Kailyn stormed toward me, but Melody quickly grabbed her arm. "Kailyn, didn't I tell you to stay at the hospital for the night? Why are you back so soon?"
"Mom, it's all her fault!" Kailyn snapped, her voice filled with resentment.
I looked at Kailyn in confusion. "What did I do?"
Melody tightly grasped Kailyn's arm and quickly said, "Kailyn isn't feeling well. I'll take her upstairs first."
Kailyn clearly did not want to go, but Melody's firm grip left her no choice. Kailyn's anger seemed to ease, but as she turned to leave, she shot me a cold smirk.
Something about it sent a chill down my spine.
Melody took Kailyn upstairs, but she was gone for quite a while.
Just as I was about to leave, Melody rushed back to her seat, looking tense and out of breath.
"Since Ruth made a mistake, I had to let her go. That's why Kailyn's upset," Melody explained.
The room was filled with an unspoken understanding—no one mentioned why Ruth had left.
Instead, the conversation shifted back to Isaac and Thelma's upcoming marriage.
Isaac's expression remained icy—he clearly was not interested in Thelma.
And why would he? With his wealth and status, he could have any woman he wanted. Why settle for her?
Maddox had not expected Isaac's rejection, and his face darkened.
"I'm giving you one month. If you don't find someone yourself, we'll make the decision for you. You're not getting any younger. Don't tell me you're planning to stay single until you're 40?" Maddox said.
He let out a scoff and glanced at me before delivering another blow to Isaac. He said, "Your sisters are both expecting. Kailyn's wedding to Austin is already set for the end of the year. I'm warning you—don't be the one holding everyone back."
Maddox shot a cold glance at Isaac, who remained silent, before adding, "I'm giving you a month off. Our family's moving to Nifelheim City, and the project there is set to begin construction next month. I don't want anything to go wrong, do you hear me?"
"Yes," Isaac said.
Isaac knew there was no way out—he had no choice but to agree to Maddox's decision.
But how could Isaac possibly find a wife in just one month?
I had never realized that even our family fell victim to arranged marriages, just like everyone else in high society.
Marrying within one's social class was not necessarily a bad thing, but the real challenge was spending an entire lifetime loving that person.
And finding such a person within a month? That was wishful thinking.
Even if Isaac did manage to find someone he loved, that woman would still have to be the right match in terms of status.
Thelma was Melody's pick, and only Melody truly understood the gains and losses that came with that choice.
If Isaac's chosen partner did not win Maddox and Melody's approval, then all his efforts would be wasted.
They claimed to be giving him a chance, but was it really one?
In the end, it was nothing more than a strategic move to back Isaac into a corner.
"I know a few suitable candidates. Want me to introduce them to your brother?" Alex asked.
"Really?" I looked at Alex, and for the first time, a faint smile touched his usually cold features.
Alex asked, "Does your brother seriously not have a girlfriend? Or even a casual fling? After all, he's not young anymore..."
I raised an eyebrow, letting out a soft laugh. "What about you? Before you got married, were there no women throwing themselves at you?"
Alex's smile immediately disappeared as he answered seriously, "I have an obsession with cleanliness."
I could not stop myself from sneering inwardly.
Does he really? I don't see any sign of that. Women come and go around him, and even after marriage, Alex still doesn't seem to lack company. And those were just the public affairs. Who knows how many secret flings he's got going on?
Although I felt a little upset, I did not let a hint of displeasure show on my face.
After all, when I married Alex, I was also drawn to his looks and wealth. I could not exactly stop others from having the same desires.
I looked away and said lightly, "Forget it. Anyway, even if Isaac does bring a woman home, she might not be able to gain Maddox's approval."
"Laurel, looks like you know your father very well." Alex's deep voice carried a hint of amusement as his dark, intense eyes locked onto mine.
He wore a black shirt, his sharp, chiseled features giving off an air of unattainable, restrained allure.
"Didn't you notice? Maddox's afraid of his wife," Alex said.
As soon as he said that, Alex could not help but chuckle. "Actually, I'm the same too."
I glanced at him briefly, keeping my tone neutral. "I can't tell."
A brief look of disappointment crossed Alex's face. "You can't tell? I thought I made it pretty obvious."
"You can head back to your room now. I'm going to sleep," I said.
"Go ahead and sleep, I'm just going to take a shower. I'll be in soon," Alex said.
I stiffened slightly. "You don't have to accompany me."
Alex paused for a moment as he adjusted the wheelchair, his tone relaxed as he said, "But I want you to accompany me."
Before I could even react, he closed the door behind him and left.
I sighed in resignation and lay on the bed.
But it was not even five minutes before the door was opened again.
A figure walked in.
The air carried a faint smell of tobacco mixed with floral notes.
I furrowed my brows slightly and sat up, meeting Isaac's gaze as I said softly, "What's the matter?"
Isaac met my gaze and said, "We need to talk."
Without waiting for me to speak, he walked over and sat down on the nearby sofa, his expression dark.
"You know, you could have just refused," I said, sitting across from Isaac, speaking without hesitation.
Isaac gave a small smile, taking a deep breath, seemingly trying to calm his frustrated mood.
"I just want to talk to you about what happened today," he said.
I had not expected Isaac to know about today's events, but it made sense.
After all, he had lived here for so many years, and having his own people here was nothing out of the ordinary.
"Are you here to lecture me on behalf of Dad?" I asked, looking at Isaac with mild interest.
Isaac was quite good-looking, but in a different way from Alex. He lacked the sharp, intimidating presence that Alex carried.
Instead, Isaac had a smile that put one at ease.
Although Isaac looked a lot like Maddox, his features had a clear resemblance to our mother, especially when he smiled.
"No."
Isaac's answer made me secretly heave a sigh of relief.
I did not want to complicate things with him since he was my brother and the person my mother always felt remorse for all these years.
"I know you hate everyone in the Parks family," Isaac said, locking eyes with me, his tone carrying an unmistakable warning. "But I hope you won't hurt Kailyn."
