"I'm fine. I don't want to stay cooped up in my room," Kailyn said, suddenly flinging her arm and knocking Yasmine off balance.
Kailyn's eyes smoldered with contempt and mockery as she shot a sideways glance at Zachary. "What are you crying for? You want to go with her? Hmph, maybe you'll be dead before you even make it to Nifelheim City," she said viciously.
Without thinking, I stood up and placed myself firmly in front of Zachary, locking my gaze on Kailyn.
I had no idea what was going on with Kailyn today—was she done pretending?
After all, Kailyn had been doted on by the Parks family her entire life—when had she ever suffered like this?
Not only had I taken the man she dreamed of marrying, but now I was here at the Parks Villa.
She thought I wanted to take everything that belonged to her, but she was wrong.
What I wanted was not just the Parks Group, I intended to make Melody lose everything.
Kailyn suddenly raised her hand and swung it toward my face.
I braced myself, refusing to dodge, and took the slap head-on.
The sharp "smack" rang out. My cheek burned with pain while my head throbbed.
Half of my face swelled rapidly, and I could taste the iron tang of blood in my mouth.
Just as Kailyn was about to hurl more insults, Melody was on her in a flash, delivering a fierce slap across her back.
Melody's face was flushed red with anger, veins popping from her forehead as she shouted, "You little brat, you've gone too far this time!"
Melody then called for the servants. "Take her back to her room and lock her up. She needs to reflect on her behavior!"
The servants, trembling with fear, quickly grabbed Kailyn, who was still struggling, out of the room.
Maddox remained seated, his face dark with fury.
With a loud "bang," he slammed his hand onto the table, glaring at Melody, and shouted, "Look at the daughter you've raised! She dares to strike someone in front of me, has she lost all sense of propriety?"
He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling violently as he shakily pointed at Melody. "For now, Zachary will go with Laurel to Nifelheim City. You and Kailyn will not be coming with me to Nifelheim City.
"Moreover, Dad's health is poor, so you guys should remain in Wadiff City."
With that, Maddox swung his sleeve in frustration and stormed out, leaving the room in complete silence.
Melody stood there, shocked, unable to process the sudden turn of events. Her lips quivered, but no words came out.
I was momentarily stunned, feeling that everything in front of me seemed somewhat unreal.
Zachary cautiously raised his hand and touched my swollen cheek. His eyes welled with tears as he sobbed, "Let's not play with Kailyn anymore. I don't like her anymore."
Zachary's tender touch pulled me out of my daze. I gently grasped his hand and nodded slightly.
When Isaac got up to leave, his footsteps faltered for a moment. He gave me a complicated glance before leaving the room.
Just as I was feeling a bit lost and helpless, my phone suddenly chimed, breaking the silence.
I checked the message, and to my surprise, there was a bank notification saying my account had been credited with 300 thousand dollars.
I was momentarily stunned, and a bitter smile formed on my lips. This slap had certainly proven to be quite "valuable."
To make it easier for me to care for Zachary, Maddox had Susan and Drew follow me back to Nifelheim City.
I pulled myself together and asked Sophina to handle the packing. Then I turned to Alex, who was sitting in his wheelchair, and asked softly, "Why the sudden decision to go back to Nifelheim City? Is there an issue with the company?"
Alex looked down, avoiding my gaze, and replied coolly, "There's company business to attend to, but I don't feel assured to leave you here."
His fingers lightly tapped the armrest of the wheelchair, the rhythm sounding a bit off.
I studied him, and my intuition told me he was not being honest.
From what I had heard from Gideon, after Alex was injured, the Nifelheim City branch was handed over to Austin.
Unexpectedly, shortly after Austin took over, he made drastic changes, firing many of Alex's staff and placing his own people in key positions.
Austin may have his own schemes, but he definitely did not have the guts to pull something like this off on his own. Someone must be secretly backing him, plotting everything behind the scenes.
And as for Kayden, that crafty old man, he would not make such a blatant move himself, so the mastermind was probably just a scapegoat.
Since the news of Kailyn and Austin's engagement was announced, many people in the Herrera Group have started looking at Austin with newfound respect. Austin had suddenly turned into a person everyone was eager to know.
Are these old men blind? What real capabilities does someone who married into his wife's family have? Austin's just using a woman to climb the ladder!
After all the drama, we finally made our way back to Nifelheim City that day.
"It's so good to finally have you back!" Bonnie's face lit up with a bright smile, her eyes sparkling with joy.
We walked into the room to find a table full of steaming, sumptuous dishes, the rich fragrance filling the air.
The moment Zachary entered, his eyes landed on Javier, who was seated on the sofa, completely absorbed in his video game. Zachary ran over, clutching Javier's legs tightly, his face lighting up with joy as he eagerly asked, "Javier, can I play too?"
Javier was also fond of Zachary, and the two of them had a lot of fun playing together.
Watching this heartwarming scene, my eyes began to well up with tears, and my thoughts inevitably drifted to Angela.
She had always loved lively occasions and was usually the most energetic one in the room.
But now, with her gone, everything was different, and all that was left were empty memories.
I took a deep breath and tried to suppress the bitterness in my heart.
After the meal, I went out to the balcony alone.
Bonnie walked over, her voice gentle as she asked, "Laurel, are you planning on keeping Zachary with you from now on?"
I could tell from Bonnie's hesitant expression that she had some concerns.
"I promised..."
Before I could finish, I saw a figure rushing toward me. Zachary grabbed my sleeve and said, his voice soft and innocent, "Laurel, it's cold outside. Let's go back inside."
I snapped back to reality and looked at his innocent face.
Bonnie glanced at Zachary's childish face and said, "Laurel, your mother always felt guilty about you and your brother."
I stopped and turned to look at Bonnie.
With a soft sigh, Bonnie looked at Zachary lovingly and gently patted his head. "She feels guilty for not being able to be the mother she wanted to be for Isaac and not giving you the care you deserved.
"You've suffered a lot while growing up. If she knew you and Isaac are doing well, it'd bring her comfort."
I looked up at Bonnie, her smile warm but her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Kailyn's eyes smoldered with contempt and mockery as she shot a sideways glance at Zachary. "What are you crying for? You want to go with her? Hmph, maybe you'll be dead before you even make it to Nifelheim City," she said viciously.
