I froze for a moment, noticing Sophina's tense expression. "What happened to Kailyn?" I asked, feeling puzzled.
Sophina whispered, "Kailyn was rushed to the hospital. They said her condition was really bad when she got there."
My heart skipped a beat as I thought back to that heartbreaking scream.
Sophina added, "The maid who was taking care of Kailyn went to the hospital with her and hasn't come back yet."
"Are you sure?" I asked, feeling skeptical.
Sophina glanced around to make sure no one was nearby, then lowered her voice to continue, "But Kailyn doesn't seem sick to me. She acts so arrogant and condescending every day."
I thought for a moment, then said, "Being sick is a pretty normal thing; there's no need to make a big deal out of it."
Sophina was silent for a moment, then added, "But what's strange is this: they say Kailyn's illness is serious, yet Melody is still at home. She hasn't gone to the hospital yet."
I paused, slightly taken aback—it did not quite add up.
If it was just a minor illness, there was no need for the maid to accompany Kailyn to the hospital. But if it was really that serious, why hadn't Melody gone with Kailyn?
"Is Kailyn sick?" Zachary asked, tilting his head curiously.
"Yes, that's why you need to eat well so you don't get sick, Zachary." As I softly patted Zachary's head, I noticed how his face was becoming fuller, and I could not help but pinch his cheek lightly.
"Take Zachary downstairs, Sophina, I'll be down in a bit," I said.
Sophina nodded and turned, leading Zachary down the stairs.
Kailyn's room was on the third floor, and I noticed Alex and Maddox playing chess in the living room downstairs.
Since it was almost dinner time, Melody was probably already in the dining room.
I made my way to the elevator and went straight to the third floor.
The third floor was eerily quiet. The lights were on, but the stillness in the air gave off a chilling, almost sinister vibe.
I walked toward Kailyn's room.
The room was spotless and pristine, with not a speck of dust in sight.
It seemed that after Kailyn had left, the maids had cleaned the room again.
Yet, despite this, I could still smell a faint hint of blood.
I felt a tightness in my chest, and a strange sense of unease washed over me.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps outside the door.
I turned off my phone screen and hid behind the door, overhearing a chat between two maids.
"Will Miss Parks be back today?"
"Of course not! Her health has been compromised this time. Who knows if she will be okay."
"Don't you feel like something's off today, Yasmine? Do you think this is karma? Mrs. Parks originally wanted to harm Miss Laurel Park's baby, but in the end..."
"Keep your thoughts to yourself. Pick up your things and go downstairs before someone sees you."
As their footsteps faded into the distance, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Recalling their words and the lingering smell of blood in the room, I could not shake the thought—had Kailyn miscarried?
But why doesn't Melody want the family to know about this? Could it be that the child isn't Austin's?
With that question in mind, I went downstairs.
Melody did not bring up the incident of me hitting her in front of Maddox.
It was as if nothing had happened today, like it was all just a dream.
But how could Maddox not know? Rebecca must have already filled him in on everything before she left.
Yet, Melody acted as usual, still greeting me with a smile. It truly sent a chill down my spine.
The whole atmosphere during the meal was as bizarre as it could get.
Not a word was said about the missing Kailyn, and even Isaac, who usually adored Kailyn, seemed entirely indifferent to her absence.
It was not until dinner was nearly over that Maddox gave Isaac a meaningful look and asked, "What do you think about Thelma Woods? If all goes well, let's settle the marriage between our families. You're not getting any younger."
Melody quickly chimed in, "Yeah, Thelma seems great."
Isaac glanced at me. "Laurel, what do you think of Thelma?"
My hand tightened around the fork. I was surprised by Isaac's question.
My head throbbed slightly as I thought about Thelma's personality, which I knew all too well.
When I was younger, my mother had bought me a teddy bear. Thelma liked it so much that she snatched it and played with it for a long time.
But when Thelma returned it to me, I found that she had cut it all over with scissors.
She smiled and said a broken bear suited me best.
Thelma was an ambitious and terrifying woman.
If she could not have something, she would rather destroy it.
Melody wanted Isaac to marry Thelma because of the latter's seemingly fragile appearance. Melody believed that Thelma could be easily controlled.
Despite Thelma's abilities, she was just an adopted daughter of the Woods family.
If Thelma was lucky, after Blake's death, the Woods Group might fall into her hands. But ultimately, Thelma would have to rely on the Parks family.
With the support of the Parks family, Thelma would have a real chance of taking the CEO position in the future.
But Maddox's calculations were off—he seemed to forget that Thelma had an older brother, Jayden.
Even if Blake passed away, the Woods family would not possibly hand everything over to Thelma.
The decision to pass on the power to Thelma was so that she could help Blake in the future. In the end, it was all about making use of Thelma.
The reason Jayden did not join the Woods Group was that he simply did not want to. He decided to launch his own toy business, which was performing at an average level—neither thriving nor struggling.
But only I knew that Jayden, with his greed, would never settle for small gains.
He was definitely involved in some secret business.
Jayden chose to keep a low profile to protect himself, giving him more time and resources to do what he wanted.
That way, his adoptive parents would lower their guard against him.
I could also sense that Jayden harbored both disgust and fear toward Blake.
I was genuinely intrigued by the person who could install such fear in someone like Jayden.
"All that matters is that you like her, Isaac." I smiled at Isaac and added, "After all, you're going to be spending the rest of your life with her. You have to think carefully about it."
Isaac nodded and smiled. "When you got married, did you ever think that you'd be spending the rest of your life with Alex?"
I was slightly taken aback. Just as I was about to respond, Kailyn suddenly entered. Her face was ashen white, and she glared at me with such malice in her eyes that it seemed like she wanted to kill me.
