rules." Rebecca stomped her walking stick hard. "Your mother passed away early. Melody disciplined you, but you hit her. Ruth wanted to discipline you, but you beat her up. I'll teach you the rules on your mother's behalf today."
I stared at Rebecca and glanced at the servants present. I sneered. "Grandma, since you follow the rules, then may I ask if it's wrong for me to protect my unborn child when someone wants to harm him and chase me out of the Parks family?"
As soon as I said that, Melody widened her eyes and stared at me in disbelief. She shook her head helplessly and sighed. "Laurel, I didn't expect you to say such things."
"Mrs. Rebecca Parks, don't listen to her nonsense." Ruth looked at me angrily as she spoke. "Ms. Parks, Mrs. Melody Parks only reminded you not to get too close to other men since you're already married. You flew into a rage out of humiliation and slapped her. How could you slander her now?"
Melody said, "Laurel, have I made things difficult for you since you returned to the Parks family? I treated you and Kailyn like my own children, but I didn't expect you to hate me so much."
Melody took a deep breath and looked at me with disappointment. "There were so many people present. Someone saw you hit Ruth and destroy my room. I didn't want to make a fuss about this at first, but if you do the same in the Herrera family in the future, it will ruin the Parks family's reputation."
