Rebecca tapped her walking stick on the ground hard. "Laurel, apologize."
Seeing that I still didn't move, Rebecca's wrinkled face looked gloomy. Her gaze was cold, and the corners of her mouth turned down slightly, revealing an authoritative aura that couldn't be defied. She gave Margie Howard, who was standing at the side, a look.
Margie understood. She straightened her wrinkled clothes, took a deep breath, and walked straight to me.
In an instant, the air seemed to freeze. Margie's calloused hand suddenly rose high up and was about to slap my face hard.
At this critical moment, a shout came from behind.
Everyone turned around in shock and saw Alex sitting in a wheelchair. He was dressed in black, and his face was pale, but it could not hide his coldness. His gaze was icy as he stared at the people sitting in the room.
The dignified expression that Melody had carefully maintained instantly collapsed, revealing a hint of surprise. She subconsciously grabbed the armrest of the sofa, as if she did not expect Alex to return so quickly and ruin her carefully planned plan.
At the same time, Lawrence quickly walked up to me.
His eyes were filled with determination as he slapped Margie's face.
A crisp sound echoed in the silent space.
He had held back on the slap, or Margie would have collapsed long ago. Even so, Margie's right cheek was still visibly swollen, and her eyes were filled with shock and anger as she staggered back a few steps.
"You..." Margie's shrill and trembling voice was filled with anger and tears. But when she saw Alex's terrifying gaze behind Lawrence, she could only retreat timidly to Rebecca's side to seek protection.
When Rebecca saw that her subordinate had been slapped, her well-maintained hand gripped her walking stick tightly. Her knuckles turned white, and a trace of anger flashed across her eyes. She raised her head slightly and looked at Lawrence sharply. She said coldly, "How dare you hurt someone in the Parks family's residence?"
Lawrence looked at Rebecca fearlessly and said calmly, "Mrs. Rebecca Parks, Mrs. Herrera saved my life. If anyone dares to hit her, I definitely won't let them off. It wouldn't only be a slap if she weren't working for the Parks family."
Melody gritted her teeth and looked at Alex with a dark expression. She explained, "Alex, Laurel caused trouble and beat people, so Mrs. Rebecca Parks was only teaching her the rules."
Alex slowly raised his head and looked at me. There was a trace of imperceptible concern in his eyes as he smiled.
He did not ask what had happened. He only looked indifferently at Ruth, who was wrapped in gauze.
After thinking for a moment, he said, "What's done is done. I can still afford the medical fees. However, if someone dear to me is beaten, it won't only be a matter of medical fees. Lawrence, give 300 thousand dollars to everyone who was beaten up. Mrs. Rebecca Parks, is the compensation enough?"
His voice was not loud, but it was unquestionable.
However, I was filled with indignation. My chest heaved violently, my hands clenched into fists, and my nails dug into my palms.
"Why should they be compensated? I was slapped, too." My gaze fell on Ruth's face. She was obviously stunned and looked terrified.
However, I turned to look at Rebecca and slowly said, "Grandma, you wanted me to bow and apologize without asking me why I beat them. I told you someone wanted to chase me out of the Parks family and even wanted to kill my unborn child, but you didn't believe me.
"Yet, you believe these people's one-sided words. Don't you know who the people here obey?"
Melody stood up from the sofa with a heartbroken expression. "Laurel, how could you say that about me? If you don't like me disciplining you in the future, I won't—"
"Don't be in a hurry to explain. I can produce evidence to prove who's lying," I interrupted Melody and stared straight at her with a mocking smile.
Upon hearing the word "evidence", Melody's eyes widened, and her face turned pale.
However, in the next second, she regained her composure.
Perhaps she thought that I couldn't possibly have any evidence.
After all, when I entered her room, I didn't have a phone with me, nor did I have any recording device.
"Evidence? Then show me," Melody said.
Just as I was about to speak, a servant suddenly fell to the ground.
Her body trembled as she said shakily, "Mr. Herrera, it was Ruth's idea. It's all her fault."
Everyone's eyes were on her. Ruth's eyes widened in disbelief.
The living room fell into dead silence. Only the sound of everyone's breathing could be heard.
Outside the window, the night was as dark as velvet, and dark clouds obscured the stars and moon.
Raindrops began to patter on the window frame.
Alex narrowed his eyes slightly and looked at the servant trembling on the ground. After a moment, he said softly, "Tell me clearly what happened."
He stared straight at the servant, his deep eyes revealing a bone-chilling coldness.
The servant was so frightened that she bowed profusely. "Mr. Herrera. Ruth has always doted on Miss Parks. She's jealous that Ms. Parks came back and usurped Miss Parks' identity.
"Today, Ms. Parks pushed Miss Parks, so Ruth discussed with us to teach Ms. Parks a lesson. She wanted to force Ms. Parks to take the medicine and then—"
Before the servant could finish speaking, Ruth screamed and pounced on her. "You're talking nonsense. I didn't do that at all."
The two of them instantly fought, and the living room was in chaos.
Rebecca was so angry that her chest heaved up and down. She tapped her walking stick hard on the ground, making a dull sound. "Stop!"
The servants instantly stopped as if they had been cast a spell.
Rebecca swept her gaze across the crowd and finally fixed it on Melody. "Is this how you manage the household?"
Melody lowered her head and did not dare to look at her directly.
She stammered, "Mother, I-I didn't know it would be like this. I only called Laurel into my room and told her to keep a distance from other men. I didn't expect her to hit me. I wanted Ruth to teach her some manners. Later on, Kailyn wasn't feeling well, so I—"
"Shut up!" Rebecca hit Melody hard with her walking stick.
I sneered inwardly. Rebecca was putting on an act in front of us.
However, I was a little surprised. Why did that servant suddenly come forward and admit that all of this was instigated by Ruth? How would she know that the evidence I was referring to was the medicine that had yet to be disposed of?
"Mrs. Melody Parks, do you think my wife will betray me?" Alex smiled and looked at Melody. He sighed and said slowly, "She hit you? That's considered a light punishment. After all, it's not a good thing to ruin one's reputation. Moreover, I've always been protective."
Seeing that I still didn't move, Rebecca's wrinkled face looked gloomy. Her gaze was cold, and the corners of her mouth turned down slightly, revealing an authoritative aura that couldn't be defied. She gave Margie Howard, who was standing at the side, a look.
