After saying that, Isaac turned away resolutely and exited my room.
At that instant, I felt a pang of sorrow in my chest.
I knew all too well that in Isaac's eyes, Kailyn was the sister he cherished above all else.
Even though Isaac and I were bound by blood, that connection alone could not bridge the distance between us.
After all, Isaac had spent over 20 years with Kailyn. How could he possibly feel any affection for me?
I never expected to hold an important place in his heart or receive any affection from him.
But I never expected that Isaac would have sided with Kailyn so completely, without hesitation.
Given that he knew Kailyn was upset today, he must have known what had happened.
However, he turned a blind eye to it and refused to say anything about it.
I let out a quiet sigh, a wry smile tugging at the corners of my lips.
Whatever. If Isaac wants to be this cold and distant, then so be it. At least it helps ease the guilt I've been carrying.
"You alright?" Suddenly, a lazy voice came through the receiver, laced with amusement.
I quickly masked my surprise, keeping my tone steady. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"That's my girl. Bold enough to go after someone from Melody's side."
Jayden chuckled smugly, his laughter creeping into my ears and making me involuntarily shiver.
After a moment of silence, I could not help but ask, "What exactly did you do?"
If Jayden already knew I had gone after Melody's people, it could only mean one thing—he had spies planted within the Parks family.
But who exactly is feeding Jayden information? What's his real purpose in having his people planted so deeply within the Parks family?
Jayden let out a light cough, his tone leisurely yet firm. "Relax. No one will lay a finger on you. And if they try, I'll make sure they pay dearly for it."
"What are you trying to say?" My brows tightened as an inexplicable frustration surged through me.
Images of Kailyn's ghostly pale face and the seething hatred in her eyes surfaced in my mind.
Jayden's laugh echoed through the silence—low, amused, yet carrying an eerie sharpness, like unseen predators circling their prey.
"What did you do to Kailyn? Aren't you afraid that Melody will come after you?" I asked, raising my voice.
"Relax," Jayden said lightly. "If she dares come after you, I'll make sure she's out of the picture—permanently. How does that sound?"
I said nothing. Jayden was absolutely insane. If something really happened to Melody, there was no doubt he would drag me down with him.
"You won't kill her," I said bluntly, taking a deep breath. "Not yet, anyway."
Jayden was silent for a few seconds on the other end of the call before bursting into laughter. "You know me too well, Laurel. Melody, that two-faced woman, deserves to be tormented. Bit by bit, we'll destroy everything she holds dear.
"And just imagine—her own daughter being the one to finish her off. Now, wouldn't that be a sight?"
His voice was soft and almost soothing, but his words were laced with cruelty.
"Do as you please. That's your business, not mine," I replied coolly, though deep down, I felt a sense of relief.
Jayden let out an exaggerated sigh. "Oh? Are you mad? Don't you like the idea of Thelma becoming your sister-in-law?"
"You don't like it either, do you?" I countered.
Jayden's laughter cut off instantly.
After a brief pause, he spoke again, his voice low and husky. "Looks like you're still the one who understands me best."
I could not help but scoff inwardly. If Thelma were to marry into the Parks family, she would only become another obstacle in Jayden's path.
There was no way Jayden would let Thelma join forces with Melody.
After ending the call, I suddenly realized that my hand, still gripping the phone, was ice-cold.
Looking up, I saw Alex in his wheelchair, pushing the door open and entering the room.
"Were you waiting for me?" he asked, a trace of curiosity flickering in his eyes.
I walked toward him and said gently, "You don't have to go out of your way to keep me company."
"But I want you to accompany me," Alex said. His words made my heart skip a beat. I was not sure whether I should feel happy or worried.
I took a deep breath, trying to play it off casually. "I'm worried I'll disturb you at night."
Alex smiled, then stood up from his wheelchair and sat on the bed. "How about I give you a massage?"
Instinctively, I reached for the inside of his thigh. The next second, my breath hitched, and it felt as though I had been electrocuted. I yanked my hand away in a panic.
Just as I was flustered, unsure of how to explain myself, Alex's voice, low and laced with temptation, pierced the air. "What were you trying to do?"
I looked up, flustered, and found myself caught in Alex's gaze—his face so unnervingly handsome it seemed almost unreal. Alex gazed at me with a knowing smile, his eyes reflecting no emotion whatsoever.
"Forget it. I'm going to sleep. I'm really tired," I mumbled awkwardly, diving under the covers in a hurry.
The next morning, I woke up to find that Alex was already gone.
After freshening up, I made my way to the living room, where everyone had already gathered around the dining table—except for Kailyn, who was nowhere to be seen.
After breakfast, Alex mentioned that he would like to take me back to Nifelheim City.
Maddox gave a slight nod in approval. He did not have any objections.
After all, I had been staying with the Parks family for a while now, and it would not be right to overstay my welcome.
"Are you going to leave me, Laurel?" Zachary's pitiful voice filled the room as he clung to me, pouting and looking at me with a sad expression.
Maddox cleared his throat and said calmly, "If you want to go with Laurel, that's fine, but you have to promise to behave and listen to her."
Zachary nodded quickly, his excitement clear in every movement.
"It's probably not a good idea for Laurel to take Zachary with her," Melody said. "After all, Zachary's still part of the Parks family, and if he leaves with Laurel, people might think that I can't accept having him around."
The air seemed to freeze, the tension almost unbearable.
I was taken aback—Melody had always been dismissive of Zachary, the illegitimate child, often wishing he were gone.
Even with Zachary staying with them, Melody did not have an opportunity to make a move. So is Melody afraid that if I take him, she'll lose all her chances completely?
Thinking back to what happened yesterday, I felt that it made sense. If I had two more people helping me, it would be much harder for her to make a move.
At that moment, Zachary suddenly burst into tears, running toward me and clinging to my arm. "Are you going to leave me too, Laurel? I want to find my mommy..."
"Looking for your mommy?" Kailyn's voice cut through the air. I turned to see her standing at the foot of the stairs, a cold smirk on her lips. She sauntered toward the table, her tone laced with mockery. "Didn't they tell you? She's abandoned you."
Melody rushed to Kailyn's side. "You shouldn't be out of bed. What are you doing down here?" Her face tightened in anger as she gestured sharply to the nearby servant. "Yasmine, help her back upstairs immediately!"
At that instant, I felt a pang of sorrow in my chest.
